MHOBA Dead Reckoning Rum Mhoba - South Africa 2020
Anyone who likes Mhoba's ester-and-pineapple funk but wants a red-wine-cask twist should look here. The wine finish brings currants, red fruit and a treacly sweetness that plays against the glue and overripe tropical notes. Several tasters call it complex and syrupy, though a couple felt the cask overshadowed the distillate. Chewy texture, long finish, and honestly a lot going on for a two-year-old rum.

How does MHOBA Dead Reckoning Rum Mhoba - South Africa 2020 taste?
Aggregated from 25 community reviews.
Fruity Mhoba funk meets red-wine cask Most find this a fruity, ester-driven Mhoba lifted by a strong red-wine cask — complex and syrupy. A few think the wine influence goes too far and prefer the classic distillate.

An interesting experiment with Mhoba in a red wine barrel. The barrel influence is already very strong, but the Mhoba also comes into its own. You can try it, but it's not a must in my opinion.

Another Mhoba in a glass. I don't find it really convincing either. From memory from my last Mhoba crosstasting there are better ones. I hope the next 3 samples that are coming in will convince me more. It's good, but unfortunately nothing more.

The red wine barrel works excellently for my taste. Opulent sweetness on the palate full of caramel, red fruits, wood, spices - pleasant complexity, despite its young age already with a pleasant balance. Very tasty without becoming banal. Great.

Richtig leckerer Mhoba. Nur 2 Jahre alt? No way!

Review by Scottyg
Real unique taste with several flavours punching through vanilla, medicinal, fruit and ending with slight floral finish that lasts long. Liquorice comes through toward the end. Very smooth and easily drinkable.

Interesting, my first barrel finished Mhoba. It works well, the quality and interest of the distillate with some barrel influence. A tropical and ester heavy nose, not quite the classic Mhoba nose but elements of it. The mouth is intense and interesting, layers of wine and currants with some glue and esters. The finish is roasted, with caramel, and tropical fruit.

Read full review →Quite a curious rum though as it shows elements of both young and more mature rum. It's another example of Dead Reckoning and Justin Boseley being happy to push things and issue something a little different. There is nothing safe about this release. Kudos to Dead Reckoning for releasing this....
