Velier Casimir Clairin 2021
"The most impressive unaged rum I've ever sampled," one member wrote — and that captures the surprise here. This Haitian cane-juice clairin runs grassy and herbal with lemongrass, citrus and a natural sweetness, but Casimir's trick is the savory side: several tasters get smoked bacon, salt, even parmesan. Tamer than Sajous, less smoky than Le Rocher, it's oily and full-bodied yet almost well-mannered at 51.5%.

This is my fifth clairin and also my first Casimir. It's significantly less green and funky than Sajous, and way less smoky than Le Rocher. Haiti surprised me again. I was expecting it a tad more crazy. But this rum is almost smooth, with good manners. ☺️ On the nose I get lemongrass, citrus, grass and a little bit of sulfur. I don't smell in it any smokiness. After a short oxidation, the odour of sulfur disappears. On the taste, there's a natural sweetness, herbs, a little citrus fruits, and a tad of mint. It's significantly greener in a taste, then it smells. The aftertaste is short. About green pepper and mint. I compared Casimir against Sajous. I drank them neat and also in Ti' Punch. Sajous won in both cases.

29.01.2026 Retasting and I still find it pretty good especially when looking at the price tag. ---------- #4222 2023.08.24 Went to one of my rum pushers yesterday and was lucky for a small tasting. This one is very fresh and fruity. It has a nice citrus/lemon touch in the profile. Price to quality is very good in my mind. The empty glass has a touch of ginger and cane.

On the nose, I have lemongrass and an earthy note. In the mouth, I mainly have an herbal note, similar to essential oils used in massage creams or in SPAs. It's also slightly sweet. The final is on that same herbal note. It's nice. I prefer it to the Sajous but less than the Vaval.

Oh, this is quite a different flavor from the Clairin Sonson. Now, instead of the dominant earthy and floral notes, as another reviewer put it nicely, the smoked bacon and salty notes come to the fore more. But I can also place the sensation of a sort of floral soap and olive, citrus, mint, and grass. As you can see, a very unique flavor. You have to like it. I think it has a certain appeal. Definitely nice as a change of pace in your rum choices.

Wonderful masterclass with Daniele Biondi. It was great to try to whole range. The story of Clairin and Haiti 🇭🇹 is absolutely amazing. It is a privilege to be able to try such a pure product at home. Casimir adds spices and herbs to distillation. Only one Clairin like that in Haiti ;) Distinctive Parmesan smell and very herby taste 5-6 days fermentation Every batch seems to be totally different

On-line degustation of Clairin by Rum explorer 9.12.2024 expects grassiness and earthiness is replaced by smoky bacon with tons of salt... I've never had anything like it and I enjoy it, although it probably won't appeal to everyone

Schade.
