Caroni S.B.S Trinidad „The Beast“ 1993
People are genuinely split on this one, and the name is a fair warning. The nose pulls everyone in — burnt rubber, tar, menthol, leather, a little red fruit. Then the palate divides the room: some get bitter black tea, herbs and cigar they love, while many hit a soapy, "rosewater/violet" note and heavy oak they can't get past. A 26-year Caroni that swings between fascinating and undrinkable.

Very interesting unique rum! He has a dominant smell of Rubber/Tar with some notes of liquorice and mint. Very cool intense mouthfeeling of Rubber/Tar and a lot more. It has a very long finish, a mouthfeel like a truck full of tar and mint unloaded in your mouth 🤪PN: you’ll love it, If you like those tastes, otherwise you‘ll hate it! Update: My favorite „Caroni“! 😎 intense, most intense, THE BEAST

On the nose, rubber, red fruit, menthol, leather, shoe polish and even some caramel. On the palate, a strange, penetrating, soapy rosewater note overpowers everything else. A bit of a shame, because I otherwise really appreciate the charred-meaty notes like the Velier Guyana Stock.

Tbh I do not know what to look for when tasting a rhum. I do not feel/taste all the flavours and I cannot identify those which I do. But I do know this was one of the best ones I tasted so far. And what got me into it was it's unique taste that resembled smooky whisky, and not that you'd usually expect from a rhum. Anyways, bought 2 bottles, so I guess it is time to open the second one and enjoy what may be the last of it in this world 🙌

The Beast is already very bitter. But there is also menthol, mint, a very delicate fruity note and a violet/soap note. The soapy finish is particularly disturbing. It simply lacks balance, but it's still an interesting bottling.

Only in the finish discreet citrus, otherwise completely on the bitter-spicy side with lots of rubber. Almost like liquid grilled cheese. Especially in the mouth black tea and pleasant herbs. Some menthol as in toothpaste, but the kind you want to eat. Especially in the finish still some cigar. A very interesting Caroni that will only taste people who like it rather bitter.

There is a reason why they called this rum The Beast. A true Caroni all the way from the nose to the dry finish. A single cask that yielded only 239 bottles and the barrel leaves a nice imprint on this rum from the colour, which is almost black, to the palate and finish. A high priced rum but we'll worth it.

Intense Caroni/gasoline notes on the nose accompanied by mint and some red fruits. Dirty, smokey, bitter and intense all the way. An exceptional rum which fully lives up to its name. Not recommended as a daily sipper - a beast indeed ;)

Actually without rating ... Where I like the nose actually still quite good, but then: for me almost undrinkable! Perhaps comparable with extremely bitter, herbaceous toothpaste with lots of mint / menthol, an experience of a special kind😄.

Far too bitter and soapy

Very special, the nose is still comparatively restrained after some time, but then the rubber and bitter notes hit the tongue properly. Those who like Caroni should try it - but for most it will probably be no more than an interesting excursion.

Intensiv und bissig. Pur höchstens interessant aber eigentlich nicht genießbar. Könnte ich mir als Zutat für blends aber gut vorstellen. Die intensive Minznote macht Spaß.

It tastes like detergent. Edit- I do not believe, the taste is such a terrible. So I bought another sample. OMFG - it is even worse than my first feeling!

This is not Caroni as we know it! After spending a quarter of a century in the barrel, it has a very sour taste and sharpness to it. The wood dominates in this case and some of the typical oily, tar like ‘dirty’ notes are lost behind the taste of polished wood along with citrus, mint and burnt sugar.
Review by Oliver
Too bitter and too much mint. Failed experiment with sugar couleur.
Review by Lukas Jäger
Puuuh, the name says it all. The Beast delivers an incredibly exciting nose, very complex and also clearly Caroni. Burnt rubber, tar and also already neat wood and tannins. As much desire the nose makes, so brute comes the palate therefore. Again, definite Caroni notes that deliver a great taste experience in the short term, but are slain by Grandma's oak cabinet after a short time. So much wood and tannins that it's too extreme for me personally. If you keep it in your mouth too long, it becomes increasingly bitter and dry, like mocha or pure cocoa powder. This is too much for me...

Oha! This one is actually undrinkable. The known extremely bitter profile is joined by quite nasty soap notes.
