Saint James 1885
Most of the scores here are as much for the history as for the liquid, and members are honest about that — you're tasting an 1885 agricole that lost its cane sourness over a century in glass. What's left is dark and rounded: old leather, cigar, cedar, dried prunes, marmalade and vanilla, with a long harmonious finish. One reviewer flat-out calls it a legend; another admits he'd have scored lower without the occasion.

How does Saint James 1885 taste?
Aggregated from 12 community reviews.
Historic 1885 agricole, all leather and old wood Rated as much for the moment as the glass, and tasters say so plainly — a genuinely complex, oak-and-leather old rum, but the mythology carries part of the score.

A piece of history. Intense and multi-layered on the nose and palate. A real experience!

Yesterday we had a great evening in my friends man-cave. Lots of laughter and wonderful rums. The oak is also dominant in this one though not too heavy to damage the other elements. A great and heavy rum.

A very good rum for the time, we taste especially a moment of history with manufacturing processes different from those of today.

if you want to pay respect to the vintage, you can rate it a little higher

My rating is due to the legendary nature of the bottle and the fact that I didn't have to pay for it to taste it. Otherwise I would have given it less...nothing to do with the exceptional Bally 1929. The degustative and rigorist side (snob that I am) of the taster aside, it's a moment blessed by the gods to be able to taste this legend for the last time...

The best on agricole is that the rum completly loose the sour taste after 80years in bottle. The taste become rounded, pure marmelade, nuts, vanilla with tipsy of old stuff like you smell when you visit your grandma house. Great rum that last in mouth for about 5 mins. Great for evenings sipping, it is tasty, the taste does not hit you in your face with every sip. The complexity and multiple layers push you to search for tastes continuously. These are also its disadvantage

Legend. Your life is never the same after tasting this rum. I had this rum at Whisky Live Paris some years back and it was one of the best spirits ever tasted.
