Habitation Velier Amrut Indian Pure Single Rum (Collection Antipodes) 2015

One member called it a "cherry bomb" and that's a fair start — milk chocolate, vanilla and ripe yellow fruit like mango and peach, with young oak and ginger underneath. Several tasters love the nose and long finish but agree the 62.8% heat isn't fully tamed. Sits somewhere between a caramel-sweet Spanish style and a cognac-ish agricole.

As a fan of Indian cuisine, I wanted to try the Jaggery Rum. I had no particular expectations, but the rum has me from the first moment ih its spell. This nose is really very nice, like the lovely TDLs but with an intense, ripe, oxidative, yellow partly tropical fruit. Kind of in between caramel Spanish style rums and the cognac-heavy Agricole - great blend of sweetness and complexity. In the mouth the profile is similar, with more prominent wood and a note of sweet black tea (Turkish chay) and heavy ripe fruit: peach.

Exciting profile with classic molasses rum sweetness, but also some Agricole hints. Sweet, fruity, with enough wood influence to bring in some depth - the young age remains recognizable, the alcohol is still a little restless, but all in all this is already on a great level.

On the nose, caramel and vanilla. The nose continues on the palate: not much comes out except sweetness, vanilla and wood, reminiscent of caramel candy. Alcohol not well integrated. Can be drunk for scientific reasons. But you don't have to.

Good keel but lacks aeration. I'll take it back in a few weeks! EDIT after a few months: it's better aerated, the alcohol has faded, but this bottle remains poorly integrated, it's still powerful with a lack of control. It's a pity, because otherwise it's a bouquet of tropical fruits on the palate, with a hint of hydrocarbons and spices. Not bad, though!

Goes in the direction of Spanish style on the nose, with a nice butterscotch note, joined by floral notes. Lots of young wood, ginger and mocha on the palate. The clear alcoholic sharpness on the nose and palate unfortunately lead to point deduction in the B grade.

Neatly made rum, but has a little too many whiskey notes for me. A little more complexity would not have hurt either...

Aged rum

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 16,000 Rums

Aged rum is where the spirit earns its complexity. In a tropical warehouse a barrel loses 6 to 10 percent of its contents to evaporation every year, which is why an 8-year Caribbean rum can taste deeper than a 20-year Scotch. This page gathers every rum on RumX that has spent real time in wood, with community ratings to separate the genuinely mature from the merely dark.
