Vaval's clairins seem to be on a roll, and it's easy to see why with their unaged juices. On the nose, there's the smell of Bolognese sauce, with cooking tomatoes mixed with aromatic herbs, seasoned with spices and cooked long enough for a smokier aftertaste. There's also a medicinal edge, with phenolic notes on the polish. It's original but well mastered. The attack on the palate is even more intense, with a salty, mineral, even coppery side that adds even more character. Sugar cane becomes more present, as does fruit. The earthy, vegetal side is not disturbing, and goes quite well with Bolognese. The profile is rich, elegant and aromatic. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is of decent length, with the same zany associations from copper and polish to tomato, herbs, salt, spices and roasted notes. There's a little more sweetness from the slightly honeyed sugar cane. A very good clairin, which drinks well on its own but also makes a perfect base for cocktails.

#4810 10.08.2024 Enjoying some samples at home. Nose Round, tomato, apple, sugarcane, spice, light mint, light plum, light vegetal. Palate Oily, round, light vegetal, faint citrus, apple, light mint, faint floral, faint leather. Finish Medium long, fresh, oily, light apple, light vegetal, faint mint. The empty glass has light floral notes and some pineapple.

This Clairin is somehow different. The nose is predominantly planty and earthy. On the palate it is also very herbal, tomato is actually recognizable here. Sugar cane can also be tasted, but not as strongly as I'm used to from Clairins.

Clairin Vaval shows why these unaged rums are so popular: Tomato, herbs, smoke and something medicinal on the nose. Salty and mineral on the palate, fruity and elegant. Long, spicy-honey-sweet finish.

I started writing review reviews of all clarins from the core range, as well as the Ansyen versions that I could grab. This Vaval opens on the nose on intense vegetal notes, vegetables, tomatoes. As I get deeper into the glass, in turn I get lots of natural sweetness, I think of honey. I'm the mouth, I first get a lot of sugarcane juice, followed by vegetables and some spices. The final is on the sugarcane juice and tomatoes. I absolutely love this clarin, it's one of my favorite. The price quality ratio is very good. It's definitely not a rum to sleep on, and not everyone will love it.

A very vegetal, tomato-like nose, unmistakably typical of Haitian rums. On the palate, frank but not aggressive, with the same notes of tomato, vegetables, perhaps artichokes and olives, which are finally present in the mouth.

Clairin – one love 🫶 Fabulous rums, and this not exception! Nose: bright & rich ! Complex aroma of fruity salad: raspberry, mango, tomatoes, guava. Some vegetables, like green peppers, fresh grass, little bit of olives & herbals. Touch of brine & nint of polish. Really fantastic. Palate: fresh, little bit sweetness. Guava, tomato, yellow apple, herbals, flowers, earthy notes, cucumber, olives, fennel. Amazing. Aftertaste: long, fresh, grassy, tropical fruits juice & tomatoes. Conclusion: Amazing, like always. Highly recommend.

Wonderful masterclass with Daniele Biondi. It was great to try to whole range. The story of Clairin and Haiti 🇭🇹 is absolutely amazing. It is a privilege to be able to try such a pure product at home. They ferment in plastic “water” containers and made their own distilling still. Fritz is an owner/master distiller. Distinctively salty.
