Velier Caroni Trilogy Heavy Rum Guyana Stock HTR 1996
Caroni devotees who chase the tar-and-rubber signature are the crowd here. This 1996 Velier leans hard on the barrel — wood, roasted notes, oil, leather and that classic garage-and-tar bite, with a little chocolate and vanilla underneath. At 64.46% it's warm and dark. Several tasters loved it but called it the woodiest of the Trilogy, one saying "super woody" over time.

05.06.2026 I am in the mood for Caroni today so I decided to dig out some of the samples I have. No spitting today for sure 😃 ----------- 14.03.2020 Had a nice afternoon and evening with friends. Notes. Dark in colour. Nose: wood, roasted, orange, light smoke, leather, tar, rubber. Palate: warm, wood, roasted, oily, chocolate, leather, tar, rubber. Finish: long and warm, wood, roasted, chokolade, nutts, tar, cherry.

I had the chance to taste it blind, and my money was on an old Demerara. A nose of very, very old tropical Demerara, with lots of wood, but balanced by a fresh, almost minty character. Old tar, used to dampen the boards of sailing boats, and spruce too. The palate follows the nose quite closely, with a slight tartness: old tar and varnished wood. The finish is very long, both powerful and elegant, woody to the point of madness, but balanced thanks to the menthol. There's even a hint of salinity on the finish. A rum that tells a story of sailing ships, fragrant warehouses, old ropes and the sea. Splendid!

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023 / further tastings: A formidable rum with fascinating complexity. The fact that I have an undeniable affinity with the 1996 vintage of Velier Caronis may play a role, but the complex interplay of aromas here, both on the nose and on the palate, is absolutely remarkable. Barrel influences, dark spicy notes that reach into earthy-tobacco, harmoniously embedded fruit flavors (more present on the nose than on the palate), elegant vanilla sweetness from the oak barrel with a caramel undertone - and all of this flanked by the oh-so-typical dirty notes of tar, rubber and glue...if you like Caroni, you have to like this. An excellent release, which is already fully convincing when enjoyed in isolation, but which still has to lose some ground in direct comparison with other representatives of this vintage - yes, it really can be even better. But then we have been traveling in extraordinary spheres for a long time.

A zajem rostl. Caroni patri do kategorie rumu "you need to try before you die". Doporucuji, Caroni je opravdu unikatni rum.

Great dessert nose. On the palate elegant and perfect wood integration. Great sweetness. Extraordinary Caroni!

Got the chance to cross taste the entire Trilogy set of Caroni 1996. One by one, exceptionally good Caroni’s The RX1472 stood out as the fruitiest on the nose. Leather and the typical Caroni notes also come to the fore. I therefore found this one the most delicious on the nose. The RX3901 had the woody notes from the barrel predominantly present on the nose. My number 3. With the RX5321, the woody barrel notes also came to the fore. But here, some tropical fruit also comes to the forefront. Slightly sweeter. My number 2 on the nose. On the palate, the RX1472 is truly deliciously fruity, with strawberries remarkably coming to the fore. Of the three, this one had the fruitiest character, which predominated. As a result, the typical Caroni notes were somewhat more in the background and came to the fore in the finish. On the palate, this is my number 1 or 2. It is exactly what I’m in the mood for with a Caroni today. For me, the RX3901 had the most woody and smoky notes combined with the typical Caroni notes on the palate. Slightly heavier and more complex. Something sweet and gluey also came through; the finish is slightly less intense and shorter than the RX1472. On the palate, this is my number 3. The RX 5321 is my favorite on the palate. The true Caroni notes come delightfully to the forefront. Leather, garage, tar, and so on. Really more bite. Probably also due to the alcohol percentage. Alternated with delicious fruity notes in the finish. This is how I like my Caroni best. The alcohol is highest in this one, but perfectly balanced. In terms of taste, this is my shared number 1 or 2 spot. But if I really had to choose, it would be number 1.

Strong barrel influences. A little too powerful and dark for the absolute top class of the 96 Veliers.

I still really like this, eventhough i for sure is not the best 1996, it really comes a long way from lesser velier caronis. It is for me the weakest of the trilogy, since it is really forward on the wood. Especially after a time this comes out super woody!
