Saint James Royal Ambré

6.8/10 64 community reviews ↓

Don't buy this one to sip — most people who tried it neat found the alcohol loud and the mouth harsh, with acetone and glue on the nose over young oak and a touch of vanilla. Where it wins is behind the bar: this Saint James agricole is a workhorse for Ti-Punch, Mai Tai, fruit macerations and even cooking. Green, grassy and a bit rough on its own.

How does Saint James Royal Ambré taste?

Aggregated from 64 community reviews.

Rough neat, reliable Ti-Punch mixer Split verdict: as a neat pour many call it aggressive and overly alcoholic, but it earns real love as a Ti-Punch and cocktail base. A mixing bottle, not a sipping one.

Perfect for

Cocktail makers who want an everyday Ti-Punch and Mai Tai base

Less suitable for

Anyone hoping to sip it neat

Very present alcohol, in the nose as well as in the mouth. Used before for mai-tai but I find that the quality decreases (or it's me who is more demanding).

Really not my kind of rhum. The nose is aggressive and vegetal, the mouth worse - harsh, unbalanced and overly alcoholic. The only redeeming factor is the finish which mellows into a more typical sweet Agricole finish. I see no reason why I would drink this again as many better Agricole options

Well, it was worth a try. It's just mass-produced. Sharp-edged, alcohol strongly noticeable, unround, woody roasted taste.

I use it for pancakes to add flavor, but otherwise it's atrocious to drink neat.

Expert review by The Fat Rum Pirate

You won't break the bank in doing so. It's a versatile and useful Rhum Agricole. It will probably appeal most to cocktail enthusiasts. I would imagine it is a good rhum to have to hand for a bartender. As it is so versatile. It's a solid sipper/premium mixer that will...
