Habitation Velier Hampden OWH 2016
A gentler Hampden that most owners are glad they tried, even if few call it the star of the OWH lineup. The nose is the highlight — ripe banana, pineapple, marzipan and a whiff of varnish, with that medicinal Hampden marker still lurking. At 60% the alcohol sits well integrated, the body turns oily, and there's a tangy, almost sour citrus edge that some love and a few find too much. Tropical maturation gives it real oak.

#4813 16.08.2024 Having a relaxing afternoon and evening with Joël from Switzerland. Nose Fresh, fruity, pineapple, light floral, faint honey, light wood. Palate Warm, fresh, light wood, fruity, overripe, light pineapple, lightly sweet, light ester, faint chocolate. Finish Long and warm, light wood, faint roasted, fruity, light banana, faint chocolate. The empty glass has a nice herbal touch as well as light mint.

The last in the series of HV Hampden-Marks and I have to say, not my favorite by far. I find the nose rather unpleasant. Sorrel/kumquat mix with wood, in between some marzipan, ester/phenol mix. However, this dull sour note predominates. On the palate, it is initially creamy and oily with a subtle sweetish note. Then a kind of medicinal aroma develops, paired with olive, allspice and tart vegetal notes. There is also a slight hint of young wood. The finish is medicinal and spicy. Too bad, I had hoped for a conclusion to the series.

mmh… i‘m a bit disapponited… This one takes the last place of the Hampden Velier series, for sure. Not for the low ester content, it just not knock my socks off. Also the price per value rating is horrible..

For me, the nose is a bit more Clarendon than Hampden. Relaxed sipper, but sportily priced. Not the glorious end to a fantastic series.

Very good and actually almost exactly what I expected and hoped for. Medicinal with vanilla, a little marzipan, lots of semi-ripe banana and a few tropical fruits with varnish and phenol. Very great low ester Jamaican that scores with its tropical maturation

Oh wow, it's also simply great. On the nose, it has tropical fruit and a hint of citrus. The palate also has tropical fruit, and I find it beautifully spicy. Alcohol perfectly integrated. Strong rum. And thanks to SaibotZtar for the sample :)

In comparison today, the Velier OWH 2018 RX17319 and the OWH from Rum Runner RX15797. In terms of smell, the Velier is ahead for me. Much more intense than the Rum Runner. In terms of taste, the Velier is also ahead for me. In conclusion, both are good, but there are better ones.

In the glass something that is a very streamlined version of what we’re used to from Hampden. Perhaps good to (for once) enjoy an HD not in need of constant attention and -dare I say?- overanalysation. On the nose lavish aromas of oak, ripe banana, marzipan, vanilla cappuccino, and sugared ‘borrelnootjes’. It’s not boring whatsoever though. The classic Hampden complexity is ever-lurking with notes of herbal black tea, phenol, and clingwrap. The palate is equally accessible: elegantly fruity, slightly tangy, and with lots and lots of roasted nuts. It’s marginally more spicy and herbal than on the nose, but the plastic note remains an interesting constant. The finish is sweet and malty, with bananes flambées, vanillasugar, nougat, and with the interesting introduction of a touch of varnish. Christelle Harris proclaims that her favourite marks are the lower ester ones, in contradiction to European trends. I’ll atleast agree that the low end of the spectrum is underrespected. The quality of this OWH is impeccable, the pricing however questionable.

This Hampden, one of the lightest in esters, surprises with its relatively broad aromatic spectrum. The nose surprisingly shows quite a lot of phenolic, fermented aromas and moves towards camphor, even though it's a light OWH mark. Best of all, tropical fruit, citrus and a hint of marzipan make for a complete, aromatic and friendly rum, with sustained spice throughout. On the palate, the Jamaican funk operates with finesse and care. Pineapple, banana and lime dance with spices, vanilla wood and hints of pastry. The texture is oily, greasy and generous, but remains fairly smooth and balanced. The alcohol is fairly well integrated. The finish is of decent length, halfway between medicinal scents on varnish, tannins, tropical fruit and citrus, warm spices and pastry. There aren't really any flavors that predominate on the finish. This young Hampden light ester comes off better than it let on, with a good dose of funk, a fairly broad aromatic spectrum and good accessibility.

The conclusion of the series. It's not a bad rum, although for me it's the weakest of the series. Marzipan, somewhat medicinal, mild fruity notes and some wood. Unfortunately, it also has a relatively high acidity.

Nose: light & delicate. Tropical fruits, pineapple, bananas, mango, oranges. Some pecans, esters & intense varnish. Taste: warm, alcoholic. Little sweet, spicy, yellow fruits, dry apricots, marmalade, pineapple, banana. Little bit of esters, glue, polish. Aftertaste: medium. Little bitter, some roots, esters, medicine & spicy. Good entry level Hampden.

An excellent Hampden. Of Hampden's latest releases in the Habitation Velier series, this is definitely the one I liked best. It is a balanced but strong rum despite the fact that the level of esters is not very high. If you like Hampden green (owh), you can't help but like this one!

I've been waiting a long time for an OWH bottling of Habitation Velier, as tropically aged low esters are now my clear favorites. But now that it's here, I'm honestly very disappointed. Blindly, I would have guessed LROK. The rum has a really strong citrus note, with an extreme amount of acidity/vinegar. This is followed by a rather unripe ananna. Then comes the cask, but this is very inharmonious and dry, does not really combine well with the citrusy fruit and both seem as if one does not really belong to the other. There is still some marzipan, vanilla and caramel in the background, but it is really rather subtle. In the mouth, I actually like it a little better and it also seems really drinkable in places, with a nice sweetness. However, this doesn't change the rather unharmonious overall impression. If you compare it with the Bird from Egon and Stefan, the two are really worlds apart. Of course this was a very good cask, but I would have hoped for something similar with 2-3 points below it Personally, I don't really understand why these barrels were chosen or why the rum had to be bottled in this form. It's neither a particularly good Hampden, nor is it a logical continuation of the HV series at this age of maturation, because it hasn't necessarily succeeded in clarifying the distinction between the respective marks in the aged range Only 80 meager points for HV Hampden, what a shame!

A surprising hampden, the nose is quite pronounced but less funky and rounder on the palate. Fairly light color, quite bewitching on the nose. A little funk, ripe fruit (banana, pineapple) and a pastry aspect. Reminds me of freshly baked banana bread. Lively, almost fresh attack. Quite surprising on the palate for a hampden, less hydrocarbons, not too much funk. A little smoke and wood on the finish. A little short.

Sa robe se pare de jolis reflets dorés. Le nez est délicat et l'alcool est bien intégré car il n'irrite pas les naseaux. Les esters sont assez raisonnables bien que présents. Le mark OWH présente un taux d'ester entre 40 et 80g par hectolitre qui est le plus bas de la distillerie. Le côté solvant est très discret au profit de la banane très mûre très présente. Un léger boisé mêlé à de la vanille se fait sentir. C'est harmonieux et plus calme que les Jamaïcains plus fougueux que j'ai pu goûter jusqu'ici. Normal car je suis plus habitué à des esters plus élevés. Un deuxième nez fait ressortir des plantes médicinales, du camphre, un peu de menthol, mêlé à de l'ananas acidulé. On ne s'en lasse pas d'y plonger les narines. L'attaque est vive avec ses 60° mais le tout est bien intégré. On se surprend à sentir des épices plus fortes, le piquant d'un piment de cayenne, du poivre qui est pourtant plus l'apanage des rhums martiniquais. La canne est toujours présente malgré son vieillissement. Il y a aussi de la coriandre en poudre. Le milieu de bouche est sur du bonbon anglais style toffee et un peu de miel qui apaise le palais et la langue. Un fond imposant de réglisse liquoreuse, un goût de Zan de mon enfance, tapisse aussi la bouche sur une autre gorgée, accompagnée par une fraîcheur mentholée cohérente avec le nez. C'est frais et vivifiant. La finale est longue, épaisse et se poursuit sur cette réglisse mentholée. La gorge est comme engourdie par une sensation de froid. Un chêne verni vient donner de sa noblesse à ce rhum. On sent le côté funky du début à la fin sur ce Jamaïcain.

The scent is Jamaican nose balm. This is a joy to smell, it's almost not even necessary to drink. The flavour is so subdued, it doesn't develop much. It's been a long time since I finished it, but I find it similar to the Hampden 8yo. A milder Hampden, but still very nice.

Round 2 – Dans le coin gauche, Hampden : Habitation Velier OWH 2016 – 60% Distillé en 2016 sous le mark OWH (40–80 g/hlap d’esters), ce Hampden a vieilli 7 ans sous le climat jamaïcain avant d’être embouteillé en 2023 par Velier à 60%. Le OWH fait partie des marks les plus récents, créés après la reprise de la distillerie en 2009. Classé parmi les low esters, son profil reste typiquement Hampden : notes médicinales, vanille, massepain, banane, fruits tropicaux et un soupçon de vernis. Plutôt réussi pour un low ester !

Au nez beaucoup de noix rôtie, de fruits tropicaux murs, ananas en tête, un soupçon de vinaigre. La bouche est tres orientée sur l ananas juste mûr et sucrés, , quelques noix grillées. Le tout assez frais et souple. Finale moyenne sur les fruits, les noix et le bois legerement astringeant. Un joli produit.
