Silver Seal Demerara Rum Wildlife Series No. 1 1974

If you love peated Islay whisky, this 1974 Guyana from Silver Seal will feel like home. Think leather, charcoal, mocha, dried prunes and a heavy smoke that one taster called a "love it or hate it" rum. The 28 years and 68.5% make it dense and concentrated. That smoke splits the room hard — several found it far too dominant to enjoy.

The community says
  • Concentrated leather-tobacco nose
  • Deep mocha & prunes
  • Full-bodied old Demerara

How does Silver Seal Demerara Rum Wildlife Series No. 1 1974 taste?

Heavy, smoky Demerara that splits drinkers Genuinely divisive. Fans call it a masterpiece of leather, tar and mocha; others find the whisky-like smoke and bitterness too much. Nearly everyone agrees the nose is stunning — palate is where opinions break.

Perfect for

Would be apart from the smoke note probably a rather decent representative of the 70s Demeraras from long continental storage. Unfortunately, the smoke note is so dominant that it must inevitably divide the minds. For me, clearly too present and more interesting as an experiment than for enjoyment.

Heavy and dark Guyana flavors, wood, licorice with a toch of maggi. An intoxicating perfume. A touch of bitterness. No astringency. Perfect balance. Perfect rum to celebrate our engagement. What a moment in life 😍 @Dr.Django thanks for the tasting opportunity 💍❤️🥃 31/10/24: Some tobacco and rubber (in the best way) menthol associations in the finish.

A wonderful rum and I'm happy to have a backup bottle on my shelf. Wonderfully balanced and full bodied, if you get the chance give it a go.

Amazing nose with a perfect balance between round and bitter notes. Unfortunately, palate is way more bitterish and feels a bit unbalanced. A pitty for such legendary rum. Not a bad one though and I'm still very happy I tasted such legend.

A very special drop. For the first 15 minutes, the glass smelled totally of beef fillet in cream sauce and notes of sumac. The rum (logically) needed time to open up. The smell of dairy products remained. But tobacco, vanilla, dark chocolate and cask were added, paired with a heavy sweetness. On the palate, vanilla, plastic, burnt, peat, earthy sweetness, mocha, leather, smoke. It reminds me of those little sugar Easter eggs. Finish: sweet, tobacco, plastic, green, spice, dried fruit, bitter Special profile. It tastes old and good. But I don't think it's quite top league.

The 65% Version is more fruity and less woody as the 68,5% Release. Both are very nice but I have the 65% slightly ahead.
