Savanna Art of Rhum by Vast 2015
Not the funk bomb people expect from Savanna. This molasses blend leans floral and green — geranium, green apple, herbs — with menthol and licorice, then a spicy, drying oak finish. Several tasters call it a "very round easy sipper" for a summer evening, though a few find it restrained and a touch medicinal. Needs air to open up.

Blind tasting, therefore sensibly without the usual photo. Nose: inconspicuous, almost a little perfumed; palate: soft and round, digestible, solid I don't really succeed in assigning countries. Resolution: RX15667 (Now I'm almost glad to have a bottle of this after all. It is astonishing, however, that the rum scored significantly worse in my current blind tasting than in a previous tasting where I knew what I had in my glass. I find this discrepancy interesting for future trials with other rums).

I'll have to taste it under better conditions because when I see the notes it may be me who had a problem. Overall, I found it green, poorly balanced and with a pungent alcohol. I felt like I was tasting an ESB that had problems during fermentation.
Review by Oliver
Tasted for the first time at ProWein in Düsseldorf. Lots of green apple and herbs (dill?) on the nose. On the palate creamy sweet (in a positive sense) and spicy floral. Some nutmeg and green fruits again. After half an hour the rum opens up and you are rewarded with a great balanced profile. Spicy, some floral and a pleasant sweetness. Alcohol very well integrated.
Review by Rodolphe

09.05.2025 Retasting at our local tasting with Hannes from Whisky Watcher. ----- Still a very good rum ----- #4055 I like the design of the label and the price is OK in my mind. Still some way to go to reach a Grand Arôme ☺️ Fruity with light wood and some light varnish notes i love the caramel on the palate. Draws nice curtains and the empty glass is really nice and I can pick up more caramel and candied fruits.
Review by Thunderbird
The Vast is a very elegant rum with a floral note... it doesn't offer the full savanna aroma, but that's not really missing either. But it is a very good sipper for mild summer nights
Review by Dr.Django
An interesting savanna. The nose is inconspicuous, the palate starts very leisurely, after the empty attack, fermented fruit comes to the fore, especially apple and pear. Everything seems very flowery, medicinal and artificial. The alcohol is not well integrated. Second tasting: -3 points
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
The Lord share is there and quite recognizable with menthol, pineapple gum and gum bananas. The traditional share comes through here overall almost stronger with herbal and roasty spicy notes. Some licorice, some dill but also a lot of green apple! Overall, a successful and tasty blend!

Tasted at the 12th GRF in Berlin: For me one of the discoveries at the GRF. Not top class, but nice Savanna character for an affordable price. Quite round, but simpler than some single cask monsters.

I didn’t take any notes at the Rhum Fest so a more detailed review will follow as soon as I get the chance to sample this rum again in a better context. This was definitely the highlight of the rums I tasted at the Rhum Fest 2023! Edit: Third tasting, I reduced my note from 89 to 85. Floral with delicate spices. Wood, caramel and a hint of licorice. Makes for a very round easy sipper.
Review by HenryL
A nose like I love it. Very multi-layered and herbal with underlying fruit. Unfortunately, it lacks a little complexity in the mouth. It's pleasantly sweet with a slight floral-vegetable note. But overall it is very restrained for the 52%, but the alcohol is incredibly well integrated.
Review by Leo Krüper
Green apple on the nose. Very balanced, round, caramelly on the palate. Broad molasses traditional as you would expect from Savanna without the really big complex fireworks. +1 for the design
Review by LukaŽiga
7,3:On the nose is first of all, floral. Then becomes like a sugar candy with brown sugar and fresh fruit, as some molasses and smoke come into play, menthol and licorice. With aeration, we remain in a certain restraint and a certain elegance, becomes more vegetal with rosemary, grass, is peppery, with an ashy air. 7,3:On the palate, the attack is balanced, roundly smoky with leather, that sets in, with a slight tarry side, brine, waxy. Then spices come in, as pepper, woodiness, is dry. We come across a very black vanilla pod, charred, roasted which seems to be smoking on a toasted oak barrel, some resin, maybe olive join the party, as eucalyptus. So bitterness is inevitable... 7,5:The finish is gently spicy and almost creamy, woody, dry, smoky, waxy, with some plastic, menthol, licorice and vanilla. Well, it needs a lot of rest to become enjoyable...

A pleasant and tasty molasses rum from Savanna 😋
Review by Vincent D

Review by Basti
Spices, wood and chocolate in the foreground on the nose. These are then joined by dried fig, floral notes, coriander seeds and some menthol. Predominantly spicy, woody, tart and leathery notes on the palate. Not quite to my taste in the end.
Review by RumTaTa
Very similar to RX16505 (Moray). However, this one does not have the alcoholic note, is not as intensely fruity and with more spice and wood.
Review by Mirco
better than expected 😊 Typical Savanna DNA, but traditional... As already noted, a restrained nose, which fortunately does not continue on the palate. Nice fruit and good complexity. Nice sipper, but not much more.
Review by mto75
First impression: For a traditional quite 'Grand Arome-esque'. On the nose vanilla, green fruits (gooseberries, green apple), floral notes. On the palate, tobacco, barrel, nutmeg. Many thanks to Rod for the split!
Review by TheRhumhoe
A charming Savanna with an unusual profile, with floral notes (geranium), fresh eucalyptus and aromatic herbs on the nose. Tropical and candied fruits add their share of deliciousness, while spicy woodiness adds character to a highly perfumed profile. The attack on the palate is suave and as verdant as ever, with herbs and floral perfume. Exotic fruit and a spicy, gourmet framework are followed by caramel and candied fruit. The alcohol is well integrated into this round, fresh and harmonious whole. The long finish sees the dried fruit try to fight its way through a seasoned battle between the woody, spicy notes on one side, and the floral flavors on the other, which are as present as ever from the start of the tasting. An original, accessible and tasty profile that has everything to please.
Review by Tim
Very good rum with a very fruity nose that reminded me of chewing gum :-D The fruit notes are harmoniously complemented and the mouthfeel is also good. In the finish, this rum then makes a small turn, because the sharp spices and wood come through, which is why a rather dry feeling.

Scored this on Catawiki for 116eu instead of 155. Flippers gonna try to flip, but all bottles are for drinking ;) So I got a softspot for Savanna. They make great rum in between classic styled Agricole or megafunky grand arome. Molasses or canejuice. This is the more classic style. Comes of as a very well rounded fruity rum. Not too much wood. Full flavoured. Taste: bitter. Bitter oranges. (Dried) apricot. Warm and quite intens. A faint dirtiness just on the background. The bitterness is really there today...but I like that (need to retry to see if it'll be there another time). Campari. Green peppers. It's a well balanced rum. Long finish. Good. No great!

I also got this sample at the 12th GRF in Berlin. I really liked it there. Nose: similar to the unshared (moray eel) but even more floral and fruity. But here, too, the typical medicinal note, which goes well with caraway, liquorice, ginger and clove. Beautiful sweet and sour, yellow lemon with guava, green apple and papaya. Intense sweetness of syrup and honey. Very round. 8.8 Palate: intense and delicious, sweet-spicy-medicinal. Nice intense sweet licorice with caraway and vanilla with a slight saltiness. Also very floral, towards violets. The fruit, which is clearly present, is not quite clear to me; tends towards guava with fig. I like it even better on the palate than the moray eel. 8.8 Great Savanna, which could do with a little more %, but is very round and beautifully intense at the same time.
Review by Jussi Piirainen
On the nose: interesting. Floral, slightly perfume like smell. Hints of green apples. This rum opens up after a while. Really nice. Woodyness is there. Taste: Alcohol is very well integrated, quite mellow and easy to sip. Wood is there, but the green fruits and spices dominate in here. Good amount of sweetness. Finish: Menthol, bitterness. Floral. Vegetal, but in the background. Now this was an interesting rum. Not strong flavours or punch in this one. Maybe something you would want to sip in between stronger rums.

Mein Haus savanna. Sehr feine Nase. Fruchtig floral und frisch. Im Geschmack Apfel fruchtig und frisch. Sehr angenehm zu trinken. Abgang leider etwas zu kurz. Immernoch einer meiner Lieblingsrums.

Review by Piotr Ignasiak
On the nose a bit of vegetables, maybe some licorice. Quite nice and creamy taste, at first wood notes come forward, spices, caramel, with time it settles and is nicely balanced. Alcohol integrated very well. Thanks Rod for the sample.

Review by Jan Lu
Sehr gelungener Rum. Geruch, Geschmack und Abgang sind sehr stimmig. Keine bösen Überraschungen. Gut integrierter Alkohol.
Review by MarcM
Review by DosenZorn
Review by Benoit Mahe
Review by Alexander Rasch
Do not yet know so many Savanna bottlings. This one I found to be very balanced and pleasant. Quite fresh with a well balanced wood note. The menthol note is nice. But overall unexciting. Easy sipping thanks to not quite so high ABV definitely possible.
Review by Sebx
The nose is very fruity, reminds me of white wines from Alsace, and feels a bit minty when the alcohol is reaching. On the palate, it is sweet, woody, warm, and spicy. With an hint of vanilla and caramel. The finish is medium and brings along the woody and spicy flavors. A taste of not enough.
Review by Fuwi
Review by Morgan Garet
Review by Johnny Rumcask
Difficult. The rum is ok, but no more. Some apple, herbs, easy sippin. But the price is completely exaggerated, definitely designed for the collector market. Packaging promises what the content can not keep.
Review by Djehey
Review by Niko
Tasted at Rhumfest Paris, it's not the usual Savanna flavors but it's super well made, easy to drink and nice on the spices. It's a blend of two molasses rums from 2015, distilled in the two different columns of Savanna and notably the historical copper "Savalle" which usually hosts pure juice. No crush on the Vast design but can't wait to discover the rest of the collection!

Review by Mentalo
One of the few rums that became noticeably worse the longer they were in the glass. At the beginning a touch of Grand Arome DNA. Nice herbal and fruity notes. Bit of licorice and spice. Alcohol very well integrated. But the longer it stood, the flatter it became and only herbal notes remained. Difficult to rate.

This is not my cup of tea. Savanna is hit or miss for me, and this is one of the misses. Perhaps one day I will understand and appreciate Savanna better. The flavours are mostly green, vanilla and rubber for me. For me typically one of those rums I really wanted to try but happy I don’t own a bottle.

Tolik ovoce v nekolika malo kapkach tekutiny jste dlouho necitili.
Review by Matej
I think this is my first Savanna. Aroma is very apple juicy and fresh (this should be good for summer drinks). There is also lots of floral notes and almost like hospital aroma (medicine). Taste is one big combination of fruits (apples mostly), spicies and medicinal flavor (cough mixture). The whole taste is very fresh, but at the same time the whole experience is very well balanced with smoothly, dry finish. To be honest, I was expecting something completely different (in a bad way). Overall, it is a very interesting and fresh rum, with very nice fruity and medicinal texture.

Liquorice, caramel, butter and ever-present fruity and floral tones. Definitely worth a try, a very good sample. Anything that says Savnna on it is almost automatically destined for success.
