J. Bally Millésime 1970

Nearly everyone here lands in the same warm place: this is old-school Martinique agricole "from a different era," elegant and balanced rather than loud. Expect dried flowers, thyme-honey, fine oak, a little chocolate and caramel, with pineapple and banana underneath. A few note it runs a touch hot on the finish, and one felt it lacked surprises — but the finesse for only 45% wins people over.

Bally's of older vintages always intrigue me! They make you realize that terrior, quality of sugarcane and mastery of distillation were enough to have great di! This one turns out intense and fruity despite the low alcohol content!

I killed this bottle last year and I'm inclined to buy a new one though the price has gone past 1000 euro. Lightly fruity with a warm and spiced palate. There is a bit of caramel and chocolate in there as well and if you leave the glass for the following day it's very clear.

Lots of dried and a few fermented fruits on the nose, complemented by classic Agricole nougat notes on the palate. Alcohol perfectly integrated, aromatically dense with the fine melt of well-aged rhums - outstanding!

A J. Bally that does honor to these old rums of yesteryear as they are no longer made. The nose isn't too pronouncedly agricultural: it's more on the honeyed side of the cane, with a fine woodiness, noble spices galore (nutmeg, cardamom) as well as chocolate and leather. There are a few berries to remind us of the fruity side, and a floral fragrance that adds a little freshness. A balanced, pleasant olfactory profile. The attack on the palate is very suave, with caramel, brown sugar and the honeyed aspect of the cane adding to the greediness. The woodiness is still very fine, accompanied by spices and tobacco that darken the profile. There's a slight earthy, vegetal bent, but it remains minor on the palate. The profile is old but elegant, complex and balanced. The finish is lovely, dominated throughout by spices, honeyed, candied fruit, raisins, wood, floral and herbaceous notes. The finish is drier, but retains its roundness and complexity. A superb, multi-faceted J. Bally that shows the breadth of the French West Indies terroir.

Very tasty with a surprising amount of power for the low ABV. I actually like it with a bit more oomph, but this was delicious. Tasted again and still very tasty ... nice nougat note and some soursop.

A very, very elegant Bally. Dryed flower petals thyme-honey. And a nice malty finish. This is really from a different era and is gone in a sense of not being produced anymore. But this is subtle and lovely
