Velier Port Mourant UPM UPM 1997
Here's the surprise: at 65.7% this Port Mourant barely burns. Several tasters didn't even peg it as PM blind — the usual salt and anise sink under roasted caramel, nuts, cocoa and tropical fruit, with glue and varnished oak in the background. One called it his "liebster PM bis jetzt." Oily, creamy, long. A tropically-aged Velier Demerara that leans elegant, not brutal.

How does Velier Port Mourant UPM UPM 1997 taste?
Aggregated from 52 community reviews.
Oily, caramel-rich tropical Port Mourant Loved almost across the board — full, oily, caramel-and-wood PM with the alcohol beautifully integrated. A few note a slightly sharp mid-palate; the recurring real gripe is the price.

RumX Rarities day 8. A classic and powerful Demerara nose with varnished wood, leather, smoke, waxy notes, and tropical fruits in the background. The palate starts gently, then develops a lot of aromas. Prune appears along with incense that turns the English club into a medieval church. The smoke is more pronounced than on the nose. Slightly unpleasant prickliness in the middle of the palate. The finish is long with wood/prune/smoke/incense. A very beautiful rum, one of those that tells a story. I really like it. The empty glass reveals the tropical fruits again. The prickliness in the middle of the palate takes away some points.

... Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums have been aged in the tropics for several years by mistake, and no one has refilled the barrels. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

Very nice nose, lots of glue, tropical fruit and oak. With time in the glass comes a very nice caramel tone and nuts. The alcohol is well integrated. In the mouth great. Nooks and crannies but still very, very good. Insanely oily. Long finish. Extremely awesome caramel! Thanks to Düdo for the sample!!!

A superb rum, incredibly balanced and complex on the nose. It has a profile that is both delicate and intense, something you don’t usually find in Port Mourant. The varnished wood and the floral and herbal notes typical of the still are refined, but what really stands out is the sweet heaviness of Demerara and the fruitier notes that are more pronounced than usual. A harmonious, intense, and deep profile. The attack on the palate is exquisite, halfway between Port Mourant and Diamond, with heavy notes of burnt sugar and caramel, powerful yet elegant woodiness, spices bursting alongside cocoa, tobacco, nuts, and dried and exotic fruits. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, it’s just sumptuous. The finish rests on an almost eternal sweetness, reminiscent of some Foursquare rums with caramelized notes, indulgence on coconut, cocoa, and spices. There’s almost a buttery side that gives a true ecstasy at the end of the mouthfeel. The fruitiness and woodiness are also spot on. An extraordinary Port Mourant, both delicious, powerful, and complex, a true rare gem.

wow, very nice PM! Balanced fruit, spice, and wood notes with well-integrated alcohol. Not at the top of the PMs, but still one of the nice bottlings. Thanks RumX for the opportunity.

Awesome, cool that we were allowed to taste this rum in the Rum X Rarities Tasting. And what a difference to the equally long aged, continental Port Mourant of the same vintage. The typical markers (salt, anise) almost sink into the perfect toasty caramel sweet tropical wood ripeness here with nice stickiness, nuts, cocoa and fruit. Would not have recognized blind as PM ... My favorite PM so far ❤️

Very special. Lots of tropical notes, then beautiful pm notes in the finish.

Possibly the best PM I’ve tasted so far 31/10/24: Delicate nose with butterscotch and vanilla. Demerara, dried fruits and wood

To cut a long story short, the wife also said "it's good, you can buy a bottle"... If it wasn't so expensive, I'd love to... What a grenade, I'm glad I pulled myself together and gave it the time in the glass, so it could unfold perfectly and I could enjoy its full potential.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
I was expecting an intense, concentrated PM with its characteristic green wood note present in so many of its expressions and instead I ended up with a profile much more like a uitvlugt! However it remains very balanced with a very creamy and pleasant part and the wood is integrated perfectly!
Review by DomM
Rich nose dominated by vanilla and candid fruits as well as candid herbs which remind me of fancy sweets. Similar sensation on the palate. Has a nice creamy texture to it.
Review by Jarek
On the nose, palate and finish a dream! With just the right power.

Qualitatively excellent rum. But unfortunately does not meet my taste.

RumX Ratities 8! Completely crazy, a real PM with a superb balance. An ultra well-integrated alcohol that barely warms, a real salted butter caramel, with a hint of pepper! I loved it. In summary, my tasting notes: Nose: Caramel, Glue, Oak, Vanilla, Tropical fruits, Burnt sugar, Salty Palate: Woody, Caramel, Black pepper, Spicy, Oak, Tobacco, Butter caramel, Intense Finish leaning towards: Anise, Brown sugar, Coconut, Butter

Wonderful Demerara that has everything you would expect from a great rum. Lots of caramel, spices, vanilla, and nuts from nose to finish, along with several other aromas. Tropical fruits (unfortunately) only on the nose. The wood is perfectly integrated, as is the alcohol.
Review by DutchRumPirate
What a wonderful stunner this is! The nose is wonderfully fruity, caramel, varnished oak, a touch of nutty and sticky. A wonderfully soft, sweet nose. On the palate, it's so smooth. Warm, full, with slightly sharp notes, but the alcohol is very well integrated. A bit oily, sweet from the fruit, leather, black pepper, and the woody and nutty notes also come through well. It all feels light, so not heavy on the palate. These notes flow beautifully into the long finish. With a hint of anise and a very slight dryness. It's a full-bodied yet subtle pleasure. Simply quality.
Review by Johnny Rumcask
The initial nose is very alcoholic, which dissipates after sufficient standing time. Beautiful profile with wood, pleasant bitterness, espresso, some wood, slight sweetness, and a long finish. Really enjoyable. Unfortunately, the price is unacceptable.
Review by Buddudharma
Rum Rarities #8: Unlike other tropical PMs, the spices here take a back seat, and the typical "wood in saltwater" note is rather subtle but fits wonderfully into the overall picture. Instead, caramel and nutty notes dominate, combined with a great intensity and creaminess in the mouth. A real treat!
Review by Bob the Drunker
Drank many times, never took notes about it, great tropical fruits and woody combination, but a rum on the dark side
