Here's the twist: give this 23-year Caroni a couple of hours in the glass and it flips from harsh to hypnotic. Tar, bicycle tube, leather and menthol lead, with only a whisper of dried fruit and burnt sugar. Several tasters call it one of the "dirtier," woodier 1994s — heavy, bitter, drying. A wonderfully intense and heavy Caroni we have here! A dirty Caroni with lots of wood. A very dark colour which I guess is the result of tropical aging. A poweful nose. Very spicy and complex on the palate. I am getting petrol, oak and some fruits/mango in the back ground! The wood is very present, getting close to bitter but still very enjoyable. A very length finish. I have a large sample so I am going to try it again in a few months to see what oxidisation does.

Ordentlich dreckiges Profil mit schweren Teer- und Gummitönen, nur sehr wenig Frucht, viel Holz und ausgewählten Gewürznoten sowie einem Hauch Minze. Macht richtig Spaß im Glas. Entwickelt sich nach Jahren in der offenen Flasche weiter und gewinnt an Komplexität. Für eine höhere Bewertung wirkt der 1994er Jahrgang allerdings etwas zu unausgewogen und wild, was für Caroni-Fans natürlich durchaus reizvoll ist.

Mouais... On the nose it's quite nice, rather greedy. But in the mouth, the wood erases everything else and imposes itself through a menthol/eucalyptus/bitterness side that is too present for my taste. I know it's not fashionable to quibble about Velier's caroni but this is a rum that I didn't appreciate personally.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Develops amazing aromatic complexity with a little patience and time spent in the bottle. Rather dry Caroni with only discreet, but very charming residual sweetness and a lot of barrel influence, which is undoubtedly intense, but does not tip into the too bitter. One of the bottlings where the long availability is qualitatively inexplicable. Exceptionally good.

Very nice Caroni expression clearly profiting from its long tropical aging. Heavy on wood and cask notes with a nice touch of remaining sweetness and only hints of fruits. Reasonably dirty as well. Like it very much.

One of the best Caroni rums I've ever tried, at least for me. Incredibly awesome complexity on the nose with lots of tropical fruits, dark fruits, leather, tobacco, vanilla, mint, caramel, and tobacco. On the palate very similar, delicious, just makes it incredibly fun to explore.

Un rhum très foncé d’apparence. 23 ans de vieillissement tropical. Un monstre. Il lui faut du temps, beaucoup de temps pour se révéler, mais alors il devient un rhum exceptionnel. Toujours marqué par le bois, mais avec une complexité et une profondeur d’arômes jamais goûtée auparavant. La finale est infinie et le verre vide, le lendemain matin raconte une histoire à lui tout seul. En un mot : plus il est oxydé, meilleur il est. Le fond de la bouteille est ma meilleure expérience de rhum à ce jour.

Simply wow! Wood, heavy, tar, sweet, easy-drinking. World-class for such a very dry rum. It remains my favorite among the heavy Caronis. Lots of tobacco and tar notes. Compared to the other single casks, you can actually still find this rum for three-digit euro amounts, even though that's still an absurd price, of course.

Kleines Caroni Tasting. Dieser hier ist eher auf der dunklen holzigen Seite. Super intensiv. Bisschen bitter, bisschen Teer. Trotzdem sehr rund, komplex, lecker. Für mich bislang einer der besten Caronis die ich bis jetzt im Glas hatte.

Update: Letzter Rest des Samples hat in Qualität eher zugelegt und der Rum hat nochmal an Leben und Frucht gewonnen. Definitiv eine gute Flasche um lange offen zu haben. 👌 Toller tropischer Caroni. Schön dreckig mit angenehm kleiner (aber feiner) Restsüße, schöner Holz Adstringierenz & Minz/Menthol und verbranntem Zucker / Karamell mit Leder und Tabak. Mit Geduld kommt dann etwas Nuss & Nougat an der Nase plus noch 🍌 und nach langer Verweilzeit etwas Mango / getrocknete Mango bzw ein (ganz kleiner) Hauch tropischer Früchte am Gaumen.

Freshly polished wooden dresser, varnish, fruit and burnt rubber out the back. Very dignified and noble the nose. In the mouth then almost only wood. Dry, astringent. I understand that opinions about this rum are divided, the weak point is in the mouth, in the finish then good again.According to experts, the Open Sample will be even better. Let's see in a few weeks.Edit: This happened nowIn the nose megagut, something more on fruit (mango, banana). You can smell a few hours on it...In the mouth still very astringent, but very complex now. Finish now also a bit more pleasing. Lots of oak and mango. A great Caroni!!!

Extremely dry, fresh, light and bitter like strong Assam black tea with a little mint. Very well balanced, for me personally it is just a little too dry and woody... Nevertheless, an absolute exception for me and really delicious.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Un Caroni qui a beaucoup fait parlé de lui et qui est étonnamment encore « accessible ». Le nez est intense, gourmand et concentré sur des arômes boisés, des notes sombres sur les fruits à coque grillés, le chocolat noir et le sucre brûlé. Le côté pétrolifère ressort avec le cuir, le tabac et les fruits secs. On sent que le vieillissement tropical a fait son effet. En bouche, on retrouve un Caroni extrêmement boisé, sombre, épicé, amer et empyreumatique sur des notes fumées et pétrolifères. Le bois l’emporte sur le reste, d’où ce côté controversé et qui fait perdre de son potentiel. Les saveurs sont rustres, mais la texture reste élégante et soyeuse. L’alcool est bien intégré. La finale est très longue, tout aussi boisée, amère et fumée. Le chocolat amer et le tabac croisent les épices, le menthol et les herbes aromatiques dans un palais qui manque un peu de gourmandise. Il s’agit d’une critique de haut vol, mais c’est un Caroni un peu spécial, clairement pas le meilleur mais encore accessible pour certains en termes de prix.

Metallic, burnt, lots of mint and wood, polish, menthol and quite a lot of clove, later chocolate emerges along with an oily sweetness. Heavy Caroni, absolutely special profile. But I find it quite strong, has something KFM-ish about it. Bitter, astringent, mega dry and woody. Not quite my cup of tea.

9,2:On the nose, from the first impression we know a great rum is in front of us, with roasted wood notes like caramel, burnt sugar, leather, spicy vanilla and earthy, minty molasses, as industrial notes are not pungent, actually they are a nice companion to other notes with tar and petrol.The fruits are dried with raisins and tropical with banana. On aeration, real thickness, heaviness of this rum is felt, but is very round and pleasant.It is a bit metallic, medicinal with polish, there is some bicycle tube note, as the fruits present are dried currants and cherries. 9,4:On the palate, the attack is delicious with creamy charred wood notes like caramel, burnt sugar, nuts and spicy vanilla, as the fruits are dried with raisins, apricots and tropical mango. The molasses is minty at first, later dark and earthy with tobacco, black tea and licorice. The industrial notes like tar, bicycle tube, a bit bitter are nicely interwoven in the rum's creaminess.With resting, minty notes are replaced with menthol.The fruits that arise newly are cherries and some citrus and the wood is smoky...Great, full bodied, round rum.👌 9,2:The finish is long a bit more bitter, still creamy and round, dry, dirtier as most of notes from palate linger on with some herbaceous touch..

After 3h breathing in the glass we venture slowly! Undoubtedly a Caroni and what one. Something comes out, tar, bicycle tube the full workshop! Very very deep and dark, brown sugar, mocha! Wow! On the palate, it gets even more, really heavy equipment, tar, mint, bitter and a lot of barrel, it seems partly if he was already over it and the barrel has already taken too much influence, but no, a very big! Incredibly long finish with all the aforementioned influences. A special representative of the 1994 vintage and a very special Caroni that you must have tried as a lover! I am very happy to have tasted this!

After an hour of breathing it becomes clear: really dirty and very dry Caroni - from nose to finish you can taste tar, rubber, wood (especially barrel) and spices. There are hardly any sweet aromas. Very cool, but I've had better Caronis in my glass

I love these technical heavy carons! There's rubber, thinner, wood and leather in the aroma. After a sip, one chews the soul off the wheel, wrapped in a pile of wood. A complex, strong rum. 23 years in the tropics gives it incredible maturity. An epic experience!

Distilled in 1994 and aged for 23 years in the tropics before bottling 6642 bottles again at 57.18%. Once again, we know what we're in for: hydrocarbons, caramelized dried fruit, tobacco, vanilla and a reasonable amount of oak for 23 years in the tropics! On the palate, it's less greedy, as the oak is clearly much more present than its smaller brothers. Behind the wood: tar, leather and spices. Having read a lot of negative things about this 36th release, I even expected a palate more marked by charred wood than this. So in the end, I was pleasantly surprised! I'll have the opportunity to go back to it, as I've got a keel lying around in the cellar...

It really must be emphasized once again how unique these Caronis are in the rum world. You really can't find this complexity and heaviness anywhere else. Yes, they are insanely expensive these days, but they are worth every penny. It's great fun to have a rum like this in your glass. If only I had entered the rum world earlier...

Wowww, what an amazing Caroni. Poured into the glass and tasted immediately. Lovely full, heavy notes. Barrel, oak, metallic notes. Leather and a hint of fruit. On advice, let it breathe in the glass for a good long time. That is when you really notice it "opening up". What a delight. Leather, tar, much more caramel, vanilla, and even fruity notes like strawberry. The finish is wonderfully long with vanilla, barrel, fruit, a bit of mint, and black tea as the main flavors. Delightfully full and complex throughout. What a delightful treat.

In addition to the typical dirty tar and gum notes, a bitter mint note comes through, certainly not to everyone's taste, but I really like it. It is also very full-bodied and lingers incredibly long in the finish. It also seems a little fresher than other Caronis.

After a reasonable amount of standing time, intense Caroni aromas fill the nose. Wood, caramel, herbs, tobacco, leather and perhaps a little cola. The wood and spices initially dominate the palate. Then the spectrum expands to include caramel, herbs, rubber and a few smoky and bitter notes. The long finish is characterized by the intense, spicy notes, the barrel and the tannins. Leather, herbs and black tea follow and fade out with some rubber and vanilla. The herbal note lingers longer in the mouth. Once again a very good Caroni and well worth experiencing. Yes, the controversial Yellow Caroni. I think he's cool! What a brute nose, its greatest strength. Deep, rich and warm aroma. A terrific combination of dried fruit, banana, coconut and lots of forest honey. Tops! Of course, 23 years of tropical aging is hard to hide, somewhat displacing the distillery character. Nevertheless, the typical Caroni flavor is still noticeably present. In the mouth it becomes very barrel, bitter, toasty, spicy but also sweet, full-bodied, with some cherry. A great Caroni, for which you have to catch but especially in the mouth the right day

Oh ja, intensiv würzig, Leder, Tabak, Vanille, angekoleltes Holz. Geschwefelte und getrocknete Frucht, wie Dörrpflaume. Leicht säuerlich. Etwas Minze kommt durch. Süß-würzig-minzig am Gaumen. Sehr Minzig mit Liebstöckel. Jod und Plastik drängen nach vorn. Süße von Marzipan kommt hinzu. Etwas bitter holzig am Ende. Im Abgang bleibt die Minze präsent. Hier vermisse ich ein wenig das Caroni-Spezifische Dreckige. Dennoch schon vollmundig.

Direct comparison between the 36th & 37th release HTR Guyana Stock. This rum is absolutely top class. For me on a par with the 37th release. A little more on the dirty side in the nose and taste. A great overall package.

In der Nase sind die typischen Caroni Noten vorhanden. Im Geschmack wird es dann noch eine Spur intensiver und dreckiger. So macht es richtig Spaß. Er wirkt keineswegs überladen, sondern auch Holz und Minze sind sehr präsent. Der Abgang ist sehr lang und dreckig.

Der Harvey Dent aka Two-Face unter den Caronis. An der Nase rote Beeren, Pflaume, Traube, Minze und Geranien, die Fahrradschlauch/Teer-Noten nur dezent im Hintergrund. Am Gaumen dann aber sowas von einem mit dem großen Hammer über die Rübe: Benzin, Teer, Altmetall und davon nur die abgebrannten Rückstände. Ich mag es 😉

In der Nase recht fruchtig aber auch Gummi/alte Luft aus einem Schlauchboot/Dinghy. Im mund dann schön kräftig, leicht nussig? Aber vor allem trocken und mit ausgeprägter bitterer Holznote (aber noch angenehm). Abgang lang, kräuterig. Alkohol ist sehr gut eingebunden und insgesamt sehr lecker.
