Velier Hampden Rare Cask Series DOK 2010
The surprise here: this is DOK, Hampden's highest-ester mark, yet 12 years of tropical aging has rounded off the sharpest edges. Expect pineapple, overripe tropical fruit and buttery cake alongside the solvent-and-glue funk, with the cask adding vanilla and a soft woody frame. Several tasters call it the best of the Rare Cask series; a few note it feels tamer than a young DOK "should."
The community says- Intense tropical fruit
- Well-balanced funk
- But: Tamer than young DOK

How does Velier Hampden Rare Cask Series DOK 2010 taste?
Aggregated from 41 community reviews.
Rounded, fruity high-ester DOK at cask strength Widely loved as the roundest, most balanced DOK — intense fruit and funk softened by long tropical aging. A few expected more raw DOK punch and found it gentler than hoped.

This is a wonderful release and the flavours just ooze out from pouring it into the glass. I found that the longer this rum rests the more flavours are released. Very fruity and intense. The empty glass changes flavours as it stands and its amazing just how much it changes.

... Hampden, a legendary Jamaican distiller that produces rum as well as alcohol for perfume. In all the rums from this distillery you will taste wild esters that will make your whole body soak up the smell of golden tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the "must try before you die" rums

For me clearly the best out of the rare casks. Very intense and complex. Tropical aging nicely cut off the harsher edges from the DOK. Yet the DOK DNA is clearly there. Funky with chemical notes on the nosebleeds a tone of tropical fruits. Clearly some vanilla / notes from the cask as well creating a intense but round(-ish) profile. Excellent. On the palate a similar feel. The wood works excellent with the power and intense funk of the DOK. This is delivers a delicious mix of fruits. In terms of aging in the cask, this has been bottled at a very nice point in time. The balance between raw DOK notes and moderating influence of the cask is hitting home perfectly. We are looking at a dark profile with tropical fruits, wood and spices in the palate - very enjoyable.

What a device... extremely balanced for a DOK which of course reflects the tropical maturation ... Fruity and heavy it comes along . Slightly woody but all great balanced. Hammer him tasted to have been able. PLV unfortunately does not fit for me despite the quality

Contrary to what it suggests, this Hampden DOK is much more subtle and thin, at the expense of the aromas. The nose is typically funky (ripe exotic fruits and phenolic notes) but is surprisingly flat and shy. On the palate, the whole thing is soft and subtle, and again, with no real surprise or flavor that would distinguish it from another Hampden. Tropical fruit, esters, solvents, varnish, wood, spice and floral notes are recognizable. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is very tannic and carries the same fruity and phenolic notes. A balanced and mastered Hampden in itself, but it doesn't have the little extra to make the difference, except that it is extremely expensive.

Tasted at the Pueblo del Ron Nuremberg 2024. Getting the last drops out of the bottle, so to speak, adding this delicious drop to the bottlekill. Thanks to the Kirsch guys who even gave me the last drops as a gift. I would have expected a little more. Not bad but the price for a bottle would be too high for me.

So, finally the Rarecask DOK in a glass. My expectations were very high...especially for the price! They weren't quite fulfilled... all the classic markers are there, but the 12 years have left their mark on the wood and the maturity, it seems somewhat tamed, the cask is clearly perceptible and the power of the Mark DOK is already quite clearly reduced! Certainly, still an excellent rum, but I was expecting more

The 12 years of tropical aging make this DOK a real sipper.

Very intense Hampden. One of the strongest esters I've ever had. More is almost impossible

That's how Hampden makes sense! Extremely high standard, even if it could be a little fruitier for me.

An absolute cracker for me. Delicious. Fruity. Creamy. Overripe. Deliciously tropical and woody. Intense. Madness!

The nose is already extremely cool. Due to the long tropical maturation, however, the typical DOK markers are barely perceptible. Overall rather round with predominantly trop. Fruits and spices. Not what you would expect from a DOK, but still a very tasty bottling!

A DOK that was allowed to mature for a long time in the tropics is second to none. For me the best DOK
Review by Lukas Jäger
Brutally good DOK. Power and strength, 12 years of tropical deeds do the stuff very well. Perhaps the best of the Rare Cask series, even if the price is still not justified
Review by Neal Lin
Intense and yet well balanced mixture over tropical fruit & buttered cake. Totally feel the trace of long tropical maturation, but the body is not overwhelmed by woody elements. Nice & intensive treasure.
Review by Fiete Heinrich
Apple cider vinegar, intense, fleshy, alcohol very well integrated, slightly astringent, light sweetness, fruit cake, soft woody character, finish very pleasantly soft sweetish with some fruit, apricot

Clean and Elegant. Drink feeling is very unexpected in my experience of Jamaica Rum. Taste don't like a 1500-1600 ester marque, but a Japanese whisky (probably hibiki?) at 11 volume: cantaloupe, cream, coconut and sandalwood. The hampden funk in this bottle is weak.
