J. Wray & Nephew LTD. Liqueur Rum (Finest Old Jamaica)

Collectors and history buffs are the real audience here — this is the 1970s Wray & Nephew Mai Tai blend, "liquid history" as more than one member put it. Twenty tropical years show as deep oak, caramelized coconut, dark chocolate and a surprising lift of lime zest and yellow fruit. Low-ester and elegant rather than loud, with a long, dry, tannic finish. Several wish it were bottled at higher strength.

Nose is very intense (despite the low ABV) and complex. Very deep with clearly influence from long tropical aging. Wood, toasted notes, caramel and dark chocolate. Yet not overly wood forwards as there is also an interesting basked of tropical fruits - no fresh and dried. Excellent. Similar impressions on the palate. Here the low ABV is a bit of a shame, however. It is still rich in taste with ample complexity, yet I can only imaging how much power this would have with a bit more alcohol. The nose is stunning. A bit less exiting on the palate but still very intriguing. Nice glimps into the past and a very good rum indeed.

What a grenade. It was my first rum of the day at the GRF on the second day and I've already spent a lot of time on it. This profile really appeals to me. According to the super cool people at Rumauction, it changed again positively after a day with the bottle open. Not that it's only really history to try this rum, I find it very grenade-like. The finish is mega long. I had to take another sample with me. Definitely belongs in my top group.

Lots of tropical wood, beautiful depth, certainly a dream at cask strength.

What a lovely surprise, this is old school with it's intense but not old wood, this is low ester but remarkably watery after all.this time. This really fills the 43% really nicely. I can see how this is the stuff of legends...

Avg Rating 8.3/10 over 2,700 Rums

No rum is more imitated than Jamaican rum. This is the home of funk, the fruity, overripe-banana intensity that drinkers call hogo, made in the biggest pot stills outside Irish whiskey. When the rest of the Caribbean moved to the column still, Jamaica kept the pot still as its house style, and that stubbornness is exactly why its rum is so prized today.
