Velier Port Mourant UPM 1997
Here's the surprise: at 65.7% this Port Mourant barely burns. Several tasters didn't even peg it as PM blind — the usual salt and anise sink under roasted caramel, nuts, cocoa and tropical fruit, with glue and varnished oak in the background. One called it his "liebster PM bis jetzt." Oily, creamy, long. A tropically-aged Velier Demerara that leans elegant, not brutal.

How does Velier Port Mourant UPM 1997 taste?
Aggregated from 52 community reviews.
Oily, caramel-rich tropical Port Mourant Loved almost across the board — full, oily, caramel-and-wood PM with the alcohol beautifully integrated. A few note a slightly sharp mid-palate; the recurring real gripe is the price.

To cut a long story short, the wife also said "it's good, you can buy a bottle"... If it wasn't so expensive, I'd love to... What a grenade, I'm glad I pulled myself together and gave it the time in the glass, so it could unfold perfectly and I could enjoy its full potential.

A superb rum, incredibly balanced and complex on the nose. The profile is both delicate and intense, something we're not used to from Port Mourant. The varnished wood and the floral and herbaceous notes typical of the alembic are refined, but the sweet heaviness of Demerara and the fruity notes are more pronounced than usual. A harmonious, intense and deep profile. The attack on the palate is exquisite, halfway between Port Mourant and Diamond, with heavy notes of burnt sugar and caramel, powerful yet elegant oak, spices abounding alongside cocoa, tobacco, nuts and dried, exotic fruits. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, just sumptuous. The finish has an almost eternal sweetness, reminiscent of some Foursquare wines, with caramelized notes, coconut, cocoa and spices. There's an almost buttery quality that makes for a truly ecstatic finish. The fruitiness and woodiness are also on point. An extraordinary Port Mourant, delicious, powerful and complex, a real gem.

Awesome, cool that we were allowed to taste this rum in the Rum X Rarities Tasting. And what a difference to the equally long aged, continental Port Mourant of the same vintage. The typical markers (salt, anise) almost sink into the perfect toasty caramel sweet tropical wood ripeness here with nice stickiness, nuts, cocoa and fruit. Would not have recognized blind as PM ... My favorite PM so far ❤️
Review by Giorgio Garotti
I was expecting an intense, concentrated PM with its characteristic green wood note present in so many of its expressions and instead I ended up with a profile much more like a uitvlugt! However it remains very balanced with a very creamy and pleasant part and the wood is integrated perfectly!

"RumX Ratities 8 !

Drank many times, never took notes about it, great tropical fruits and woody combination, but a rum on the dark side

Very nice nose, lots of glue, tropical fruit and oak. With time in the glass comes a very nice caramel tone and nuts. The alcohol is well integrated. In the mouth great. Nooks and crannies but still very, very good. Insanely oily. Long finish. Extremely awesome caramel! Thanks to Düdo for the sample!!!

wow, very nice PM!

On the nose, palate and finish a dream! With just the right power.
Review by DomM
Rich nose dominated by vanilla and candid fruits as well as candid herbs which remind me of fancy sweets. Similar sensation on the palate. Has a nice creamy texture to it.

RumX Rarities day 8. A classic Demerara nose with varnished wood, leather, smoke, encaustic and tropical fruit in the background. The palate has a gentle attack, then develops lots of aromas. Prunes appear and incense transforms the English club into a medieval church. Smokiness is more pronounced than on the nose. Slightly unpleasant spiciness on the mid-palate. The finish is long on wood/plum/smoke/incense. A very fine rum, the kind that tells a story. I like it very much. The empty glass sees the tropical fruit reappear. The spiciness of the mid-palate takes a few points off.

Preislich leider inakzeptabel.

Qualitatively excellent rum. But unfortunately does not meet my taste.
