Velier Caroni Paradise #1 1996
Don't expect the usual dirty Caroni here. This 1996 Velier bottling leans soft and elegant — tropical fruit, caramelized lime and grapefruit, a little mint and dark chocolate, with the classic tar and rubber pushed to the edges. Tasters call it complex and balanced with a very long finish, though a couple find the sweet-pastry side almost clashes with the mechanical notes. High-proof warmth is there.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: HTR/LTR blend in which the classic dirty Caroni aromas only play a supporting role. Nice sweetness, recognizable wood, plus some tar and spice - a great rum, rather on the mild side for Caronis, but there in the top spheres. Excellent.

Un très beau nez, fuité (ananas et carambole, poire et pomme verte) avec des côtés végétaux (menthe et herbes amères), du caoutchouc et un léger goudron. L’alcool est présent puis les autres arômes arrivent avec un net côté pâtissier (sucré candi et massepain) étonnant et masquant presque l’atelier mécanique qui réapparaît en finale. Je trouve ces arômes pâtissiers légèrement écœurants et en opposition aux arômes d’atelier mécanique. La finale est super longue. Un très beau rhum beau et complexe. Comme pour le paradise #2 ma note ne peut que refléter un écart énorme entre le prix et le plaisir (10x plus cher qu’un bon Caroni comparable). Le verre vide est splendide mais beaucoup moins puisssnt que le Paradise #2 et je pense aussi qu’une forte oxydation pourrait révéler beaucoup de choses. Merci Steffen pour le sample.

Truly heavenly, delicious Caroni! Great fruitiness both on the nose and palate, from tropical fruits to caramelized limes and grapefruits, plus some mint, allspice and dark chocolate and some road tar. Very tasty, elegant, complex and balanced with a long finish... The only thing I don't quite understand is whether you have to pay such high prices for this... Many thanks to Sebastian Jäger for the gift!

First nose on varnish but quickly gives way to a much sweeter / powdery nose - with hints of caramel. Attack is quite mellow, well integrated alcohol, quite round, fruity, nearly viscous in texture. Very long finish and quite agreeable. However, a bit lacking in personality

A Caroni Single Cask from a blend that was matured in Trinidad, then in Guyana before finishing in France. We find the influence of Guyana in the nose, tropical fruits, spicy and woody notes taking precedence over the typical tar and rubber. There are some sweet, floral notes and esters as well. On the palate, the dark profile of Guyana brings a lot of sweetness and leaves only some empyreumatic notes. The finish is long and remains on a fruity, slightly roasted, woody and spicy register. Far from the typical dirty and powerful profile, this one distinguishes itself by its sweetness and balance, whose aromas are mastered and the alcohol very well integrated. Still, it needs more to become a real unicorn and justify the price.
