Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Exquisite 94 Caroni. Classic profile with decent dirt, but balanced sweetness, wood, spice, coffee, licorice and mineral notes. The Hangar series is definitely top notch Caroni.

15.11.2025 Enjoying a few old samples while I am cleaning up my rum cabinets. Breaking a sweat over this actually. ------------- This one is like a hammer if you don't let it rest. I found it to be best after 45 minuts of rest after which the ABV stops biting into the flavours. The nose is alcoholic of not rested, light wood with rubber, tar, apple, licorice and light floral notes. The palate is also alcoholic if not rested with wood, rubber, tar trailed by vanilla, leather, licorice and light caramel and earthy notes. The finish is long is woody with spice, caramel and light leather. As I mentioned, this rum really needs to rest in order to release all flavours and settle on the ABV.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Stands out clearly even after the whole Paradise series. Wonderful bottling and a great representative of the 1994 series. Hangar series is overall very exquisite. Typical Caroni...dirty notes. Nevertheless balanced and complex.

A complex, warm nose with apple juice, pineapple and other tropical fruits, tar. It starts out soft, then the aromas invade the palate with fruit and machine shop. The finish is not the longest. A very fine Caroni, complex and deep, even if in direct comparison, the 92 seems to me to be well above the 94.

In der Nase macht der höhere Alkoholgehalt sofort auf sich aufmerksam. Viel Fasseinfluss, etwas nasser Korken, dazu Holzpolitur, Plastik, Kräuter und Rauch. Am Gaumen zeigt sich dann das volle Caroni-Paket: viel Gummi, Leim, Politur, Plastik und Teer. Kraftvoll, wild und ausgesprochen werkstattmässig. Trotz der knapp 63 % ist der Alkohol gut eingebunden. Dazu kommen eine leichte Säure sowie kühle Noten von Eukalyptus und Minze. Pfeifentabak und eine angenehme Trockenheit verleihen zusätzliche Tiefe, ohne zu dominant zu werden. Im Abgang bleibt das rauchige, kraftvolle Profil erhalten. Erst zum Schluss treten etwas mehr tropische Früchte hervor. Für Liebhaber dieses kompromisslosen Caroni-Profils ist das sicher eine herausragende Abfüllung. Persönlich spricht mich jedoch das ausgewogenere Profil der reduzierten 55%-Variante mehr an.

Jau, ein mega geiler Caroni. Die ersten Noten sind wie gewohnt Teer, Gummi und Menrhol, dann kommen hinterher noch Leder, Vanille, Toffee und Karamell hinzu. Ein Caroni, besser geht es echt kaum. Very lecker.

Wow, very cool. After standing for a while, you are greeted by a fruity nose with apple, berries, caramel, liquorice, menthol and, of course, tar, wood and some rubber. Less fruit on the palate, but more caramel with wood, licorice, vanilla, tar, rubber and earthy notes and a few dry figs. Tastes good to me, but I found the HP almost better. I'll have to compare it again directly.

94er Caroni der Spitzenklasse - man schmeckt so viel "Dreck", dass man fast vergeblich nach anderen Geschmacksnoten sucht. Sowohl Süße als auch Früchte sind nur dezent vorhanden und mit fortschreitendem Abgang wird es immer trockener.

Very good 1994 with great Caroni DNA. A tad too biting for a top rating. Its reduced little brother (Hangar 1994 18yo 55%) brings out the full potential.

The workshop notes dominate the nose here. Plus menthol and liquorice. There is also plenty of fruit, like pineapple. Wood and caramel are added on the palate. All the notes come together again in the finish, albeit somewhat in quick succession. The finish could be a little longer.

Really great! The Yellow Caroni of course first very similar, but not as deep and intense. I find the Yellow Caroni really good, but you definitely need the right day for such an intense barrel aging. You don't have that "problem" with this one, which makes it much more "everyday". Even with 5 years less of tropical aging, you still have high intensity, deep, ripe and complex flavors here, both on the nose and on the palate. What the Caroni nerd wants, he gets here definitely

I do feel like this is the better version of the hangar duo. It is like the 55% but just a bit, well more. The fruit shines through a lot more, and the mechanic workshop is less pronounced. Still by far the best 1994 out there.
