T.D.L Flensburg Rum Company Sea Shepherd (Barracuda Single Cask) 2002
Most tasters land on "very good but no sensation" for this 2002 T.D.L. The nose wins people over — currants, sour cherry, kiwi and that signature mint. Then the palate surprises everyone: at 61.4% the alcohol vanishes, and several call it dangerously smooth but a touch thin and watery. Fans of bright, herbal Trinidad rum find plenty to like; those chasing the heavier RA-style intensity may miss it.

How does T.D.L Flensburg Rum Company Sea Shepherd (Barracuda Single Cask) 2002 taste?
Aggregated from 84 community reviews.
Minty Trinidad, smooth but surprisingly light A rounded, minty Trinidad with fruit on the nose and iodine-salt notes on the palate. Loved for its ghostly ABV integration, but many find it too light and slightly one-note.

A blind purchase that was absolutely worth it! Yes, I have to say I'm even slightly euphoric - what a great rum! While it is still relatively restrained on the nose (and remains so), the fat mint aromas really come into their own on the palate, but not as "light" as with the two RAs of the last two years, but somehow "darker", more bitter, drier - almost as if a good Monymusk had also set its accents here. The alcohol is dosed just right to bring out the aromas perfectly. Yes, this rum is definitely a T.D.L., and one of the really good kind - I'll go one better: for me, it's the best I've ever drunk - right after the legendary CDI (RX944)! 😊 Predicate: lip-smacking. 😋 Chapeau, FRC! 👍 Update 2023-07-21: Well, now the demystification that some have been waiting for. 🤷 Tasting it again today, I can - apart from the mint and the slight euphoria - feel the same way I did back then. The only difference is that I wouldn't put everything on such a high level now - apart from the alcohol, which is incredibly well integrated for over 60%. So, only a slight disenchantment, not a total one. But now the rum seems to have been put into perspective. It's a good one. Oh well, tasted against the new RA T.D.L (RX15401). It doesn't stand a chance against it, it's clearly superior in all respects. Update 2023-10-14: Blue hour, the second: Blind crosstasting with the T.D.L 2002 from Cadenhead's (RX16680). Today, the differences between the two compared rums are quite big. One is pleasantly minty and later a little smoky, the other musty and chalky with poorly integrated alcohol. I liked the former much better. I thought it was the FRC that I had already tasted several times - and was wrong after the dissolution. I see the Cadenhead's as a solid 2002 T.D.L in the lower midfield, 85 points. Unfortunately, the difference on the nose and palate (and the smell of the emptied glass! 😊) means that I have to downgrade the FRC again, from 85 to 81 points.

Nice tasty TDL but I don't quite understand the hype around it... Nice mint kiwi citrus wood combo only for me personally a bit too thin overall (although it has barrel strength it seems watery?!) and also has too much wood overall... I search in vain for the "funk" or power that other cask strength TDLs have here... But it's good to drink and the price was more than fair! Somehow very short finish and a bit boring overall.

Nose: intense with fruits, herbs and some dirty notes. Holds up to other early 2000s TDL bottlings. Palate: now this is really suprising… alcohol is almost not noticeable, making this a very smooth experience. While it is very pleasant, I miss quite a bit intensity which the nose implicates (and I‘m used to in good TDLs). This is a really odd one… not a bad, but very unexpected tasting experience.

Preis-Leistung: ok

I go back on my appreciation a few months later and go up two points. In the end I like this TDL very much. Typical of the best the distillery produces, but it is not too minty unlike other bottlings. I find this one well balanced and very pleasant to drink. The alcohol stings a bit but nothing insurmountable.

I had to rip it open right away...Nose: wow, fresh, fruity, intense, delicious and very round. The alcohol does not sting at all. I find a whole mix of tart sweet fruits. Gooseberry, currant, sour cherry and kiwi, but also kumquat and quince. The whole backed with a distinct mint note and some fine vinegar. There is also a sweetness of caramelized sugar, as on crème brulet with a squeeze of lemon. Slightly woody and metallic at the same time with some solvent and smoke.Palate: intense and delicious. Initially bitter and salty, then immediately fresh mint, which immediately gives way to lemon zest and kumquat. Behind it metallic with some iodine. Gooseberry and mint again at length.Very round and good TDL, wonderfully integrated alcohol. 👍👍

#4595 02.02.2024 Relaxing at home while preparing for a triple tasting next week, phew that's going to be a tough one. This is a pretty good rum with pretty good ABV integration. Medium fruity with some medicinal notes. Nose Fresh, light wood, faint roasted, fruity, light caramel, mint, light medicinal notes. Palate Light wood, faint roasted, cherry, medium spicy, light herbs, light medicinal, cherry, mint. Finish Medium long, wood, light roasted, fruits, light herbs, mint. The empty glass has some mint, faint tar and ginger.

Tasted directly after the Nobilis TDL 2001. Certainly not an easy comparison, since the vintages are very different, but still somehow exciting for me. The Barracuda shows me very round and harmonious, without special corners and edges but overall just very tasty. While I like rums that have some unique selling point, I can't really find that with this bottling. Still, I like it a lot, as it also delivers a typical Trinidad character, but less explicit flavors stand out, as is the case with the 2001 bottlings. Here, fruit and spice, dirt and wood, and sweetness and depth just alternate to create an incredibly rounded profile. I like it very much!

Alkohol phantastisch eingebunden!

Very pleasant TDL. More rounded than others, but less intense. I like.

Heute ein kleines TDL Tasting, mit RX13557, RX 944, RX15670, RX 19670, RX15565 und RX20525. Fangen wir mit dem Barracuda an… Alkohol gut eingebunden, fast schon mild.

Review by TheJackDrop

Smell is really promising. Aromas are very pleasant that is cuddle hour for the nose. Fruity spicy great mixture you can smell it forever. On the palate, however, clearly different. Relatively bitter and less intense than other TDL. Nevertheless, still a very good rum. Especially this nose.😄Nose 90 Palate 80I give good 84.
