Caroni Kill Devil (The Whisky Barrel) HTR 1998
The surprise here is how well 65% hides its teeth — one taster says it "doesn't drink like a monster" despite the strength. Classic Caroni tar, rubber and bicycle-tube funk sit next to caramelized tropical fruit, vanilla and peppery spice, with an oily mouth-coating body. Fans of old Trinidad rum find plenty to sit with for an hour; a couple call it slightly imbalanced next to the best Caronis.

How does Caroni Kill Devil (The Whisky Barrel) HTR 1998 taste?

Oily 20yo Caroni with tar and rubber funk Split between "damn near perfection" and merely very good — the tar-and-rubber Caroni signature is all there, though a few taste better balance in other bottlings.

29.01.2022 The big Caroni tasting with old rum buddies, good food, snacks and a lot of talking about old times. Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Wood, light roasted, tar, workshop, dried fruit, light leather. Palate Warm, wood, light roasted, tar, light rubber, fruits, leather, cherry. Finish Medium to long, wood, light tar and rubber, cherry, faint chocolate.

Nose: In addition to the alcohol, a pleasant vanilla

Well damn again!!! Second taste of a Caroni rum and it’s utterly, UTTERLY beautiful - like its smaller 46% brother but different as well On the nose - initially it’s quite strong, bite-y and sharp. The full 65% ABV comes out swinging from the glass! After letting it rest a little you get solvent, glue, vanilla, caramel, perfumed floral mess to it with a hint of leather to it…. Gorgeous nose that can keep you entertained for a good hour! On the palate - oh its oily and mouth coating again! Costs every square inch of your mouth and tongue BUT it’s not burning hot, it’s very well balanced and doesn’t drink like a Cask Strength 65% ABV monster that the nose implies…. It’s just a lush warming rush of flavour of peppery spice, caramelized tropical fruits and some caramelized vanilla - it’s like the 46% ABV version but with the flavours a lot more intense! This is damn near perfection for me This has also rocked my world definitively and yet again (!) another bottle that’s shot right up to the top of my need list - my brain isn’t designed to have its world rocked twice in a row consecutively!!

Another bottle opened for some time but always a pleasure to come back to it My first caroni Nose : rubber, solvents, tropical fruit Taste : rubber, oily, tropical fruits, wood, burnt sugar Finale : long, woody, slightly bitter, rubbery

Initial aroma of plum and oak. Not as much burn aroma here. I get more red fruit on the nose. Pours dark mahogany in colour. Big pepper in the mouth. Some oak, something like peat almost. Some tangerine, rubber. Not sure I vibe with this one as much as the best Caronis I've tried, it's a little imbalanced. Long finish. Sample shared by xamsx.

Read full review →This is a very good rum. It’s certainly better than the other 1998 Caroni I tried recently, but it doesn’t quite live up to the more exceptional
