Renegade Études New Bacolet (Upper Combe) 2021
Opinions land all over the map here. Some call it a standout of the Renegade lineup and even compare it to an aged Sajous; others find it thin, young, and let down by the alcohol. Expect grassy Agricole notes, green apple, sugarcane, raisin and a touch of oak, with a bitter edge on the finish. One taster flags it as a possible starter into cane-juice rum.

Very different from the "Pearls". Less weird and maybe less exciting for some. Still very nice. More of a Spanish style ron combined with vegetal Agricole rhum. More American Oak in the base.

Clearly expected more. Unfortunately, the alcohol bites. Otherwise, a tad better than the Pearls, but a lot of room for improvement in particular the alcohol integration.

Tasted this interesting cane juice/Pot Still rum at Sweden Rumfest 2023. The Etudes is the second step in the Single Farm Origin development. The first step was totally unaged Pre Cask rum from different areas in Grenada. This is the distillate released 2021 as Pre Cask New Bacolet now aged for 18 months in first fill American Oak Casks and Premium French Oak Casks.

I just like this a lot, after a long time something surprised me so much, I would compare it to an old Sajous! And the price! It's free!

#5113 15.02.2025 Running a few samples at home. Nose Light wood, faint smoke, fruits, cinnamon, light dried fruit, light mango, sugarcane. Palate Fresh, light wood, faint roasted, light mango, sugarcane, oily, lightly sweet, light prunes, light Agricole. Finish Medium to long, fresh, light wood, fruits, light citrus, faint grass, spice, light prunes. Empty glass Vanilla, faint caramel, light grass, light apricot. Needs to rest for a while for it to settle properly or add a few drops of water. This is not a rum for everyone but could be a starter into the Agricole world.

This is another crscker from renegade... Nosing Pepper smacks you in the face then grass olives and chives Nosing after leaving 15 minutes is like sweet fruit Tasting Agricole start with the grassy notes but oak comes through .. I get a marzipan taste right at the end

Nice nose, reminds me of bourbon, a bit boring on the palate, alcohol not well integrated.

Continuing with the studies with the new bacolet. Again, some apple but also a much clearer sweetness, especially neat raisin in the nose. Very powerful. On the palate initially also then it becomes somewhat bitter before in the finish again something sweet shines through.Overall but rather somewhat disappointing was the Pre-cask new bacolet but one of my favorites.

Fresher Agricole scent, quite fine for the short aging time. Taste very nice combination of fruit and sugar cane. For me, it lacked a little and I could imagine a whole bottle in my collection. The only thing I would fault is the bitterness on the finish.
Review by ordogh
Far from complex and intetesting. Sweet smell with green apple, some vegetal notes. The taste is ruled by alcohol. Some sweetness and peppers, but lack of depth and complexity.

No Renegade is not for me :-)
Review by Buddudharma
For me, the weakest rum of the three Études bottlings. Very restrained profile without depth and complexity.

Sempre pazzo, ma più in stile rispetto Pearls
Review by Sebastiaan Linssen
Unique distinct smell that i could recall even after a few hours. The taste is similar to the smell. Interesting rum to try due to the use of cane juice and the influence of the terroir. I think I would not sip it pure due to the unique taste. Would keep it as part of my rum library to let other people taste this unique rum. I would he interested what how it would taste if you mix it.

Definitely a standout from the renegade lineup for me.

I think unlike the standard rating, i liked this the most from the first aged releases. Alcohol integration is good and has some nice tropical and sweet desert qualities. Still it does not really excite.
