A slow neat sipper that needs air — pour it and let it sit ten minutes. Once open, expect lots of oak, dark chocolate, dried fruit and plum, with an herbal, almost menthol streak and real bitterness. One taster nailed the funky side as "Warhammer paint, glue and fruit." Sixteen tropical years on a pot-still Barbados that many call the best Mount Gay they've had.

Very nice on the nose. This feels very mature (in a positive way) with lots of wood, chocolate and hints of coconuts. Those notes are accompanied by lots of ripe and dried fruits and some herbs (a hint of menthol?). The fruit notes are rather intense making this the best MG nose I experienced so far. Lots of wood on the palate without being to dry or bitter. Dark choclate and some dried fruits show up to the party. Nice. This one needs quite some time to breath to fully open up but delivers a very nice MG expression.

A Mount Gay that is probably quite close to the perfect aging duration. In this case, the profile clearly benefits from the longer cask maturation: the rum presents itself on the one hand as typically intense and spicy, with a pleasant, heavy caramel sweetness and vegetal tobacco and eucalyptus aromas as well as dark berry notes – blackcurrant, with a hint of plum too – all well balanced. Besides the Port Cask, the best representative of the distillery I know.

A rum tasted at the WLP. The nose is light, with pastries, tart candy and a distinct vegetal (angelica) note. The palate is marked by bitterness, astringent young wood and plum liqueur. The finish is long on bitter wood and tropical fruit. A very fine, rather bitter rum.

A very good Mount Gay that needs some time in the glass. But then it unfolds a pleasant potential. On the nose, I perceive a mixture of herbal aromas and tart fruits. There is also a hint of wood. On the palate, it is pleasantly soft and light. Spice, wood and vegetal notes dominate here. This continues on the palate at the beginning until tart/sweet dried fruit appears later! I like this Last Ward very much

To round off the Whitsun weekend, a little mount gay last ward comparison. Both are very similar, but the nuances are different. In the back of my mind, both remind me a little of T.D.L's. For me it's a neck and neck race, although I would prefer the RX190 due to the better P/L ratio.

05.04.2024 Mount Gay Extreme Rare online tasting mit Dirk. Retasting this one and it is still a very good rum once rested for a good while. Resting it will release a lot of extra flavours. Nose Fresh, intense, wood, light roasted, plum, herbal, light grass, dried fruit. Palate Intense, wood, light smoke, dried fruit, earthy, herbs, naturally sweet, light floral. Finish Medium to long, wood, dried fruit, floral, faint coffee. Great tasting at home with whisky. Here is a rum I've wanted to try for a while. A profile that definitely leans on the richness of its wood. Some will say it's a woody juice but I find it candied and delicious. It reminds me a bit of the Bally 2004.

Really great, unusual Mount gay. Bitter, fresh herbal and sweet fruity aromas come together here. Bitter orange, lime peel, Persian dried black lemons, eucalyptus, roasted coconut shavings, dark chocolate, Virginia tobacco and plums. Very exciting and unusual!

In aroma it strikes me after half an hour in the glass as a classic fine barbados. Sweets and caramel on the nose. After sipping, the sweetness immediately appears, overpowered by a grassy - almost agricola-like aftertaste, which then gives way to a mild but pleasant bitterness. I like this rum more and more

Tasted it at the Rare Tasting with Dirk at RumDepot. and I have to say that for me it is on a par with the Mount Gilboa from Velier. This rum also benefits from being left in the glass for a few minutes. Sweet, tobacco, wood, fruit, eucalyptus, already very complex and intense. I wouldn't have placed the flavor profile in Barbados.

Rispetto all habitation velier che ha meno anni in questo rum ritrovo molto più presente e invadente il legno che copre un po’ tutti i bei sapori fruttati e di mandorla che ritrovavo nell habitation! Di sicuro merita un altro assaggio magari lasciandolo riposare e facendolo aprire di più!

Really interesting rum. Takes a little longer to breathe, then pleasant fruity and herbal notes open up the aroma followed by the Mount Gay aroma coming to the fore. The taste builds on the nose, but with a surprising (and pleasant) bitterness. Definitely something for advanced smokers, but then a great experience

The best bottling of Mount Gay that I've had in my glass so far. I think the bottling benefits from the longer storage compared to the bottlings of the Last Ward Habitation series. The alcohol is better integrated, but there is also significantly more wood. For me, however, this still works in combination with fruity notes and menthol.

Mon premier Mont Gay, après une trentaine de FS. Du coup j’avais une idée préconçues de ce que j’allais déguster. Au final strictement rien à voir. Et c’est une belle découverte. Plein de bon d’arôme, ça explose bien en bouche. Longueur moyenne à longue. Alcool présent mais pas dérangeant. J’ai bcp aimé

Cross testing this one with the last ward 2007 from Habitation Velier. I'm always surprised by the last ward bottlings, they offer souch more than the regular Mount Gay range. When asking a brand ambassador from the brand, I was told that nothing changed in the craft methods since the last ward era, meaning that Mount Gay is still capable of producing this type of rum, and probably has barrels with that profile. This Velier has a better balance and alcohol integration than the younger ones from Habitation Velier. I rate it above the HV 2007.

Probably one of the most interesting bottles to come out of WL 2023. The alcohol is quite present, but after a few minutes of opening, the rum has a lot to say. The profile is quite complex, ranging from gourmand cocoa and pecan (in addition to the classic Barbadian vanilla-coconut), very light esters of varnish and, above all, pretty red fruit notes of blackcurrant with a hint of mint, and even raspberry at times. To the untrained eye, you'd think it was a tdl (perhaps a Fernandes in style). On the palate, the alcohol is quite present, but the integration is good without being exceptional. Immediately sweet pear juice in the nose. would almost not mean that there is alcohol in the nose. In the taste in the direction of Calvados. Not too sharp, pleasant aftertaste. Really a delicious rum. Long finish. Recommendable.

Here we go - this is the first MG that I really like, I am not kidding. Super flowery and varnish nose, no alcohol at all. Nice full creamy body. It has quite bitter and dry finish, but nothing aggressive. I am surprise how smooth and mild this is. I am considering to buy a bottle despite the crazy price.

Powerful herbal nose with some menthol, damp wood and cardboard. Behind the alcohol on there is lots of wood, some fresh cut some old, also some solvent. On the palate it has the character of an intensely aged rum. Some tannin and wood astringency and lots of spices, maybe in a more old Demerara direction, or reminds me more of an Appleton Hearts. Oily mouthfeel. Finish is long and drying.
