Malecon 13 Years - Rare Proof 2003
Burnt sugar, toffee and candied fruit up front, with a smoky wood note running underneath — classic sweet Panama, but the 50.5% keeps it from turning cloying. Most tasters find it round and sippable despite the proof, though several note it thins out toward the end and stays fairly simple: sweet, smoky, a little fruit. Fans of the Rare Proof line keep coming back for the balance and the value.

How does Malecon 13 Years - Rare Proof 2003 taste?
Aggregated from 43 community reviews.
Sweet, smoky Panama sipper with real balance Most owners rate it a well-balanced, sweet Panama sipper that punches above its price — the caveat being it's more easy-going than complex, and the finish fades fast.

I’m not a big fan of the Spanish styled Ron, but I like the Rare Proof series from Malecon. I believe it depends on the rich taste and that the sweetness is very good balanced with the quite high ABV. This one isn’t the best of them, but certainly a very good one anyway.

With this rum you get bang for your buck. Lots of flavour in a well balanced rum at a nice ABV. Fruity and sweet as it always is with Malecon and also the wood and spices. I'm not sure, but I think I sensed a hint of leather in there as well Price to quality is very good.

Krass guter Rum für diesen Preis! Schöne Trockenfrüchte, viel Frische, gut eingebundene Süße und angenehmer Abgang. Gerne wieder!

8,2:On the nose, the opening impression is with smoky, charred wood, notes like burnt sugar, molasses, tar and a banana. On aeration, dried fruits and citrus arise, honey from molasses and spices, toffee, some praline from wood. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is sweet with charred, quite spicy wood and fruity. Our tasting buds are attacked with caramel, caramelized burnt sugar, toffee, chocolate with nuts.We have variety of fruits like orange peel, dried apricots, banana, raisins and some orange that rounds the rum later on. 8,1:The finish is quite long with charred, slightly smoky and spicy, dry wood, molasses and tobacco, dried and tropical fruits, citrus, some confectionery and medicinal notes...

Despite its strength its quite sippable. Sugar before and after tasting.

This rum from Panama is very similar to the sweet rums from the Dominican Republic. Very fruity and caramel nose, with an inevitable smoky note. In the mouth sweet, mild and round, the 50% is not noticeable. However, the mouthfeel is not really complex: sweet, smoky and some fruit. Overall impression nevertheless quite good, especially the price-quality ratio.

One of my favourite rums. Well balanced, a bit sweet but the higher abv balances it very well. All of the Rare Proof rums are very good. Quite cheap for such good stuff.
