For a seven-year-old rum at €13, this is of course a good price and is actually available at any Lidl supermarket. But for cola rum (which is probably what this rum is primarily intended for) there is better. The alternative product from Aldi, for example!

Nose: The neck pour smelt rather strongly of a medicinal cherry flavouring, but subsequent pours produce a delicious nose of tinned tropical fruit, wood, caramel and spiced mince pie crust. With deeper nosing, out comes sugarcane. To Ron Rumbero's credit, it is distinct to the equivalent offerings from Havana Club and Santiago de Cuba. The empty glass echoes the caramel and fruit ever so slightly. Mouth: The nutritional information from Lidl suggests some dosage but well below the sensible 20g/L max allowed in a genuine Cuban rum. This probably helps the mouth somewhat for what is an otherwise thin experience, leading to a surprisingly pleasant blend of molasses, fruit (somewhat funky!), leading to nuts and spices. Finish: Leaves the mouth in a spicy, bitter, and sugary whimper, and leaves a disappointing, watery aftertaste. So a knock to the score there. Impression: This is enjoyable bargain booze, providing the cheapest Cuban-style aged rum experience in the UK, with that added sweetness making it a surprisingly good place for a newbie to start their rum journey. Next time I'm at Lidl, I'll keep my eyes out for the 3yo and the 15yo for certain - I just wish there was more information about the distillery and the production behind this kind of thing.

very strange nose of hubba bubba cherry and some baking aroma... the taste is then rather sweet and artificial and reminiscent of Cherry Coke with cola crackers? in the finish again baking aroma and somehow really strange?

It's nothing to be excited about, too rough around the edges and no particular taste to discuss but for the price you pay, you are at least not being deceived. This rum has around 7g/l of sugar and some more expensive rums easily have 2x or 3x as much, so it's the sugar which covers up the flaws in the rum. This is the best I can say about this rum. However, it's not a sipping rum due to artificial taste, and synthetic notes come through even in cocktails so you should look elsewhere for decent inexpensive rum for cocktails.

"Especially not in the Cuban category,. That said Sainsburys have Ron de Santiago 8 Year Old in stock for £25 (sometimes cheaper for club card holders) and I'd go for that personally. Obviously you'll have to get dressed to go to to Sainsbury's though rather than wearing your Pyjama's."Read full review →
