Paranubes Criolla Oaxaca 2022
Olive brine, bacon fat and green pepper — this Mexican cane-juice rum tastes more like a savory snack than a spirit. Made at Paranubes from fresh sugarcane juice at 54.6%, it's intensely vegetal and salty, with sun-dried cane and a solvent edge. Fans call the aromatics wild and unusual; others find it too meaty. Nobody calls it easy.

On the nose I first got stagnant saltwater puddle, but also hot dog water, olive brine, sun-dried bagasse and rancid coconut. From a distance I get sweet beets and a bit of that smell you get in humid Spanish forts from the sixteenth century. The palate is hard to describe but I get rubbery notes, salt-infused cane juice, blanched spinach, olive oil, and watercress. Someone with a better trained palate than mine might get lots of other nuances. The finish is short to medium but it’s got this fading sweetness reminiscent of artificial sweeteners (e.g. aspartame), and of course, the residual heat from the 54.6% ABV.

super meaty, not my cup of tea at all...

I just dont like the taste...

The nose is very similar to the regular Paranubes Oaxaca rum, but the tastes and finish do differ. While you still get the heavy olive notes, the tastes is much more salty in the Criolla. Th finish is a bit more cloying with some menthol and solvent being more pronounced. Not my favorite expressions, it may take time to find a use for this rum.

Nasty meaty, not mine at all. Unfortunately, they only have unaged and very young rums. But it's amazing how good they are, there's definitely potential. They said that they have something that has been lying around for 3 years and should be lying around even longer. No idea when it will be bottled and whether it will then come to Europe. I visited the distillery's office/warehouse/bar directly in Oaxaca, Mexico. The distillery itself is in the mountains, unfortunately they don't want visitors there. I bought a bottle of Anejo RX15229 for the equivalent of about CHF 33.
