RA Panama Rum PMD 2004
Whisky drinkers curious about rum are the real audience here. This 19-year Panama, bottled at 58.2%, tastes unusually smoky and malty — burnt sugar, cocoa, coffee and a dry ashy finish that several tasters pegged as a peated single-malt cask, though the bottler never spelled it out. One found it "too medicinal/sweet." Not a typical soft Panamanian.

What is that? This rum leaves me a little confused. In addition to a rather Panamanian basic character, this rum has a clear whisky influence. Whether as a finish, intermediate storage or even initial maturation in a whisky cask (as opposed to the typical bourbon cask), this rum has clearly been given smoke and malt. Unusual, as such maturations are normally always peddled, so I wonder why this is not mentioned here. The finish is also clearly alcoholic, so despite being 19 years old, there is still plenty of room for improvement...

Interesting rum with a well noticeable Whiskey note. The combination of various notes, the ABV and Barrel is a great adventure. Btw the barrel and ABV is integrated very well!

Delicious Panama rum with an interesting whisky note. Creamy on the palate with burnt sugar and lots of cocoa notes. A rather alcoholic side emerges on the finish. Nevertheless, a nice rum for a cozy evening. After a little breathing, the (slightly smoky) whisky finish becomes more and more dominant.

A good rum from Panama, but somewhat one-dimensional. Rather short finish with a longer alcoholic note. In my opinion, some Panchos are much better....

I was actually looking forward to a delicious old Panama rum, but this one has been 100% aged in single malt barrels and I'm guessing it's from smoky barrels with a pre-seasoning like bowmore or talisker. If you knew that beforehand it would be fine, but this is a real disappointment. The whisky aroma is very dominant and overshadows the otherwise certainly beautiful rum aroma. What a shame! I don't understand why they don't work more transparently here!
