HSE Rozelieures Single Malt Finish 2013

Most drinkers here land on the same verdict: a well-balanced hybrid that reads as much whisky as rum. The French whisky-cask finish brings peat and smoke, then the cane profile comes through with tropical fruit, vanilla and dried fruit over gentle cinnamon. The oak and malt sit right next to the agricole rather than burying it. Several tasters call the alcohol beautifully integrated at 44%.

Peated whisky-cask agricole, balanced and smoky Widely liked as a smart bridge between whisky and rhum — the peated cask stays balanced, not dominant. If you want a pure agricole punch, this leans elsewhere.

This Agricole has been finished for 8-12 months in former Whisky barrels and that taste dominates totally in nose and palate. It’s first during the medium long finish that it tastes more like Rhum. Probably a great Rhum for Whisky lovers that want to look into the fantastic world of Agricoles.

A rum finished in French whisky barrels. The whisky influence is not overpowering, giving way to a beautiful balance. The nose is marked by notes of peat, smoke and coffee, as well as sweet spices, raisins, menthol and exotic fruits. The whisky only enhances the delicate profile. On the palate, the finish is just right. The peaty, empyreumatic side blends into the background, with notes of tropical fruit, dried fruit, menthol and gingerbread. An impressive rum on the palate, deep and remarkably integrated. On the finish, smoky woodiness vies with exotic fruit and citrus, on a background of cinnamon and a hint of salt. A superb example of rum in whisky finish, expressive, delicate and controlled, which will delight lovers of both spirits.

The whisky cask does not add nicely to this agricole profile, per my taste. While reading consider I'm not a peat fun so my score is consistent with my taste. Sipping is pretty balanced, it's swallowing that the whisky comes into place in an excessive manner that compromises the overall experience. Going backwards, the nose is pretty nice, aged agricole with cacao powder, some earthiness and some impact from the wood, on the palate it's just an average aged agricole rum, not disappointing just not exciting

Needs to rest 15/20 minutes before tasting. Interesting nose, a little less aroma on the palate but richly aromatic. A delicate finish of peat and stewed fruit! A real delight!

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 330 Rums

Le Simon is Martinique's ghostwriter. It is the island's most technologically advanced distillery, yet it sells no rum under its own name, runs no public tours, and ages nothing on site. Instead it distils two of the most beloved names in Martinique agricole, HSE and, until recently, Clement, on stills moved here from their original homes. What you taste as HSE is, in fact, Le Simon.
