Mount Gay Black Barrel
Poured neat it reads dry and woody, with vanilla, caramel and toasted oak from the bourbon-cask aging, plus a little orange and a spicy, slightly alcoholic edge. Several members find it thin and one-dimensional on the palate, but it comes alive in a rum and coke. A few whisky drinkers use it as their crossover bottle.
The community says- Vanilla and toasted oak
- Great in cola
- But: Thin palate

All my Tastings and Scores are purely based on “Rums under £50”. I rarely look at Rums over £50 for my YouTube.

Solo strong alcohol perceptible. A rum that tastes more like whiskey than rum. I don't like whiskey, but it goes well with an old fashioned drink. Use translate 😅
Review by Joachim Guger
The nose is very good for a starter rum. Oak, tobacco, fruit and then polish. Very well balanced. In the mouth then disappointment. Woody, one dimensional and thin. The alcohol stings. As I said, a good introduction to unsweetened rum.
Review by abaker-rum
This rum has a fruity nose that mixes in well with caramel and vanilla notes. There is a bit of Congac on the nose that shines through even more in the back end of the palate. A good mix of classic molasses rum flavors with a couple unique elements.
Review by DosenZorn
Good Mount Gay, where you can clearly taste the aging in bourbon barrels. Not as complex as the big brother XO, but still definitely one of the better rums.
Review by Gregor
In the smell very nice. Very strongly reminiscent of Spanish style. Then, unfortunately, thin on the palate. Hardly any complexity. Only light caramel vanilla tones with strong wood
Review by Lutz Lungershausen
After years, I remember that I didn't like it as much back then as I do today. Strong vanilla, initial roasted aromas and some fruit on the nose. On the palate, there are distinctive roasted and flamed wood aromas. Not usually my cup of tea, but very harmonious here. For sipping and mixing. . 04.2024 I find my previous impression confirmed. However, I wouldn't buy it again today.

Not too sweet and not too dry, very good balance. A real rum
Review by rum_sk
Revisiting after several years (5+) and it is a trip to the past. Very distinctive & characteristic sweet, fruity 👃. Still great on the 👅, still 🍌 and I mean a proper ripe banana. Green apple, dark chocolate, vanilla with touch of 🥥 & caramel, subtle earthy notes with hint of tobacco & charred barrel. Great neat sipping rum. Medium long finish. I am realizing that I did not appreciate this rum enough back then.
Review by TheJackDrop

Review by pavlix vipax

Sweetish, spicy aroma. Taste: Very mild at the beginning, followed by a good spiciness that leads to a good strength

Good in this price category

Not as developed as I was hoping for, you really need to struggle to get anything beside the smoky and peppery flavors. There is something funky on the nose I can best describe as sweaty gym clothes.

Review by Mark Leggett
A step up from the Eclipse. A little sweeter and better flavor overall.
Review by Daniel
Review by Mathieu Visiere
Roasted taste really nice final, long tasting and sweet. Better than the eclipse one and well balanced for that price range.
Review by Abrahan Reyes
Pretty good for the price. The nose feels like a good Bourbon, delicate and fruity aroma, and some vanilla. The tasting is a little bit alcoholic but not overpowering, with some vanilla and caramel. Add a touch of water and this is where it shines, bringing some banana flavor.

Some fire pit, vanilla. Maybe apricot, but light. Pale golden pour. A little caramel. A little notion of dish detergent that i started to pick up later. Had in a flight at Cuba Libre.
