19.07.2025 Retasting at the Nordlichter Treffen. ----------------- Yet another old tasting of a great release. The price of this bottle has since gone through the roof and it has become a rare collectors item. The nose hits you right in the face with wood, leather, licorice, anise, dried fruit and earthy notes as well as a very light roasted note. The palate is dry, very complex and well balanced with dried fruit, roasted oak, licorice and anise. The finish is extremely long and some of the flavours stick to your palate for a very long time. Dry finish with oak, licorice and some raisins.

Relatively classic 70s Demerara profile with heavy dried fruits, plus a somewhat harsher spicy note here compared to the 75. Therefore, for me slightly behind the representative distilled a year later.

So, Guyanese rum history and trying to say something relevant… I find it rather subtle in the nose with mostly wood and leather and some typical Guyana sweet notes in the background. It’s complex and layered on the palate, dried fruits evolving to warm wood and bitter roasted coffee flavors, leaving an old oily leather finish that stays present for a long time. Because of the age I expected more astringency, but it doesn’t dominate. As a whole it’s very harmonious. It’s been in the glass for about 90 minutes now and it keeps on giving. And now to throw some cola and ice cubes in with it (just kidding) 😂

Strong leather and wood ... Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums were aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

A bewitching nose of woody sweetness with varnish, solvents, leather, licorice and bitter molasses. Then, in the background, dried fruit and even yellow fruit. A touch of cedar wood and black tea. Complexity is not an empty word here. The first palate is lively, woody (cedar), soft and with a fairly present wood varnish. A fine bitterness, leather, prunes and dried fruit form the mid-palate. The finish is long, and strangely enough, the bitterness gives way to a lovely woody, fruity sweetness. An incredible rum! The empty glass is incredibly complex. Thanks Artur for the sample.

Outstanding and always impressive to see how little today's PMs have to do with the old Demeraras. Very intense and complex attack. There are overripe dark fruits and dried fruits such as plums and wild berries. There is also plenty of dark sweetness such as cola, caramel and brown sugar. And of course WOOD, but very nice wet wood that harmonizes wonderfully with the rest. Very strong, oily and initially sweet in the mouth. The dark fruits are still there, but then slowly give way to the very spicy woodiness with a lovely bitterness Supplement: Tasting in September last year. In the meantime, it can hardly keep up with various other PMs from the 60s and 70s. Nevertheless, this is still a very good rum

Dark espresso, overripe plums, wet wood and bitters. Absolute dream material. If you happen to have been born in the same year that this rum was distilled, you'll feel even more when you have it in your glass. I like 1974.

Vielen Dank an Oli das ich die Möglichkeit habe, diesen schönen alten Rum probieren zu können. Dunkel, leicht röstig, Vanille, etwas Lakritz . Wenig fruchtige Noten und im Abgang leicht bitter. Sehr geschmeidig im Mund. Der Abgang ist sehr lang und warm. Einfach toll :)

Nordlichter Treffen 07/25: In der Nase Leder und Lakritze, Süßholz insgesamt sehr dunkel und Frucht ist nur im Hintegrund wahrnehmbar. Im Mund kräftig und Komplex. Sehr dunkel holzig und Lederig. Langer trockener Abgang mit Noten von Schwarztee und Kräutern. Schön das ich den probieren konnte aber der Silver Seal hat mir aufgrund der Fruchtnoten (Pflaume, Rosine) besser gefallen.

Nordlichter Treffen 19. Juli 2025 Unglaubliche Nase, schöne Lakritznote! Dunkle melasse Im Mund geht einiges ab, Lakritze, Anis, etwas Kaffee (Kenia?). Trockenfrüchte aber doch etwas adstringent. Sehr dunkel, super Teil!

Oh mais quel nectar des Dieux ! Le nez est extrêmement dense et enivrant : on y trouve beaucoup de bois humide, de réglisse, d’anis, de mélasse, de cuir, de tabac et de thé noir. Des fruits secs lourds viennent appuyer sur le profil pour le rendre plus rond, concentré et aromatique. Un côté chaleureux se dégage avec les épices. La cerise sur le gâteau vient de cette note de pêche et des solvants qui se dessinent après aération et viennent tonifier le verre. Un nez des grands soirs. La bouche est de toute beauté, à la fois amère et élégante, intense et complexe, avec un alcool parfaitement intégré. Beaucoup de notes sombres reviennent au palais, notamment le bois humide, le tabac, le cuir, les notes torréfiées de cacao et de café, les épices (réglisse, cannelle, anis), la mélasse et cette facette brûlée du caramel. Quelques notes herbacées et de thé noir donnent un peu de fraîcheur qui va bien avec l’amertume des arômes. Les fruits secs et les baies noires apportent une rondeur inattendue à ce profil absolument magique, aussi profond que savoureux. Une véritable merveille gustative. La finale est splendide, infiniment longue et élégante, amère sur les notes rôties, épicées (réglisse, anis, cannelle), sombres (tabac, cuir), torréfiées (café, cacao), boisées et pourtant gourmande sur les fruits secs et le caramel cuit. La fraîcheur refait surface avec les notes d’humidité, le thé noir et les herbes. Une bouteille grandiose en tout point et qui a tout d’un monument historique pour rentrer au patrimoine mondial du rhum.

A perfect Port Mourant with outstanding alcohol integration, a complex and well-balanced profile as well as an extremely long and complex finish. I don't know if I'll be able to taste a better Port Mourant than this one in the future !

Truly a great PM from velier so much intense nose with the bitterness and prunes I love, the taste also bitter but it does so much more the sweetness in the back and complex palate just round this amazing old rum off with a touch of perfection I love this old pm stuff

Direct comparison to 1975 brother. Similar on nose, fruity, prunes and peaches, licorice, anise, tea, some tobacco and wood. Palate hits you with complexity, roasted and bitter, dried fruit, molasses, coffee, woody,, some walnut notes too. Very balanced in harmony, alcohol is better integrated to 1975, overall I like it better. Very complex rum. Old demerara style with bitterness finish. Looong finish:) 1974 wins over 1975 but both are great rums.

Worth a high rating for sure, the best PM I have tried so far, it’s like a history book to tell you what PM tastes should be like before Guyana government decided to combine rums industry. Glad the PM is still keeping quite similar style over such a long time, but this 1974 still one of the best and shows the great sticky mochi, dark chocolates and toffee combinations, superb rum indeed

Velier with the big guns. This is a heavy rum with loads of wood influences. Anis and coffee, and while it makes all these quite well, I am missing some fruity notes to counter balance. It falls heavy in one direction
