La Maison & Velier Caroni Navy Rum 100th Anniversary „Replica“ HTR 2000
Most people land somewhere around "excellent entry Caroni," with a minority who feel the reputation carries it further than the glass does. Expect the classic auto-workshop signature — tar, rubber, leather — that opens into orange peel, dried fruit and a little menthol. Tropically aged and softer than the cask-strength siblings. The recurring gripe: the 51.4% feels a touch tame and the finish sometimes fades early.

A great Caroni that doesn't come across as dirty as other bottlings. Very intense on the nose, very expansive aroma. After about 15 minutes, the rubberiness fades and it becomes almost fruity and tropical. It is soft and round on the palate, very well integrated alcohol and extremely pleasantly strong, but smooth on the finish.

Magnificent! On the nose tar, barrel and lightly cherry and vanilla. In the mouth an explosion of perfectly balanced sensations. Still tar, barrel and followed by toastiness and chocolate with a mix of spices.Intense finish that lingers until the next day.In my small way, one of the best rums I have tasted. I assigned 94 because there are too many great rums that I have never tasted and may never taste.

The nose is very expressive, with crushed nuts, very ripe fruit and hints of petrol. Roasted spices. On the other hand, I find the alcohol hot and the whole lacks balance.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: For me, the remaining value-for-money smash at Caroni. Not the best Velier release, even clearly not, but given the fact that here is a completely tropically aged distillate from the legendary distillery in the glass and continues to be available for a much lower price than the current (continental aged!) Releases, the recommendation remains virtually without alternative.
Review by Mirco
Good Caroni with still good value for money. Considering the continental variants at significantly higher prices, a clear recommendation to buy. Typical Caroni notes in a tamed form, which are also suitable for Caroni beginners. Of course, it lacks the complexity of other Velier bottlings.
Review by DomM
Very pleasant and easy to drink Caroni. Well balanced and enjoyable while also carrying the typical notes you would expect. Only criticism should be the low-ish ABV, which could have made for a even better experience, if a bit higher imo. Nevertheless this is very good and can give a lot of more recent continental Caroni bottlings a run for their money.
Review by Joachim Guger
Beautiful Caroni nose. Rather dirty, lots of gasoline and gunpowder. Exotic fruits and lime balance with freshness. Of course a bit less intense than its full proof brethren.Crisp and warm in the mouth. No fruit at all, but caramel.Gasoline and spice in the finish.Great drinkable Caroni that has everything a Caroni should have. I like the gasoline notes the best.⛽️⛽️⛽️PLV these days (01/23) a doozy.

A Caroni that we still sometimes manage to find in stores and that has not (yet) taken the elevator. A fantastic nose, one immediately smells the scents of machine shop and immediately after tropical fruits and a kind of black cherry. The palate attacks hard on diesel and rubber, but without ever being disturbing. A depth and a width of flavors amazing. A great success, but on the rougher side than the Caroni 21 or the Tresspassers of 96.
Review by Gunnar Böhme "Bauerngaumen" 🤓
Well, what else can I say about this Caroni classic? The quality and taste are beyond question. Ok, it could have had a bit more oomph for my taste. But that's what the 21 is for. So: a worthy rum for the end of the year, absolutely appropriate for the occasion.
Review by Dr.Django
It's been years since my last sip of this rum. You should have stocked up on this earlier. Wonderfully typical dirty Caroni aromas with plenty of orange peel and citrus marmalade. Oily and pleasant on the palate. A longer finish would be desirable
Review by Oliver
Absolutely heavenly nose - dark, toasty and intense. Very well integrated alcohol on the palate. Creamy and intense. Makes really fun!
Review by Thunderbird
A very nice, easy-drinking Caroni entry-level rum! It has many facets of a real Caroni, but in a mild version Edit: Navy tasting... as previously noted, it is not clearly recognizable to me as a navyrum in terms of taste. But still a rum of very good quality. The rating remains the same
Review by Tschusikowsky
A lot of Caroni for still reasonably affordable money. Very much workshop. I like the finish best. In the mouth, in addition to the classic notes, a lot of menthol comes through, along with some acidity. The nose is also great.
Review by Martin Augustin
A great nose with typical Caroni notes of tar, rubber and leather. Enriched with cherry and mocha. These dirty notes can be found on the palate. However, perfectly balanced and not too heavy. There is also licorice, orange and pepper. Long and pleasant finish. Great rum.
Review by Djehey
Quite easy to drink and enjoy if you like tar aromas, but not necessarily my preference. I liked the hint of acidic aromas on the nose, reminiscent of fruit. The long finish and oily side are also very pleasant.
Review by Gregor
One of the best caroni I've ever had. Nicely smoky (more like beech smoke) and round. Not too strong after worn rubber tires like most. Beautifully complex. The alcohol is very nicely integrated.
Review by TheJackDrop
On the palate: the texture is pretty crazy, thick, really dirty, quite fruity. A little cola, a background of tobacco and this time ok, tar or something less natural! I had to breathe for a long time after the 3rd sip to smell it, but the aromas are there. Finish: small explosion of flavor at the back of the palate, nice spices, light menthol and black pepper. Lacks perhaps a hair's breadth of length, but hey, it's a small sample :) It's intense but relatively mild, I think, affordable enough for those to whom Caroni would scare more than envy! 8.7 because it's just excellent, but... I didn't have the time of my life either :)

31.12. 2019 Last tasting of 2019 went into 2020. Celebrating with family and friends who like rum we ended up having a great party according to my notes. Notes. Medium dark colour. Nose: light wood, roasted, dried fruit, spice, rubber, mint, complex. Palate: oily, fresh, wood, fruity, berries, light smoke, mint, spicy. Finish: long and warm, wood, light smoke, dried fruit. Samples of secret origin.

Edit: Now that I've had a few Caronis in the jar, I still think it's the best and cheapest still available. A classic that I simply have to adjust upwards a little! The tropical one beats many a continental one, which are more than overrated and extremely overpriced. For my Caroni horizon, which is still a little limited, a very fine piece. Compared to the Doris, it's a lot dirtier, but I still find it very balanced and round. The only negative point for me is that I don't think it lasts very long, otherwise it would probably have scored a 9 for me.
Review by Beach-and-Rum 🏖️🌴
Nice dirty notes. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Very mild. Update: Tasted again after a long time. I didn't really like it 2 years ago. Now the points are clearly going up. The Caroni has hardly any sweetness or fruity notes, but lots of wood and typical Caroni components. For me, it's not in the top league, but in my opinion it's still an affordable alternative.
Review by Joe95
A caroni with freshness notes (eucalyptus, menthol), slightly liquorice and camphor. The empyreumatic side is well present but does not take hold of the whole. The alcohol is very well integrated and the length is superb.
Review by Pavel Spacek
... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.
Review by SaibotZtar
After a long time in the glass again... I like it much better today than I did years ago. A good, drinkable Caroni with everything a Caroni needs... Dirt tar fruit wood leather Alcohol very well integrated.
Review by Felix Reiber
The Caroni Navy Rum knows how to impress with its aroma. The nose immediately reveals pleasant fruity notes, which lead to herbal spices, wood, tar and caramel. A great sweetness immediately emerges in the mouth. Tropical fruits, orange peel and herbs (mint, tea) as well as a woody spiciness can be heard. Olive and thyme are in the background and a pleasant caramel note resonates. The long finish is herbal, spicy and orange peel, wood and tea reappear. What was described as tar on the nose develops into incense and leather. Easy to drink and great spice with herbs set the tone here. Highly recommended.
Review by Manuel
First-class Caroni from Trinidad that has nothing to hide. The typical dirty Caroni notes are clearly noticeable on the nose and in the finish. A clear recommendation for anyone who wants to try a Caroni at a relatively affordable price.
Review by Leo Krüper
My very first Caroni, which I had in the glass at the time. And he had not tasted good to me. Now in the re-tasting a completely different picture. Solid "entry-level" Caroni, which cleverly brings over the dirtiness and tar flavors at a pleasant drinking strength. Nose is the strongest point of the rum, not so much happening at the back. Cheapest Velier Caroni, which you can find in the meantime.
Review by Tim
The nose contains too much smoke, dirt and leather for my taste. Caramel, vanilla and fruit sit in the background and need some time to be discovered. It is therefore advisable to let the rum breathe a little. Intense, dry mouthfeel with lots of smoky spiciness and earthy notes.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
A really really nice caroni and full of flavors! The thing I like most about this rum is that all the flavors alternate and I keep a great balance! A very underrated bottle in my opinion!
Review by Timo Groeger
And yet another Caroni. The third and last one for today. Thanks Oliver for this. Definitely has nice Caroni notes. Wood, spice, barrel, leather, some tropical fruit and licorice. Caroni simply top.
Review by F.L.O.
After 2 years, an update on the tasting, Now I find the Caroni really tasty. Not too dirty, but not boring either. Great entry-level Caroni in the cask strength class. I'd love more of it.
Review by Beancheese
I need to start by just saying that I really like this rum. It is a ‘Caroni-light’, and I think some people knock it for that - but seriously, a ‘Caroni-light’ is still a great thing. In fact, I think this will appeal to a lot of people more than a Caroni turned up to 11. This rum is way more light on the nose than you’d expect but still heavy on tar and rubber, with some sweetness, fruit, wood and soft spice. On the palate it reminds me of being a kid chewing my leather baseball glove straps in the infield (in the best kind of way). There is some fruit and sweetness on the palate and the rum is medium light in intensity but still high on complexity. This is incredibly drinkable without being ‘weak’. If you re-labeled this a rum without mention of Caroni I think it would climb a few points in rating, but as it is it will forever be destined to compete against its superstar big brothers. Sign me up for this gem any day though.

Just delicious. A great classic 😍
Review by TheRhumhoe
A very good Caroni that gently introduces the atypical profile of this late distillery at a reasonable price. The nose is very rich, with rubber and tar joining menthol and synthetic notes for a combination that is at once dirty, empyreumatic and intense. Oak, spices (vanilla is very present) and leather are confronted by a luscious fruitiness of red berries, tropical fruit and dried fruit. A complete and varied nose. On the palate, there's a fine balance between Caroni's dirty, almost synthetic character and a more pronounced woodiness on leather, tobacco (ash) and spices (licorice, pepper in particular). Fruit and menthol soften the profile, which is oily, dry but very tasty and affordable. There's a lovely smoky finish on tar, licorice, wood, leather, tobacco and spices. Menthol, vanilla, caramel and dried fruit add to the roundness. A reference rum for any neophyte wishing to discover more about the "dark" side of rum.
Review by Vincent D
Atypical nose of rubber and spices at first, then a little fruit and spices. I'm disappointed, expecting something that explodes with aromas. And yet, it doesn't speak to me much. On the palate, there's no slap in the face as expected. The Caroni tar is there. Licorice, a touch of menthol. Nothing crazy. Even in terms of length, I'm disappointed. It's a far cry from some rums whose taste lingers after you've brushed your teeth. I can't wait to taste it again, in the hope of finding it better. As it is, it's still very good, but I expected considerably more. Edit: much better than 1st tasting. Very soft on the nose, but much better on the palate without being excellent. The finish is very pleasant, with the dirty touch of Caroni behind a very pleasant greediness.
Review by Benoit Mahe
Un Caroni accessible et très réussi. Les marqueurs de la distillerie sont bien là. La finale entre le chocolat et le mentholé est très belle mais un poil courte.
Review by Mentalo
It simply has great, dirty Caronino notes and a lot of sweetness. Unfortunately, it's already borderline for me. Apart from that, I don't get enough fruity or spicy notes. Also a slightly watery mouthfeel. I've now had it in the glass again after a long time and have upgraded it a little.
Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
Haaa, the nose is coming together. It is greedy and fruity, I had forgotten that Caroni could be so greedy! Then we find a pleasant nose on the classics of the distillery: hydrocarbons, candied fruits and vegetal notes of eucalyptus. The aromas are dirty, but also "light". In mouth, it is creamy with slightly bitter gum notes. Then we find balance with notes of fruits, tar and a minty freshness on the finish. The finish is not the most sustained but offers us a nice peppery licorice. What to say about this bottling? I find it quite representative of the Caroni style and a nice entry point for those who want to start but I find it lacks here a little aromatic intensity.
Review by RumTaTa
I'm no expert in the field of caronis but this one strikes me as very balanced. The dirty notes are there and do not play hide 😉 Nevertheless, the rum is relatively "round" and offers much of what Caroni fans like.
Review by Filip Šikula
Another very pleasant caroni. Aromas of rubber, tar and later sheep. In the mouth a round oily taste, beautifully integrated alcohol, complex flavours full of technique and fruit. A superb navy rum. Longer, warming finish.
Review by Christoph
Unexpectedly mild in the nose, even less expected sweetness in the taste, partly fruity sweet, but then again dirty smoky and rather woody and bitter. In the finish then again totally different, as if you keep a delicious ciggare on the palate, but without the smoke. Great Navy Rum!The aftertaste is extremely long especially on the tongue. The tongue becomes furry and downright "stunned" but so that it is really fun.
Review by Boletus
Review by jems5
Nose of ship diesel, petrol, rubber, burnt tires, super original and distinctive, a real trip! A real discovery, light years away from classic linear ethereal rums, a slap in the face! Not elegance, but strength and character.
Review by Maxime Clr 🇫🇷
My first Caroni! 😍 A fine taste discovery, though difficult to grasp as it's so special with its tobacco, tar and solvent aromas. But not unpleasant!
Review by MarcT
I have had not many Caroni, so I cannot compare much. This one shows a bit of the usually attributed dirtyness, up to even a metallic mouthfeel. The Alcohol was very well integrated. It also really reminds me of the strong aromatic rum feel (that is not really rum) from some bakery products. Interestingly I needed to sample this, as the sample bottle seemed to leak a bit, and filled my sample box with a pugent nice rum aroma - so I decided there's no reason to let it get bad. It is good, but not overwhelmingly (to me at least), as I do not appreciate the more dirty elements.
Review by Rumpalumpa
Review by Jeremy Roger 🇫🇷
With this one, "Caroni" level is served !!! Gourdon and rubber well marked ! Strangely enough, I can't help but remember my baby's pacifier 🤔 Maybe that's why the Caroni appeals so much 😆
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Very tasty typical caroni representative. Mint, orange peel, dried fruit, tar and rubber tires, spicy, elegant and oily heavy. It's great fun! Definitely one of the good caroni representatives!
Review by Michael Ihmels 🇩🇪
Velier Caron: For me a very good rum. Not the best, but still phenomenal and highly recommended. In addition to the typical Caroni taste, a little cherry can be recognized.
