Super nice and harmonious nose. Compared to the 12-year-old, there's clearly more caramel and, alongside the spicy woodiness, it almost leans towards a cinnamon direction. There's also a bit of meaty character. On the palate, again lots of spice, leather, and wood, as well as dried fruits and vanilla. Brown caramel and roasted nuts plus cinnamon come through. The finish is long and, like the nose and palate, very complex. Wood, caramel, and fruity notes blend harmoniously with leather and earthy accents. I'm amazed at the big difference three years of aging makes. After just under an hour, I can still detect some cherry on the nose. Thanks to @DanielS for the sample.

Compared to the 12 year old this one is fruitier and it has more complexity and smoothness to it. The nose is typical Caroni and it's rounded and intense with a bit of industrial flavour to it. The palate is very complex and fruity with smoky oak to it. The finish is very long and fruity with smoked oak to it. Price to quality is good.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: The HTR profile comes through, overall rather dry, little sweetness. Thanks to the reduction, it's quite accessible without offering huge complexity. Apart from that, a solid Caroni from tropical aging with a classic profile.

Intense on the nose with some smoke and dirt/chemical notes taking center stage here. Nice dirtyness, not too much complexity and fruits for me only in the background. Reduction doesn’t hurt too much here. More balanced on the palate with more vanilla and chocolate alongside some dirt. Here the reduction in ABV is quite noticeable regulating in a thin(ish) mouthfeel. Not enough power and complexity to make it to the top of the 98 vintage.

Sehr geiler caroni. Sehr intensiv, ausbalanciert und komplex. Der 12er und 21er gefallen insgesamt aber dennoch eine gute Spur besser. Dennoch bringt er alles mit was man erwartet : Rauch, Frucht, verbranntes Gummi, Dreck und eine feine Mineralität.

8,4:On the nose, the first impression we get is with roasted wood and its notes like caramel, burnt sugar, underneath there are dried fruits, tar and an orange peel. After airing the rum, yellow fruits arise and balance the first dull impression, the wood is charred with chocolate, nuts and caramel, spicy with vanilla and molasses waxy.Some meat notes also appear. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is fruity and woody with an orange, tropical fruits and spicy, roasted wood with caramel, perhaps toffee, nuts, vanilla, becomes dry quickly. Then the industrial notes come out quite intensely with bitter notes like tar, rubber, there is some menthol.The molasses is vegetal with mint, dark with licorice, balances the palate nicely and luckily tasty dried apricots, currants, prunes and peaches that improve rather rough, dull start. 8,5:The finish is long, tastier than before, with notes from the palate lingering on and with some new ones, which improve our tasting experience like red fruits with a raspberry and some smoky charred wood with creamy notes. Edit:23.3.25-resting, oxidation helps, 0,1 higher.

Un Caroni relativement léger dans sa constitution. Le nez laisse filer la gourmandise dans les premiers instants avec le bonbon au caramel, le toffee et le sucre brûlé. Par la suite, un ton plus sec et sale prend le relais, avec le caoutchouc, le goudron, le pneu de vélo, ce côté fumé si singulier, le cuir, les épices les fruits secs. C’est un profil attrayant et doux, mais qui manque un peu de longueur au nez. L’attaque en bouche revient sur ce toffee au caramel si particulier, qui donne une impression de douceur très marquée. Derrière, le boisé épicé et vanillé, les noisettes grillées et les fruits secs se font une place et confirme la légèreté du profil. Ce n’est qu’après quelques instants en bouche que le côté pétrolifère et fumé émerge tout doucement du palais. L’alcool n’est pas perceptible dans cet amas de gourmandise. La finale est assez longue, sucrée et caramélisée sur le toffee mais un peu plus sèche et amère avec le cuir et la saleté du profil trinidadien. Les épices (vanille et réglisse notamment) sont soutenues par des fruits éparses dans ce manteau de velours. Heureusement que l’étiquette nous rappelle ce à quoi nous avons affaire, car ce Caroni se révèle très gourmand et facile à boire. Il n’est pas aussi complexe et intense que la plupart de ses congénères, mais il a le mérite de proposer une facette plus sobre et douce qu’à l’accoutumée.

Leichter Caroni mit den typischen Noten. Tolle Aromatik allerdings nicht so komplex wie viele andere Caronis. Sicherlich ein guter Einstieg um in die Welt der Caronis einzutauchen. Der Preis steht hier in keinem Verhältnis mehr.

Un rhum goûté dans un restaurant, la bouteille est à la moitié. Un nez sur le fruit, peu d’atelier mécanique et comme une acidité. La bouche laisse apparaître comme un carbonique, de l’orange amère et un léger caoutchouc. La finale est un peu courte pour un Caroni. Le verre vide fait la part belle au boisé, au fumé et aux notes d’atelier mécanique. Le moins intéressant de la série 12-15-17-21-100th, mais tout de même un beau Caroni avec un vieillissement tropical.

Die Nase ist zu Anfang recht alkoholisch, ein paar Minuten Zeit im Glas helfen hier. Danach sehr ausgewogen mit viel Fruchtigkeit, Würze und Caroni-Dreck. Am Gaumen auch zuerst pfeffrig scharf, weniger fruchtig, und dafür mehr Tanniene und Teer. Zum Nachklang hin empfinde ich die Bitterkeit als zu stark und störend. Gerade so "sehr gut", gefällt mir am der Nase sehr gut und lässt dann leider nach und ist für meinen Geschmack im Nachklang zu bitter. Das PLV reißt mich nicht vom Hocker.

Heute im kurz Test 3 '98er Caroni. Der 15 Jahre alte von Velier, der Rum Nation und die No.3 von Colours of Rum. Der Verlier mit Abstand die Abfüllung von Rum Nation, der knappe Gewinner ist der CoR. Aber alle drei können meinen bisherigen Favoriten der '98er, den Precious Liquors nicht gefährlich werden.

Typical Caroni rum. However, not very special at a low drinking strength. The aroma is there, but not particularly complex. From the standard series, in my opinion, the weakest of the bottlings. Still, a rum that's fun to drink.

Die Nase ist sehr intensiv aber auch sehr ausgewogen. Holznoten harmonieren zu verkohltem Grillfleisch (essen will man das nicht aber das riecht lecker). Im Geschmack super leckere Eichenreste die beim teeren der Straße auf dem Boden übersehen wurden und nun Teil der Straße sind.

Nase typisch nach Caroni mit dominanten Rauch/röstig und Teer. Dazu Leder, Holz und schwache Früchte. Allerdings finde ich die Nase eher zurückhaltend. Im Mund dann schon intensiver, zusätzlich ist der Abgang lang. Insgesamt ein vermutlich durchschnittlicher Caroni mit hohem Rauchgehalt. Nicht wirklich das, was ich an einem Rum schätze, erkenne aber an, dass hier ein stimmiges Paket vorliegt.

Bleibt etwas hinter den anderen tropisch gelagerten Caronis zurück, die ich bisher probieren durfte. Immer noch sehr gut aber doch ein paar Punkte drunter. Die typischen Marker sind da, aber halt etwas weniger geil und unharmonischer.

Continuons la trilogie Caroni avec le 15 ans. Donc 3 ans de plus de vieillissement que le 12ans et 2 degré en plus. Nez puissant sucré-fruité. Mélange de colle et goudron bien marqués. Moins accessible que le 12 ans en 1ère impression. En bouche c’est puissant, c’est chaud. Le boisé est omniprésent avec des notes de café. La finale est longue comme tous les Caroni. Je le trouve moins fun et agréable que le 12 ans.

Heute nochmal die Reste nachverkostet. Ich bleibe bei meiner eher moderaten Bewertung. Hat zwar die erwartete Caroninote, aber im Verhältnis zu meiner Erwartung finde ich ihn ziemlich eindimensional und flach. Kaum frucht, viel holz. Kein schlechter Rum, aber für das Geld gibt’s bessere.

Oproti velier caroni 12 je vylunamně méně technická. Ve vůni jsou podobné tóny jako o 12, jen jsou mnohem jemnější a kulatější. V chuti jde ta technika velmi velmi do pozadí, naopak se objevuje máta a ovoce. Zalvěr středně dlouhý, příjemný.

טעימה בבר נכון לנקודת זמן זו. אין לי ניסיון עם ההוצאות האלה של קארוני. מהמעט שכן יצא לי לרחרח אני חייב להגיד שהרום אכן משובח, אבל יש הוצאות רבות שאני מוצא אותן לא משהו סוחף מידיי. שאלתי בקבוצת הרום שלנו מי מהסדרה הזו הטוב ביותר ורבים ענו ה15. אז כן יש פה משהו כבד. מלוכלך. עצי. בלי הרבה פירות וכמובן הזפת והלכלוך. מבחינתי הוא פחות טוב מקארונים אחרים שיצא לי לטעום. לא רע או משהו. פשוט פחות טוב.

Die Verdünnung auf Trinkstärke hat dem Caroni seinen Bums genommen und wird dadurch ein gefälliger Einsteiger-Caroni, der relativ flach und schwach ist. Die typischen Aromen sind vorhanden, aber die erwartete Komplexität geht verloren. Dennoch leckerer Rum, auch wenn man sicher mehr vom Namen erwartet hätte.

A really distinct ethyl note followed by deep burnt sugar and sawdust. On subsequent sniffs the burnt sugar gets stronger, almost giving a Demerara adjacent impression. Heavy, but surprisingly gentle on the front of the palate with tons of smokiness, wordiness, burnt sugar, and a touch of currant. The proof really hits at the back of the palate aerating that classic Caroni smokey-rubber. The finish is long, but strikes a balance between the rubber and burnt sugar. Overall incredible—I’m going to have to find some more Caroni :)

Geruch wie ein schöner alter Agricole, nur mit weniger Spitzen; Geschmacklich in den ersten Momenten ziemlich harmlos: fruchtig und süß, aber das dicke Ende kommt dann: holzig, dick, schärflich jedoch nicht überwiegend alkoholisch. Und zunehmend bitter bitter bitter im Abgang. Update: nach einziger Zeit im Glas: reicht genau wie türkisches Halva! Mega lecker!

... Caroni je destilerie z Trinidadu, produkujici v dobe sve nejvetsi slavy rum, ktery se pridaval v pomeru 1:10 do namornickeho blendu. Byl totiz moc vyrazny a divny nez aby byl prijemny na jazyku. V roce 2000 destilerka skoncila s produkci a byla uzavrena. Az v roce 2010 se objevili degustatori, kteri si rum oblibili prave pro jeho specialni chut. A zajem rostl. Caroni patri do kategorie rumu "you need to try before you die". Doporucuji, Caroni je opravdu unikatni rum.

Rate 8.0 Tasted it a few times back in 2015 or 2016. Was not a big fan of Caroni back then. A lot has changed 😉 31-07-2025 - Rate 8.7 A lot has happened during the last 8 years. Are more found of Caroni. Non the less, it tasted pretty good now. Notes of leather, wood, glue, tar and smoke. Palate is round and nice with mostly wood and tar with a hint of roasted nuts and dried fruit. Medium finish whit hints of tar, leather and wood.
