Velier Papalin Haiti 2018
Most people land on "very likeable, nothing earth-shattering." This Haitian clairin blend, tropically aged four years, reads floral and grassy with pear, honey, vanilla and a spicy, woody edge — plus that yogurt-tang funk fans know from Hampden. Several tasters note the 53.1% isn't fully tucked in and the cask has smoothed out some of the raw clairin wildness.
The community says- Floral and fruity nose
- Creamy from tropical aging
- But: Alcohol not integrated

The blend of various Clairins does a pretty good job. Slightly fruity, herbal notes, some spices and a slight honey sweetness. Overall, a round bottling with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. However, it is also somewhat unspectacular.

Wow, a complex clairin that is really fun! Great, soft nose. The 4 years of tropical maturation bring a great creaminess. Pear and fresh sugar cane are added. Alcohol very well integrated. A real insider tip!

Not a bad product, its admittedly tasty but all of the Haitian estery, savory, funky flavours have been killed by barrel notes. Whole lot of spicy flavours in that product as well. I think its not worth the money

This is a very nice blend especially when looking at the price tag. I like the nose because it is there from oæe ing the bottle and only gets better whil rested in the glass. Well rounded and fruity with spices and a very nice floral bouquet. The palate is warm and takes off where the nose ends.
Review by BTHHo 🥃
The taste is warm, velvety, of medium softness. Very intense, balanced taste of molasses and warm spices. The finish is pleasant, with a slow development and good persistence.
Review by Johannes
Great, complex Haiti blend! Goes in the direction of Casimir / Clairin. Great price-performance ratio!
Review by Jakob
Appealing rum, impressively complex considering its age. On the nose, fresh fruits, well-integrated wood and spice notes, a bit of lactic acid, and subtle hints of meaty-bacon aromas. On the palate, still a bit wild and expressive, lots of fruit, sharp spiciness, and cane sugar sweetness. A promise for the future.

The third and last of the Papalin series. Has a lot of Clarin.Nose: herbal-spicy, slightly woody and some fruit. First I got a mix of olive, pumpkin and saffron, with a slight vinegar impact. But next to that, honey sweetness and green apple. The whole but stirred in yogurt. In the back also a spicy licorice note. Interesting. 80Palate: herbal-spicy-sweet. Slightly bitter-salty at the start, clearly towards sesame, fennel and olive, maybe even artichoke. Then, however, slightly fruity with plum. But also seems creamy-bacony and toasted overall. A bit grassy at the back. Again, interesting. 80Haiti and its Clarins have a character all their own. This is captured very well here and clearly rounded off by the cross blend. Good introduction to this type of rum.

Nice clairin blend. Great storage for the price. I'm just not sure if it's suitable for the masses. I think the brute ones are simply better with Clairin. Otherwise you could also drink a relaxed round Agricole. Certainly one of the most accessible and beginner-friendly Clairins.
Review by SaibotZtar
Very fresh and floral... not bad but also nothing special.
Review by Fred Tillac
A blend of different casks from 5 Haitian distilleries: Casimir, Distillerie de Port-au-Prince, Le Rocher, Sajous and Vaval. The nose is vanilla, floral, slightly lemony with a hint of banana. On the palate, you add a little fat, a light woodiness and medium length.
Review by Jan Lu
Based on the good reviews, I bought this one. This one is not my taste profile. Somehow too dry, woody and yes, I don't know how to describe it. Something is missing for me. Can't explain it. Will probably find a place at the back of my shelf.
Review by Timo Groeger
Quite a good Papalin. The rum is quite floral and herbal, with notes of vanilla, honey and some wood. However, I think the alcohol is too pungent for 53.1% and could be better integrated.
Review by zabo
Edit: another opened sample less. All in all, a very nice rum and a daily sipper, although I have to say that there are better rums for the price that I would put in my glass. That's why I've downgraded it a little. All in all, a very digestible, well-rounded daily sipper, nothing special, but still delicious.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Very unusual but expressive Haiti with a super intense nose of tropical fruit yoghurt and Christmas cookies. Unusually delicious, beastly and spicy fruity complexity. Reminiscent of candied sugar with Williams pear brandy!
Review by Thunderbird
A well done blend... a blend with fruit and spices... however a bit thin on the palate! The alcohol is also not well integrated. This unfortunately results in a few points deduction
Review by MarcT
Vacation, we have been on the lakes with a Kajak, so a rum is fitting, but isn't it always? I am surprised by the flavours, expected mir esters and got quite the spice, malt and wood. There is some fruit, at the tip of my tongue, but it is short and the cask influence becomes dominant. Nice drink, but would not say it's typical for Haiti.
Review by Schnubbii
Nice part with pear and the typical grassy Clairin aromas. A little astringent and dry on the palate, but overall very round and even better with a few drops of water. Gets my recommendation for the price.
Review by BjörnNi 🥃
Typical rum from Haiti. Light oak, a bit floral to taste. It gets you quickly warm around the heart 😀
Review by Righrum
A nice blend, the clairin spirit is still there in this aged Jamaican rum, but a whole new level of taste is added, especially a creamy side that adds to the sugar cane and grassy notes, without hiding too much the Haitian origin
Review by Stefan L
My nose is starting to close so will have to leave the tasing notes for another day. - New day and now with notes.

10-08-2024 - Rate 7.9 12-04-2025 - Rate 7.5 A very decent Haiti rum. Enjoyed the nose. Spices and a floral garden. Taste with a bit of wood and spices. Not that long finish Does not taste like and other Haiti rum I have tasted. Perhaps caused by the fact that its a multi distillery blend. 04-12-2025 - Rate 7.8 20-03-2026 - Rate 7.4 01-04-2026 - Rate 7.6

Abgang: sehr röstig, holzig/rauchig, grasig, pflanzlich.
Review by Jean Louisss
A very pleasant surprise. This papalin is a little concentrate of exoticism. Fruit and wood combine perfectly, and the copper notes are very pleasant. Finally, the whole is very well balanced and quite smooth. This rum takes you on a journey.
Review by Mike H.
My palate is a little messed up from the cigar and the New Yarmouth that I had just before sampling this rum. I will sample it again with a fresh palate one of these days and will add my tasting notes then.
Review by Alex Kunath
MMn a very great rum. Wonderful fruity nose with light ester notes, which can also convince on the tongue!
Review by Wagnerlicious
An exciting rum that offers a variety of aromas. Fruity on the nose, cherry notes, glue, rooibos tea, caramel. On the palate, the Agricole component comes through clearly, sugar cane, grassy, also fruity notes, some Esther and honey to finish. I smelled the glass again the morning after and was surprised by the aromas of fully ripe sweet cherry. Top value for money in my opinion.
Review by DosenZorn
Unmistakably Clairin on the nose. Vegetable with that yoghurt note that I otherwise only know from Hampden. Great, multi-layered and yet very round. The alcohol should be better integrated on the palate for a top rating. All in all, very well done, a very solid blend that you can't go wrong with if you like Clairin. However, you should be aware that it comes across as very smooth compared to unaged or only briefly aged relatives.

Very nice. Not great like some of those releases but its tasty and carries the lovely Haiti style.
Review by Buddudharma
Very nice blend with everything that characterizes Haiti. Great fruitiness, creamy mouthfeel, a pinch of wood. A great sipper!
Review by ilRummista
Buon rum, al naso e al palato ha note chiarissime di frutta tropicale in particolare ananas e banana. Abbastanza fresco anche se leggermente acidulo al palato. Bevuta non impegnativa ma comunque di carattere
Review by Kamil Křenek
I feel something very specific there, but I still can't figure out what it is
Review by Stijn Zino
Very complex nose, sweet fruity, short finish. Overall nice rum.
Review by Philip M. 🇧🇪
15/10/2025: sample from Stijn. Great Haitian blend with fresh, fruity, floral and warm notes both on the nose and palate. Decent complexity. The alcohol is integrated well and the price to quality ratio is very good.
Review by Christoph H.
Very special. Right at the beginning, an enormous citrus and ginger note, like in a sauna infusion, pulls up the nose in a brutal and pungent way. My nose is challenged to the maximum and has to come to terms with it first. Then comes the classic lychee and quince note that I typically find in Vieux Sajous, but which is overwhelmed by the first impressions. It doesn't really go well together and comes across as quite chemical and artificial to me. In general, I would say that this is the most unbalanced nose I've ever had in a glass. With a longer wait, it becomes drier and drier on the nose and has something of a very tart white wine with corresponding acidity. In the mouth it is somewhat more harmonious, but also starts off very strong here. A rather artificial limey ginger note predominates here, rather sweet at the beginning, then it becomes more tart. There's a lot of quince again in the finish, which is by far my favorite part of the rum For people who like that kind of thing, it's great value for money, but it's not mine
Review by Quentin Leseigneur
My first Haitian rum. The aroma is very pleasant, with a very dense, gourmand sweetness. The attack follows with very well-integrated alcohol. A little disappointed afterwards, as the palate remains rather flat.
Review by Sebastiaan Linssen
Before writing this review I have tasted this rum in several occasions. This is a very good rum, one of the better rums I've tasted. Pleasant nose, even better taste. Alcohol very well integrated. Would consider to buy an extra bottle.

Un riassaggio lasciandolo respirare un po’ si apre e lascia spazio a note più gradevoli. Non una gran bevuta ma passabile…
Review by Jack M
Really hard to describe/ pick distinct notes out in this, but it’s a great quality and different rum. Well balanced. Interesting notes - sweet (honey and vanilla), floral, fruit (pear and pineapple) and spice (cinnamon).
Review by Anubis
A powerful rum close to Jamaican flavors, heavy and dense
Review by Snorre Brouer
Fresh and floral with hints of spices and zest. To be honest, nothing special. Is it drinkable? Yes definitely, but it lacks complexity and the abv could be better integrated. I recommend a sample before buying a bottle. Price to quality is OK, but life is too short to drink (a whole bottle of) mediocre rum.

Very nice rum I would definitely buy a bottle again. The nose is very floral , sugar cane to agricole, orange curry , vanilla, a little coconut and wood. Taste: after swallowing it, saliva immediately starts to flow, well integrated alcohol, warming, floral meadow combined with orange orchard, a little wood and coconut. Finish: long lingering, better and better with every sip.
Review by Mateusz
Very well rounded and super delicious. I would note that whilst it’s complex, balanced and layered, it does take away a little bit from discovering one type fresh sugarcane rum wonders!
Review by Solidfunk
Great initial fruit profile. I get passion fruit and lemon. The citrus keeps on for a while in the mouth. Some oak, maybe peaches in the finish. Nice balance and super fun. Pours dark golden. Had a sample of this thanks to xamsx.
