Wow... After 33 years still such power... no matter how old these Hampdens are, they remain top-notch! The only downside is that the long barrel aging is starting to show a bit now. But that's complaining at a high level... I'm thrilled 🤩 Today a little cross-comparison with the RA JMC: The TRC isn't as intense on the nose as the RA, but on the palate it's much more pronounced and intense. The RA, on the other hand, is almost soft, but more "drinkable"! They’re pretty close... brilliant Hampden essence.

Exhausting probably sums it up quite well😆 a decent broadside of esters made accessible by quite a lot of wood, even if you would never blindly type 33 years here... But that's just the thing with continental maturation that after 30+ years not nearly as much happens as after 10 years tropical, so I'm still not a fan of these largely continentally matured rums... For me, the olive brine with a little unripe pineapple dominates here, similar to tepache. Brine, sour pineapple, green and black olives and light marzipan notes and strong, bitter-sour oak tannins at the back... somehow it doesn't pick me up, sorry! The predecessors of this vintage were definitely more my cup of tea, but it could also depend on the day!

Tasted together with the Hampden Rum Club 1990 (RX14100) The color does not differ. The nose is wonderfully fruity and slightly fruitier than the Rumclub, which has a hint more yoghurt/butter. The Rumclub is also a little more intense. Overall, very inviting and uncomplicated without the brute force of younger bottlings. The Rumclub is a nose ahead here with more complexity. On the palate, the Rumclub has something bacony/smoky that the RA doesn't have. The RA then again has a nice transition from intense fruit to brine and olives - I like it very much! The Rumclub is also a touch more complex on the palate. The fruit returns in the finish and lingers for a very long time. There is a little barrel influence, but in no relation to the long time in the barrel. In direct comparison, the RA seems less complex to me and therefore more palatable. These long continental matured Hampdens are really something great, they manage to hide their true age with ease, there is not too much wood or even bitterness anywhere. But if you take a closer look, you notice how round the time in the barrel has made the former rough edges of youth.

My first impression is that it suits my taste exactly. It's almost too drinkable for me, which makes it very dangerous. The taste lingers in the mouth for a long time. Not bad for a continental. I don't find it too woody either, which I had suspected. Edit: Now I've finished what's left in the bottle. I don't like it that much anymore. It degraded quite a bit after opening.

Everything wonderful, but without real edges and corners. The bottling is very smooth, it’s a formidable vintage. On the nose, lots of pineapple and glue. On the palate, oily and besides the classic markers, puffed rice. Balance is very good but not perfect. A very good rum, unpretentious but noble. For a 9, it’s not enough for me.

Nose: Wonderfully fruity with lots of pineapple, papaya, mango and banana. Ester is no longer so strong, rather in the background for me. Slightly acidic and a little barrel (wood notes) Palate : Slightly oily in the mouth. Here the fruitiness subsides a little but the wood and bitterness come through. Minimally musty . Alcohol very well integrated. Finish: Long but rather bitter and woody. Later some fruit is added again. All in all a great rum but it falls short of my expectations. In my opinion, it has lost a little too much of its bite and funk... but this will certainly inspire others. I think the PLV is pretty good for a 33y allten HD.

Today I compared the new RA JMC #212 with the RA JMC #213 and the RC 90 C<>H. The three years younger #213 gets a little more on the citrus and sour cream, the #212 is more on tangerine and cake batter, but objectively speaking the differences are really small. The RC is a bit out of competition, as the rest of the sample was very small...but with what was left, it seems milder than the two RAs. I had the #213 at 92 points, then the #212 now gets 91 points...

Intense and complex nose. Lots of tropical fruit on the palate (especially pineapple), glue and a great creaminess. More barrel influence than its 1990 siblings, but by no means bitter or too woody. Relatively little marzipan. Dangerously drinkable. Excellent Hampden!

Little 1990 C<>H cross-tasting with 2x RA, RC Ed. 5, TWJ and TRC. The second RA bottling indeed is also very nice. The additional aging has taken off some more edges and rounded out some intensity in the process. Still a very good representation of what the vintage can deliver, just a bit less exiting than the younger bottlings.

#4507 07.12.2023 A very nice and fruity rum with medium roasted wood notes. The palate is oily and warm and medium dry with fruit and esters. The finish is very lond and also medium dry with light pineapple. Draws really nice curtains in the glass. The empty glass has some vanilla and faint cherry notes.

The nose is already delicious. But not an absolute top-class 1990 on the palate, I would say it's a little past its peak. A great rum, but no 90+. For me a good 88/100. The release price of around €260 for a 33-year-old Hampden is absolutely fair.

Very good. But I'm still more a fan of the tropical-aged ones. Update: I've since sold the full bottle and am now enjoying the rest of the sample. I still think it tastes good to me (it even got better with a bit of air), but in the same price range I'd rather look for something tropical-aged.

Even the smallest tasting should always end with a Hampden ☺️. Here is a very nice, intense marrow with a remarkable (continental) age of 33 years! Nose: of course, intense esters before anything else. But then come the many subtleties. Fermented pineapple with lemon, a hint of honey, fruit vinegar, solvent with glue. The long maturation is noticeable in the rich butteriness and brioche dough, which capture the acidic esters well. Becomes more and more pleasant with time. 9,0 Palate: very pleasant, intense esters. Astringent at the beginning, then becoming increasingly creamy. Pineapple marzipan with tangerine. Slightly woody, which suits the rum perfectly. Full-bodied and meaty-bacon. Glue and fruit bread. Great on its own! I don't have a direct comparison with other old Hampdens at the moment, so 9.0 from the momentum

An der Nase dominieren Holz und Gewürze, Klebstoff und trop. Früchte. Am Gaumen neben tropischen Früchte auch ordentlich Holz und Gewürze und eine leichte Bitterkeit. Abgang für meinen Geschmack etwas kurz. Insgesamt ein solider Hampden, doch nicht ganz auf dem Niveau anderer 90er Hampdens.

Once again a very good 90s Hampden, but in my opinion it has slightly passed its zenith. For me, the astringent bitter notes dominate a little too much in the finish. I miss the typical yellow fruits.

Des fruits trop mûrs, au nez, un côté fermenté, des fruits frais et du bois de cèdre. Une entée de bouche assez douce, amère avec des notes de fermentation. Des fruits trop mûrs et des fruits frais. Le bois est présent mais pas envahissant. On ne sent pas du tout l’âge de ce rhum intemporel. La finale est équilibrée, à mesure que les goûts parasite disparaissent, les fruits se révèlent. Une autre révélation de cette petite dégustation de Hampdens High Esters.

Wow, what an elegant fruit melange on the nose! Beautifully balanced, multi-layered, a pleasure to smell. On the palate, the age takes effect, wood, spices, multi-layered aromas that extend into the vegetal. Great complexity - Hampden from continental maturation is a real pleasure.

From start to finish, it's right up my alley. Even after so long, this Hampden still packs a punch! Esters, tropical fruits, pineapple, just a little wood. The alcohol couldn't be better integrated! The rum is downright drinkable, which will unfortunately hurt my wallet.

Ein solider Hampden, der vom Alter mehr verspricht, als er dann bietet. Reife Ananas, eine ordentliche Holznote, Alkohol durchschnittlich eingebunden. Die kontinentale Reifung hat das getan, was in 30 Jahren möglich war. Begeistert hat er mich nicht, schon gar nicht für den Preis.

Dieser kontinental gereifte, alte Jamaicarum ist nach meiner Wahrnehmung sehr süß, filigran und raffiniert. In der Nase habe ich eine süßliche, volle Fruchtigkeit von tropischen Früchten wie Banane, Ananas und Mango. Dann Vanille, Birne, Mandel und überreife Früchte. Butterige Ester, Klebstoff und leichte Fassnoten harmonieren perfekt mit der Fruchtigkeit. Am Gaumen überrascht mich dann sofort eine Likörartige Süße. Ananas, Ester, tropische Früchte, Vanille, Mango, Marzipan und mit viel Butter karamellisierte Früchte lenken fast schon von den filigranen Fassnoten und der Olive ab. Der Alkohol ist perfekt integriert und trägt eher zu mehr Süße bei. Der lange und harmonische Abgang bildet sich aus Fassnoten, Ananas, Vanille, Estern, Mango, Röstnoten, Butter, Oliven und Cola. Dieser Rum ist sehr ausgewogen und süffig. Ich bin echt begeistert von dieser süßen, butterigen Fruchtigkeit. Vielen Dank an @Banana Joe für das köstliche Sample 😋

Ingenious! Recognizably Hampden high ester, but more exciting thanks to more wood but without being too much or making the fruit disappear! Very round, the esters are a little toned down (compared to a young C<>H). Alcohol perfectly integrated. The star here is the complexity and the balance! Absolutely exceptional, and I've come to love exactly that. I like it just as much as the HGML 1983 (which is 1 point better) and for me it's on a par with its 1990 sister barrel (more fruit and in your face, less balance and elegance). Only the HGML 1989 is still clearly in the lead

Wunderbarer Hampden. Für 33 Jahre noch überragend frisch. Das Profil ist leicht säuerlich getragen von vergorenen Südfrüchten sowie in der Nase einer prägnanten Klebernote. Der Holzeinfluss ist da und gibt dem Hampden die notwendige Grundlage, ohne überhand zu nehmen. Interessant, dass sich nach 33 Jahren der Fasseinfluss sich so moderat zeigt. Der Abgang ist sehr schön ausbalanciert, die für Hampden berühmten Teer/Dieselnoten sind da, aber ebenfalls eher verhalten. Rundum gelungene Abfüllung, aber für die aktuell aufgerufenen Preise und in Anbetracht einer 0,5l Abfüllung zu teuer. Sollte man auf alle Fälle probiert haben.

Parallelverkostung von: - RX271: RumClub 26y.o. - RX8041: TRC 30 y.o. - RX7787: RA 30 y.o. - RX11796: SdR 31 y.o. - RX15404: RA 33 y.o. Aus diesem Jahrgang gibt es keinen schlechten Rum, und doch sind im Quervergleich merkliche Unterschiede erkennbar. Für mich haben der RumClub und der TRC heute die Nase vorne, beide sind komplex und fantastisch ausbalanciert, der RumClub mit etwas mehr Power und Tiefe, der TRC mit perfekt integriertem Alkohol. Auch der jüngere RA ist hervorragend, die Alkoholintegration ist jedoch ein klein wenig schlechter, daher 1 Punkt Abzug. Der SdR kommt mit perfekt integriertem Alkohol daher, ist jedoch etwas schwächer in Sachen Tiefe und Pointiertheit, zudem ist der Abgang etwas weniger komplex und interessant. Der ältere RA ist nochmal etwas flacher, daher letzter Platz für heute.

Still beautifully fruity on the nose despite its age. Above all, the typical Hampden note that is often associated with pineapple, but also a lovely pear-like sweetness. After some time, however, the cask comes through in the form of vanilla notes. In the mouth, the difference to the Hampdens from other vintages that I have had is somewhat greater: it is beautifully oily and intense and, in addition to the typical pineapple note, also brings sweet mango and a little brine with it. In the finish, the acidity of the pineapple comes through again at first, but later develops into notes of toasted barrel and a much too salty pickled olive. All in all, a beautiful and complex rum that takes you on a long journey. In this case, however, it feels more like a return trip after a vacation to me: I like the nose much better than the aftertaste that remains at the end. Delicious, but falls short of (high) expectations.

Für mich eine Spur zu holzig, hätte etwas früher aus dem Fass gekonnt. Aber das ist Jammern auf hohem 88er Niveau 😉. Die 1990 Hampdens sind halt einfach genau das, was ich an Jamaika so liebe. Schön, dass die Preise für diese Juwelen wieder sinken.

Puh, that’s a tough one. The nose is really promising, a lot of fruity esters, roasted almonds, vanilla and overripe fruits. The palate delivers the same but can’t follow up to the initial expectations. It is way too dry, almost astringend to a level that it feels out of balance. The finish is the same. I think a few years before it would have been much better. Overall a nice drop but I am glad that the FOMO wasn’t strong enough this time. Thanks to RumTaTa for the split.

Ester Heaven: Great Hampden cinema with the beloved esters, tropical fruits, lots of grilled pineapple and a balanced sweetness-acidity ratio. It needs some time to breathe. The nose is a tick better than the taste. For a higher rating, the alcohol should be better integrated and the whole thing should be a little more complex. Conclusion: great stuff

Waiting for this. 33 y.o. Hampden! Nose: ripe Cantaloupe Melon !!! So rich. Overriped mango, pineapple, pears, guava & other yellow and tropical fruits. Melon ice-cream, some candies. Some esters, vanilla, buttery. It's perfect. Palate: Boom! Blow of the taste! Rich overriped tropical fruits. Fresh, sour pineapple, melon, pear. Sweet fruits candies, oily texture, tropical juice. Lemons, delicate oak, very complex esters, little bit of glue. Aftertaste: long, rich, esters. Lot of tropical fruits, candies, lemon, some esters. Conclusion: really fantastic rum. Great balanced. Over the course of 33 years, the esters have become very soft. Dominate of fresh tropical fruits & candies. I think, it's almost perfect Hampden. Highly recommend !

Ester auf die Fresse. Da ist auch erstmal egal ob 3 Jahre oder 33 Jahre. Sicherlich ein herausragender Rum, aber wenn man ehrlich ist, reift da mehr oder weniger nur der Säure Fruchtkorb vor sich hin, da profitieren die DDLs dieser Welt doch deutlich mehr von dem Lagerungsprozess. Unterm Strich bleibt ein schlechtes PLV und eine in Vollendung gereifte Elsterbombe die nur von einer Handvoll Jamaika Freaks überhaupt in einer Blindverkostung erkannt werden dürfte.

Pěkný, vyvážený Hampden. Ve vůni hodně tropického ovoce (ananas), estery, lepidlo, v chuti se přidává trocha soli a oleje. Fajn zážitek, vliv sudu nepřebíjí rum, jak jsem se trochu obával. Určitě doporučuju ochutnat.

Read full review →I was worried that the 33 years would emphasize the barrel too much. You can certainly taste the wood, the tart notes provide an undeniable astringency. Some people will say: it could have come out of the barrel 2.3 years ago. Maybe so. Nevertheless, it is quite smooth overall, the alcohol is superbly integrated and the taste lingers beautifully in the mouth. You have to like the combination of wood and ester - I like it!
