Saint James Cuvée L'Essentiel
Sipped neat, this Martinique agricole leans dark and dry: dried fruit (prune, cherry), oak, chocolate and warm spice like cinnamon and pepper. A blend of three 12-year ex-bourbon vintages, it's rounded and easy for its age. Several tasters wish it had a few more degrees — at 43% the palate reads a touch thin and classic rather than surprising.

This is an exceptional Rhum from Saint James. It’s a blend of the vintages of 1998, 2000 and 2003 all of them aged for over 12 years in small bourbon casks. I can really recommend it, even though the average price is a little high at around €180.

In the same context as the Cuvée Quintessence, this Cuvée L'Essentiel can be perplexing when you first look at the bottle. The nose is lively, fruity (prune, cherry, fruit brandy), quite woody and chocolatey. Aromas of spice, toast and sugarcane melt well with the juice. A dry, round and pleasant nose. The attack on the palate is controlled. Spices (cinnamon, pepper, vanilla) and wood take over, followed by dried fruit (prune), nuts, chocolate and sugarcane. The whole is round and easy-drinking, but would have been more interesting with a few more degrees. The finish is very dark and dry, with wood, dried fruit, roasted nuts, spices, leather and tannins. A good Saint James on paper, but so classic that it won't surprise anyone. The pretty decanter syndrome strikes again, as the juice is not worth the price paid, despite its undeniable qualities.

Significantly woodier and drier than expected. Delicious but overall a little too bitter for my taste. However, it develops over time into a delicious, heavy, easy sipper, perfect for a cold winter evening.

I also sampled this rum at the Rum Regatta in Flensburg and a bottle ended up in my shopping bag. I really like the rums from Saint James, so I wasn't surprised by the quality of this one. The nose is fruity and woody with spices, chocolate and light coffee. The palate is well balanced and complex with wood, lots of fruits, spices and chocolate. I can't decide if its warm or peppery. The finish is medium long with roasted wood, spices and dried fruit. Try to leave the empty glass for a few hours and then whif it. F

Tasted at Rhum Fest Paris, notes to be completed. I admit I hesitated to try it, as there was little chance that this product would appeal to me. It's a big juice, fruit brandy, big wood, and a little spice & chocolate, with cane in the background. Meh.

A fantastically round rum. Fresh fruit on the nose with some citrus, subtle vanilla and raisin. The taste is surprisingly fruity for its age, a little rosy, some oak and wood. The visual presentation rounds off the experience. Typical Saint James of very high quality!

Très au-dessus de la gamme standard goûtée à la même occasion. Mériterait une dégustation dans de meilleures conditions.

Very good but lacks a little pep.

excellent nosing and tasting. a beautiful mix of dried fruits and wood. still, it's a bit overpriced compared to the St. James 15 which is half the price and also very good.
Review by RumTaTa
Typical Agricole Rum, more on the woody side on the palate and finish.

Very nutty agricole with balanced wood notes. An interesting blend of 3x 12YO ex-Bourbon Vintages.

Good, but a bit thin for my taste.

08/03/2026: Brussels Rhum Festival @ Tour & Taxis. I enjoyed this blend very much. Very tasty, but a higher ABV might kick it up a notch. One thing is for certain, I like stuff from Saint James and I should explore more of them in the future!

Review by FireChief
En helt ekstraordinær cuvée. Perfekt fadlagring og en særdeles velintegreret alkohol. Markant vaniljestang. Denne cuvée kan tjene som benchmark for typen. Såvel duft som smag er på en gang sart, rund og kraftfuld. Et sandt mesterværk.
