Romdeluxe Diamond Collectors Series No. 12 REV 2006

Opinion lands around a well-liked-but-not-a-favorite spot. This 2006 REV from Diamond runs dark and dry: burnt sugar, old wood, leather, licorice and dried prune, with a smoky-bitter edge on the finish. Fans of the mark call it a lighter, younger REV — pleasant and tea-like — while others find it a touch thin, too roasted, or with the alcohol not fully tucked in.

On the nose, the 2006s are overall - unsurprisingly - quite similar. Dried fruit, subtle spicy and woody notes - perhaps the most obvious caramel note in a direct comparison should be emphasized here. On the palate the obligatory prune, distinct smokiness, leather, licorice, wood, again caramel sweetness - compared to the other 2006s most smokiest. Aromatically quite with appealing complexity. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of overly roasted or smoky flavors, but if that appeals to you as much as the REV profile, you should get your money's worth here. For me, it's a bit too much roastiness as well as medicinal alcoholic spiciness on the palate. For the comparison to the 1994 representatives, I repeat my impressions of the other 2006s: much less heaviness, the plum notes appear here more in tandem with currant, the dark tones of wood, licorice, leather and caramel are much less pronounced. I am inclined - despite the aromatic complexity of this bottling - to speak of "REV Light." While the spectrum of 2006s also has its charm and the character is undeniably recognizable, in my eyes the REV profile benefits extremely from the long aging and resulting complexity. However, the reference points can also be described as almost unfair for the younger bottlings, especially for proven lovers of the 1994 REVs.

Unfortunately this one was a disappointment for me.. The nose is nice, slightly jamaican with some acidic fruity notes, the mouth is also acidic, but consists primary of burned coffee and wood - not very pleasent (and I'm a coffee addict..). Gets better with resting, but the burned coffee and wood keeps being way to profound. Is it drinkable? Yes. But I wouldn't pay it's RRP for it. I haven't tried other 2006 REV's yet, so I can't really compare it and say that it's me who just doesn't like this vintage/mark. Will update if I ever do.

On the nose leather, slightly charred, caramel, dried fruit, vanilla and a slight sweetness. On the palate, everything that the nose promised can be found again. A beautiful 2006 REV with a well-integrated ABV.

#4156 This one is also really nice and I could pick up the flavours when opening the sample. Beautiful dark rum with roasted wood without it being too dominant. Fruits and spices tag along some light leather and licorice. Draws beautiful and slow moving curtains in the glass and the empty glass has some vanilla, smoke and herbal notes.

I like the 2006 REV, but this one does not quite convince me! I lack a little fruit and intensity ! The alcohol is not very well integrated and the barrel impact is already quite pronounced !

A Diamond in the REV style, with an elegant yet lively nose. Spices (chili, cinnamon, licorice, vanilla) and woodiness, tending towards leather, chocolate and roasted notes, blend perfectly with dried fruit and hints of molasses, sugar and burnt caramel. Hints of herbs, black tea and tobacco add a touch of freshness to this dark, warm style. A very pleasant olfactory profile, in the spirit of the 1994 REVs. The attack on the palate is much more bitter and woody. Leather, chocolate, coffee, spices and roasted notes are very present, so much so that fruit is practically absent. There are notes of caramel and burnt sugar, with a hint of molasses and tea flavors. The alcohol is well integrated, but the 53% still makes itself felt. The finish is long and persistent, with bitterness and dark notes that stick to the palate. The smoky, burnt side comes out more strongly on the long finish. A profile that's drier and more intense than expected, but still refined, delicate and generous.
