Tropical fruit up front — passion fruit, mango, berries — with only a light touch of the classic Caroni dirt: rubber, tar and smoke that most tasters found milder than expected. Dark chocolate, roasted nuts and a gentle jammy sweetness fill it out. Several people liked it but called it a touch flat: a fruity, easy-going Caroni rather than a tar-heavy one.

First impression: Unfortunately, I didn't really get around to analyzing this one in peace due to all the bottling of samples. But the first one is already very good. I think it will be corrected. Edit: Tasted again in peace after the bottle had quite a lot of air. Developed very well. But still made a small downward adjustment.

8,8:On the nose, first of all, it is dirty. Within the next context of roastedness, wood, comes chocolate, roasted nuts, caramel. Maracuja, berries as cranberries, turn in with some dried fruits and rubber, wax. When aired a bit, it gets darker with molasses, vegetal notes, burnt sugar, menthol, some bacon and the wood is toasted with some spiciness. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is very spicy with black pepper, dirty, fruity with tropical fruits as passion fruit, mango, then berries as cranberries, gooseberries, some currants and citrus. The wood is roasted, there are roasted nuts, chocolate, nougat. The medicinal notes are strongly present with rubber, petrol, plastic, wax, tar, there is some menthol, the rum is oily and briny for a second. Out of this, bitterness arises. Later, when aired, we notice mineral and musty notes and it turns to darker notes for our tasting buds with dark molasses with some resin, licorice, vegetal notes and espresso. I find the rum very tasty, ispite strong medicinal notes. 8,8:The finish is long, woody, dry, roasted with some chocolate, nuts, is resinous, dark. There is some menthol, tar, it is round and fruity with berries, kiwi, vegetal with tobacco, cigar tobacco..

Nice nose with some dirt, smoke and a lot of fruits. Very intense fruity notes on this barrel. On the palate: sweetness, cacoa, some dirt and again a nice touch of fruityness. Very good 98 cask imo.

For me, this is not a typical Caroni...but definitely a very good rum. Initially there are slightly dirty aromas alongside the fruity aromas, but these disappear almost completely with longer ageing. Initially sweet on the palate, then something floral (violets) and fruity, then a change to slightly spicy, the finish is unspectacular and relatively short. Compared to the Caronis I know, it clearly lacks the top quality

A Caroni with rather restrained HTR aromatics for the 1998 vintage, but with a strong fruit impact. Quite pleasantly balanced, elegant sweetness, for an even higher rating I would just like a little more aromatic depth — a little more deep spice notes, a touch more wood. This is criticism at a high level, but in direct comparison with other 1998 Caronis, those top representatives stand out with even more intensity.

Ein guter Vertreter der 1998er Caroni's. In der Nase hab ich dunkle Früchte, Kiwi etwas Leder dunkle Schokolade und dreckig muffige Notes , anfangs leicht Pfeffrig und stechend . Geschmacklich kommt die Fruchtigkeit nochmal besser duch dazu kommt etwas Minziges und Maracuja. Leder Pfeffer Cassis und später dunkle Schokolade. Entwickelt sich mit der Zeit Sehr schön und der Alkohol wirk besser eingebunden.

Intensely fruity affair. Great nose, heavy sweetness, compote-like fruit combo. In comparison, less workshop aromas than other bottlings. Good overall picture and very tasty. Blind, I don't think I would taste any difference here to a <20-year-old Caroni.

Rather a light representative of the more fruity side. Hardly any dirt, hardly any rubber. Easy to drink, almost a little boring. For me, a below-average Caroni with no recognition value. So I don't need a whole bottle. Thanks to zabo for the sample!

Mein zweiter Caroni, wahrscheinlich ein milder Einstieg in die Welt des Rums, der wunderbar nach brennenden Autoreifen schmecken soll 😄 Nicht so teerig und dreckig wie erwartet, angenehme Frucht aber trotzdem unrund und wunderbar eckig, ich mag Rum nicht so gefällig und schmeichelnd - daher genau meins. Gutes Mittelding, würde ich vermuten. Danke an Zabo fürs Sample! Btw: Geburtstagsgeschenk von mir an mich - hat sich gelohnt 🎊

Oh man, Caroni ist einigermaßen gut und lecker :) so den typischen Fahrradschlauch und Teer habe wirauch hier. Aber auch hier ei. Echt guter Rum, Caroni halt, aber muss ja auch probiert werfen das Teil.

Nicht so teerig und dreckig wie erwartet, angenehme Frucht aber trotzdem unrund und wunderbar eckig, ich mag Rum nicht so gefällig und schmeichelnd - daher genau meins. Gutes Mittelding, würde ich sagen. Ein bißchen mehr power und frucht würde ihm gut tuen.

Sehr fruchtiger Caroni und die Fruchtnote ist wirklich gut. Mit einer angenehmen Süße Richtung Fruchtkonfitüre. Im Abgang leicht dreckige Note. Ich mag die Abfüllung, aber ist insgesamt zu flach. Da sind andere 98er besser ausbalanciert.

Schön Fruchtig ohne zu viel schwere Süße, die mich bei den kontinentalen 98ern oft stört. Nicht zu holzig, lediglich etwas mehr dirty könnte er sein. Alles in Allem sehr gut.

Eher fruchtiger Vertreter der 98er Caroni, dennoch mit typischer Drecknote. Diese kommt an der Nase erst gegen Ende, am Gaumen ist sie früher präsent. Eher rauchig als gummiartig. Kein Highlight insgesamt, aber trotzdem ein nicht zu verachtender Caroni.

... Caroni je destilerie z Trinidadu, produkujici v dobe sve nejvetsi slavy rum, ktery se pridaval v pomeru 1:10 do namornickeho blendu. Byl totiz moc vyrazny a divny nez aby byl prijemny na jazyku. V roce 2000 destilerka skoncila s produkci a byla uzavrena. Az v roce 2010 se objevili degustatori, kteri si rum oblibili prave pro jeho specialni chut. A zajem rostl. Caroni patri do kategorie rumu "you need to try before you die". Doporucuji, Caroni je opravdu unikatni rum.

I recommend a few drops of water to tame it a bit. This also highlights the fruits and sweetness and reduces the rubber. Overall a nice drop but don’t expect something spectacular.
