Habitation Velier Hampden DOK 2017
Here's the surprise: this DOK isn't the feral ester-bomb the mark usually promises. Five years of tropical aging rounded it off, so alongside the glue, nail polish and grilled pineapple you get a real fruity sweetness and spice. Several tasters call it tamer, rounder and more drinkable than continental DOKs — some even wished for a touch more oak. Give it plenty of air.
The community says- Huge pineapple esters
- Long finish
- But: Sharp vinegar edge

How does Habitation Velier Hampden DOK 2017 taste?
Aggregated from 147 community reviews.
Intense but rounded tropical-aged DOK Loved across the board for its intense pineapple-and-glue Hampden profile that's unusually rounded for the age. The catch: a few find it one-note or catch a vinegar edge from the short aging.

A very good surprise that this young Hampden is full-bodied and exuberant. The power of the DOK mark is noticeable with a very fruity, phenolic and floral nose, with fermented, medicinal notes and a hint of camphor. This heavy, intense profile comes through on the palate, with some spicy notes adding depth to the rum. It's bold, oily and very indulgent. The same flavors return on a long and lingering finish. A very nice bottling that shows a lot of complexity and has a lot going for it for its young age.

Very nice addition to the Habitation Velier series. With a little time to breathe, you get a really good Hampden here with, as expected, powerful fruit esters, some barrel influence, spices and pleasant sweetness. Very good.

Nose is good but in the taste I have a very strange and strong taste of spices that I don't like.

Despite the relative young age this is a spot on fresh and intense release, wow. When looking at the price tag at release you get a lot of vang for your buck. An intense and fruity rum with a fresh and floral profile. ABV really well integrated and overall just and enjoyable rum.
Review by SaibotZtar
Nose... Fruity, acidity ... Ester (no Ester monster as often in DOK but something tamer ) the Tropical storage takes him something the bite makes him but for me more interesting and also rounder ... On the palate initially a great fruity sweetness, alcohol very well integrated ... Ester rather restrained but still clear. For me very exciting and tasty !!!
Review by Dr.Django
Habitation Velier and Hampden are usually convincing. Also in this case. A very tasty DOK with the typical funky high ester aromas of a Hampden. Very fresh, funky, fermented tropical fruit... this rum lacks a little complexity. If you want a DOK, you'll get a DOK here.
Review by Johannes
Very good DOK, which has become somewhat tamer due to tropical storage. But it has everything a good Hampden needs!

Rarely have I looked forward to tasting a bottling so much. The DOK profile we know primarily from the 2009 continental matured. Finally, Habitation Velier has released a tropically matured DOK. Five years of tropical aging and bottled at 60.5%. The DOK DNA is unmistakable and quite similar to the profile we know and many love. It is not quite as brute as the continental DOK and for me, a touch more complex. I must confess that my expectations were exceeded. Now of course follows the test in May Tai.

Edit: after a long time I had it again today with DomM spontaneously in the glass, very cool. Corrected upwards. A very nice DOK, I'm thrilled. Shortly before the finish I taste hazelnut again, I have an association with Nutella bread, only the sweetness is missing. All in all, a very good piece. A super DOK and a great bottling, which I was lucky enough to get hold of again cheaply at the time

I could never bring myself to buy a continental matured DOK - the bottle is never empty anyway. At the HV I have then but spontaneously struck. Just smelling it makes my mouth water - literally in streams. The rum comes with the classic High Ester Hampden profile: grilled, overripe pineapple, solvents going into the cleaning gasoline. All incredibly well integrated, into a surprising ripeness that continental DOKs don't achieve after 10+ years. In the mouth, the same picture and just extremely delicious! The grilled pineapple is joined by smoky curry leaves. The robust acidity is perfectly captured by the wood. The alcohol integration is very good. The finish is intense and long. It doesn't bring out a new facet, but no one asked for that either. As ordered, the DOK is very intense and surprisingly round. It is not particularly multi-faceted, but that is not to be expected with age and mark.Whether this bottle will be empty? Time will tell. My blind purchase I do not regret in any case.

I'm not sure I'd have bet on a blind DOK mark with this bottle. This is a fruity, acidic Hampden, with the usual esters, but they don't carry the day. You can tell this rum is rather young. A little too lively for my palate, but a very pretty bottle. Aeration gives it a superb profile.

Blind DOK Tasting - 1st place. Winner Winner Glue Dinner 🫨🤤 The best Hampden DOK in my opinion. Very wild, rough, delicious, komplex from start to the finish. The tropical aging has clearly a good impact on this one.
Review by Jarek
Very tasty DOK. So far I knew only continental aged DOKs. This one is a little less intrusive, but more complex than those tasted so far.
Review by Thunderbird
A wonderful ester-heavy young DOK! A very good bottling of Velier... the tropical maturation has done him very well! Top!
Review by Aussierumfan
Goodness me, this is some pretty hectic juice! A massive nose on it, I could almost 'feel' the smell of this one! A fruit bomb with a lot of esters. Im getting glue, varnish, small amount of oak and some sweetness. Quite spicy as well. I see some call it a tamed down dok.... so it would be interesting to taste a full feral one! Havnt done that yet.
Review by Tschusikowsky
Guter Hampden.
Review by Righrum
A very nice expression of Hampden, but given that you let the bottle breath for a pretty long time. Esters, chemical traits and polish, plus a bit of overripe fruits. The finish in incredibly long, one of the longest ever

Ein echtes Brett. Ein wunderbar tropisch gereifter DOK. Ein Rum, wie man ihn sich wünscht. Unglaublich intensive Nase nach allem was man an Hampden liebt.
Review by Frank
After a Low Ester now a High Ester. Also quite young, also with high ABV. Nose: even talking the esters are quite in front. Intense, is just a DOK. But not brute, rather fine. Only a Hampden can be like this ☺️. Solvent and fine glue, vinegar and then the typical sweet and sour pineapple accompanied by overzealous, sweet and floury banana. Plus yellow lemon and honey with a hint of marzipan. Totally like it. 8.8Palate: quite straightforward, young DOK. Totally intense esters, liquid marzipan, glue and solvent but also nice sweet and sour with ripe pineapple. Not much more to say about this beautiful drop. If you like DOK, you'll definitely like this one too. 8,6
Review by Basti

This hampden is really a bomb..in every sense of the word!Intense, direct and an explosion of aromas!Lots of ripe fruit, a nice toasty note on the palate and throughout its tasting is joined by a very pleasant fresh vegetable part!Promoted!
Review by Sebastian.W
Enjoying the last drops of this bottle and boy am I gonna mis this one... DOK can get be quite aggresive, but the tropical aging made this one very drinkable. I mainly get an array of fruits, solvents, bubble gum and olives. The vinegar/brine notes are present, but are balanced out by the tropical aging.
Review by ilRummista
Review by Tim
Extremely pineapple on the nose, mouth and finish. Unfortunately too one-sided on the ester grenade, influences of storage should have been more present. The higher the ester content, the lower the variety of ester molecules, which is clearly recognizable in this DOK. That's why my opinion is divided...and I have to deduct a few points.
Review by Timo Groeger
Another nice Hampden, I particularly like the DOK's ;-) Lots of esters and tropical fruits like pineapple on the nose. On the palate also tropical fruits like pineapple and banana, lots of esters, but also glue and solvent. Delicious.
Review by Alex1981
A great distillate, a high ester mark and 5 years of tropical aging - that’s all that it needs to get a great rum. Fruits, power, esters, this has it all. Hampden working its magic. //edit: yummy, same fesult on a re-tasting :)
Review by Rare Akuma
Nosing opens with plantains and honeydew melon, a fruity sweetness intermingled with sour pineapple juice and lemon peels. The sweet-and-sour balance is definitely tipped in favour of sweet, further encouraged by molasses, banana fruitcake and accompanying baking spices. Tropical aging has seemingly rounded off the flavours even more, making this experience very approachable. However the glue stick, nail polish remover and jasmine tea notes are looming. On the palate the individual parts have merged together in one well-functioning whole that quickly develops in the mouth. It’s docile, yet by no means predictable or boring. It starts with yellow banana and plantains, pineapple chunks, mixed berries and applejuice. Rich and greedy, with lots of fructose and confections. The tropical aging has sanded off all the edges and the wood has integrated all the flavours nicely, seasoned them plenty with vanilla, juniper and smoked barbecue spices. At the back of the palate it gets oily-sweet with curaçao, glue gun, jasmine tea and meadow notes. Ends medium long, and very dry. Barbecue-glazed pineapple, green tea and remnant of glue gun. Despite the age, this was incredibly well balanced. The price for value at release is quite high.

Review by Serge
Review by Chrischi78
Strong, young Hampden from the Habitation series with an intense fruit nose, glue, varnish, some wood and spice. Tropically mature, wild but accessible - makes you want an even older bottling.....

Super DOK. Hat irgendwie so eine seifige süßliche Note. Denke könnte Kiwi sein. Gutes PLV für die Qualität.
Review by Sebastian Kornett
It gets tastier from sip to sip.
Review by Mentalo
Review by Maxime Clr 🇫🇷
Review by Fasen
This rum is a well of aromas... It feels unreal in its concentration, with exotic notes (Pineapple / Mango / Banana / Passion fruit), strawberry milk, a hint of freshness (Lemon / Ginger / Clove / Nutmeg / Menthol), spices (Cinnamon / Vanilla / Licorice), all lightly oaky (Toasted / Cardboard / Coffee) with a little indulgence (Caramel / Brioche / Brown sugar). What I really like are these empyreumatic notes (Rubber / Copper / Brine / Plastic / Fermented / Glue / Acetic), the esters are out and it's very good, well balanced but with a beautiful power!
Review by Pavel Spacek
... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that produces rum as well as alcohol for perfume. In all the rums from this distillery you will taste wild esters, after which your whole organism will soak up the smell of golden tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the "must try before you die" rums
Review by Jean Louisss
For an aged DOK, I find this hampden very fresh and intense. The aromatic palette is simply astonishing, as usual with DOKs. A real treat for all lovers of tasting rums.
Review by Buddudharma
Review by Long John Silver
To have 5yo is really interesting, very fruity and citric. Accompanying perfectly are the classic funky notes, which well help and entice the sip. Really nothing to complain about, fresh and good.
Review by Nils123
Typical DOK: Extremely ester-heavy but also correspondingly fruity. The alcohol is very well integrated. For me, the finish scores the highest with an extremely long aftertaste. Adding water makes it a bit smoother.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Incredible ester combined with young wood, lots of vinegar and acid and tropical fermented fruit. I like DOK but here the short barrel aging brings very unpleasant vinegar notes that I do not like at all....
Review by Benoit Mahe

Wowwwww what a bomb 🤩🤩🤩 Yes it's young but it packs a punch. This is really gorgeous 😍 and what a great length!!! Very beautiful integration of alcohol, level aromatic one is served, in short to have or to taste absolutely 👍
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
Very nice version of the DOK, a bit camphorated, quite fat and creamy, a bit of bitterness and smoke, but it is quite pleasant!
Review by raphael galak
As a lover of Dok, this one being younger than usual, I wanted to try it out. I'm not disappointed! It's very full of ester, with cooked banana and candied pineapple. The integration of the alcohol is really quite correct, it's even quite round! Varnish-like solvent with a hint of phenol. A framework of very ripe mango and maracudja, giving nice depth, with hints of molasses sugar. Really nice and interesting!
Review by Gil Firth
Crazy rum. Somehow the DOK profile is not the craziest I have had. But very solid and crazy rum to try. Very pricey... Dont need to buy. Just taste.

A typical Hampden rum, very fruity, empyreumatic and expressive because of its concentrated esters. The finish is elegant and fresh.
