Neisson Straight from the barrel No 249 2018

Sipped neat, this young Martinique agricole leans grassy and spicy — sugarcane, fresh-cut grass and a licorice edge, with a surprising grape/red-wine note running underneath. At 58% the alcohol sits well-integrated; one taster even calls the nose milder than the proof suggests. The finish tips fully agricole. Good balance of orchard fruit and young oak, though the cask is still light.

Direct comparison between Neisson Single Cask 249 and Cask 258. Neisson simply always delivers. Again two great rums and surprisingly quite different. Cask 249 goes in the direction of profile 107: sugar cane, light fruits, vanilla, buttery, creamy, young wood and grassy. Somewhat wild and alcoholic on the palate and finish. 82 points. Cask 258 is definitely on the dark side of the aroma game in comparison. Also sugar cane, dark fruits with old wood, dry on the palate and finish. The alcohol is much better integrated here. 85 points.

the Neisson with the highest ABV, which I had so far in the glass, and I must say that he comes for it on the nose surprisingly mild and balanced. The typical herbal-grassy notes of young Agricoles are present, but also something fruity (towards grape) and vanilla. On the palate, the ABV is then more noticeable, but not disturbing. In addition, coffee, burnt sugar and toasted barrel. No mega-part like the Velier 70th, but very solid, like the Vieux Bio LMDW.

On the nose it is quite restrained... I perceive a wine-like aroma. On the palate it spreads nicely creamy. A pleasant spiciness , sweetness and woodiness shows! Light fresh grass is also perceptible! The finish is almost on the Agricole side!A pretty good bottling!

On the nose:Sugarcane notes, vegetal notes, toasted, light woody notes and it does have grape/red wine note. Taste: Spicy, sugarcane notes, little bit of woody notes. I get like a spicy mixture of allspice, light grassy notes and licorice as the main note while there is light creamy and slightly salty mouthfeel to it. Abv is integrated very well. Finish: Vegetal, grassy and toasted. Light woody notes. Medium finish. Once again very good Straight from the barrel release. Spicy on the taste, more agricole forward on the finish.

Yeah, rum is just the best. This Neisson is proof of that. I expected a really intense spicy and woody Agricole, you can see that too, but it’s actually more fruity and even slightly vegetal.

9,2:On the nose, perfumed, flowery sugarcane, sweet with honey, grassy, candied, round, toasted wood notes like roasted nuts, cream toffee, chocolate, citrus and yellow fruits, bump into our nosetrils, amazing! On aeration, tropical fruits, mandarine, hints of grapes arise, allspice and confectionery, fresh tea, creamy, fermented notes, oily, balanced, complex, almost perfect! 8,9:On the palate, the attack is sweet with sugarcane honey, fresh, grassy, flowery, later herbaceous, fruity with tropical, citrus and yellow fruits, slightly dry with toasted wood notes like brioche, biscuits, nuts, burnt sugar, spicy with allspice, salty, creamy. 8,8:The finish is long, dry&tannic, slightly medicinal, oak is toasted with warm spice, caramel, nuts, slightly resinous, fruits are citrus, yellow and sugarcane is sweet with honey, green, grassy, flowery, vegetal.

Alkohol sehr gut eingebunden.

Neisson

Avg Rating 8.4/10 240 Rums

Neisson is the smallest distillery on Martinique, making under 2 percent of the island's rum, and one of only two still in family hands. Run today by Claudine Vernant Neisson and her son Gregory, it distils on a 1952 all-copper Savalle still, ferments with its own native yeast, and makes what many call the island's finest white rhum. The community rates its aged bottlings among the very best agricole there is.
