Santiago de Cuba Extra Añejo 11 Años

Anyone who likes the light, dry Spanish style will feel at home here. Vanilla, honey, coconut and tropical fruit up front, with a bit of oak and spice underneath. At 40% it's soft and easy, though several tasters wished for more depth from an 11-year rum. Where it really shines, by more than one account, is in a daiquiri.

Light Cuban that mixes better than it sips Well-liked Cuban in the light Spanish style, and a genuinely good daiquiri base. The common gripe: thin body and a short finish that don't quite match the age statement.

Bought and finished a bottle of this Cuban rum in Nerja at the Costa del Sol. It’s a molasses based rum produced from sugar cane grown in the southeast of Cuba. After fermentation and distillation it’s charcoal filtered before aged in white oak barrels. The nose is complex, balanced, fruity, spicy, woody and nutty with scents of apple, orange, tangerine, fennel, almonds, pistachio, tobacco and leather. At the palate it’s warm, complex, balanced, sweet, fruity, woody, spicy, smoky, nutty and dry especially in the end with flavors of toffee, caramel, dark chocolate, orange, raisins, coconut, oak, vanilla, tobacco, leather, coffee and almonds. The finish is rather long for this quite low ABV.

This made a fantastic Daiquiri! The balance was spot on, the burnt sugar and tropical fruits were present with a bit of oak on the finish, one of the best I've made. I enjoy both aged and Spanish style Rums in my Daiquiris so I'm glad this one delivered! I'm sad that I can't try the older version as I've heard very good things about that. It was also quite good neat, but I expected a bit more complexity from a Rum this age. I think I'll continue to use this bottle for mixing.

This rum is not mine, simply too sweet. This sweetness is also on the nose, as well as vanilla and chocolate for me. For me, it continues on the palate and the chocolate becomes milk chocolate. But simply too sweet.

The nose is greeted by a pleasant vanilla/chocolate aroma. On the palate, it is less sweet than the nose would suggest, but instead spicy and tropical fruit. A proper Cuban in the Spanish style.

Enjoyable Cuban that is very different from the aged Havana Club expressions that have been my main Cuban experiences so far. This clearly has a much higher content of aguardiente, the aromatic cane eau-de-vie that has proud traditions in Cuba and is making a bit of a comeback. For that reason this rum is far more reminiscent of the recent Eminente cuban rum although definitely not as extreme as the 70% aguardiente that was in that one. It’s agreeable and quite dry, dissipation from the palate is a little quick but not quite as bad as most low-medium priced venezuelans. Can’t wait to put it to use in some cocktails and see how it does. At 40€ a pretty decent purchase when in the market for a Spanish style rum.

A round and subtle nose. There's tropical fruit, coconut and a heather, lavender note. Something a little reminiscent of scotch. The palate has some sweetness but it's not overwhelming. Raisin, almonds and a big hit of green apples. Medium length finish. Honey and the green apple from the palate lingers. Overall not bad at all. Won't blow away the connoisseur, but on a hot day it's easy drinking.

I don't tend to add ice to my rum (personal preference only). I was a little surprised to see that the neat option for this rum wasn't seen as the starting point though! Sure this works great in things like an Old Fashioned but I think its best enjoyed on...
