Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Classic HTR profile, with sweet vanilla, caramel and dried fruit notes on the nose. On the palate, the sweetness is once again quite present, with typical Caroni HTR flavors and a fairly present bitterness on the finish. The alcohol is also not fully integrated. A great rum, but still only in the lower mid-range of the Velier Caronis.

Un échantillon offert au GRF 24. Un nez plutôt discret avec beaucoup de fruits jaunes, pomme et poire. Un côté végétal aussi, herbes sèches. Des notes d’atelier mécanique assez discrètes, surtout du caoutchouc. La bouche est pleine avec beaucoup de caoutchouc, du goudron, du fût et de la poire. Mais pas grand chose d’autre. Et les arômes diminuent assez vite. La finale est pourtant longue, sur le caoutchouc, le bois et la poire. Assez monolithique. Le verre vide par contre est étonnamment complexe et riche. Peut-être qu’il lui faut beaucoup d’oxydation pour s’exprimer. Regoûté et il me semble meilleur, plus affirmé avec de l’oxydation.

Today we did a widespread tasting with very different rums. Phew, this one kicks a lot of different places. Had to add a little water after which it releases more flavours.

... Caroni je destilerie z Trinidadu, produkujici v dobe sve nejvetsi slavy rum, ktery se pridaval v pomeru 1:10 do namornickeho blendu. Byl totiz moc vyrazny a divny nez aby byl prijemny na jazyku. V roce 2000 destilerka skoncila s produkci a byla uzavrena. Az v roce 2010 se objevili degustatori, kteri si rum oblibili prave pro jeho specialni chut. A zajem rostl. Caroni patri do kategorie rumu "you need to try before you die". Doporucuji, Caroni je opravdu unikatni rum.

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
