La Maison Du Whisky Foursquare Rum Barbados (Flag Series) 2006

"Typical Foursquare profile" is how several tasters sum it up — coconut, milk chocolate, vanilla and caramel on the nose, rounder and lighter-fruited than most. At 60.3% the palate turns spicy and woody, and a few found it sharp, dry, even a touch artificial on the finish. Most enjoyed it; the recurring gripe is it's hard to tell apart from a standard Foursquare.

Very tasty as a CubaLibre, but unfortunately the price is a little too high. Edit: The Swell and the Barbados 2006 Flag Series have been added to the big crosstasting of the Velier bottlings. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to get a sample of the 70th. In general, it can be said that there were no major differences on the nose when flying blind. However, there are recognizable differences in the taste itself. In my opinion, however, three clearly stand out and are by far the worst of the bunch. First impression 8.7 Detailed tasting follows Edit: very great representative of Foursquare. I will soon be doing a crosstasting, blind of course, with the Velier bottlings. But I dare to predict that it will more than hold its own against these.

Of the 16 years of maturation, the master has spent 14 in tropical ex-bourbon casks...so very promising! The nose is full of coconut, butterscotch, cream pudding, oak barrel, slightly tart notes in the background (somewhere between hops and grapefruit). Allspice on the palate, toasted barrel, tannins, the high ABV comes across as a little sharp

Typical Foursquare profile. This is very round on the nose, lots of coconut, lots of milk chocolate, but little spice, little wood 😀 Very strong and spicy in the mouth. It then goes into a finish that I find really unpleasant, very artificial (plastic!!!) and difficult to describe. 🤔🤔🤔 Strong opening, but then... Thanks to Bonn for this interesting sample. 🤩

All in all, rather disappointing for me. The nose still promises a nice representative of the 2006 vintage with lots of baked orange, coconut and allspice. But the taste is rather sharp-edged and very dry, almost bitter, burnt and overripe. The otherwise more intense banana and coconut notes tend to fade into the background here. Too bad!

8,8:On the nose, toasted/roasted wood notes like caramel, toffee, pastry, burnt sugar, chocolate, hazelnuts, spicy with allspice, nutmeg, coconut, dried apricots, raisins, orange and glue, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, molasses is candied, thick, earthy, vegetal, leather is stronger, crème brûlée, biscuits, vanilla join, metallic patina, fruits are syrupy. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is fruity with dried fruits like apricots, raisins, coconut, citrus fruits, joined by pineapple, cherry and berries, marmalade like, slightly creamy with dairy, medicinal with glue, molasses is earthy with cigar tobacco, floral and the wood toasted with chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, toffee, pastry, spicy, warm with nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, a bit salty, smoky, tannic and dry. 8,7:The finish is long, dry&tannic, round and creamy with dairy, toasted oaky notes, spicy, smoky, slightly burnt, fruity with dried, citrus fruits, coconut, pineapple, as molasses is vegetal, earthy..

Velier FS (+ a fee spected other contenders) blind cross tasting: Honestly, the results here were very close. The Belier bottlings display a very high quality thourgout the range. Triptych and Pleni came out on top for me closely followed by Destino. I was somewhat surprised, that Sassafras and 2006 came out rather at the bottom, while I enjoyed both very much on their own. Raconteur also quite low in the ranking with Principia clearly at the bottom.
