The Whisky Jury South Pacific SPD 2001
Banana, varnish and a whiff of rubber up front, then yellow tropical fruit, dried apricot and a dry, slightly smoky-medicinal tail. This is the classic Fiji 2001 profile: ester-driven, fruity, a little "Caroni dirtiness" as one taster put it. Several members called it well-balanced but a touch restrained — very good, just not the most exciting of the vintage.

RumX Community Tasting Fiji 2001. A nose with varnish, yellow fruit and in particular apple, vegetal and like old hemp rope. On the palate, pastry, yellow fruit and hemp rope. Roasted/grilled. The finish is rather short, the aromas disappearing quickly with a not very pleasant acqueous side. Apple and oak remain at the very end. A pleasant rum, not overpowering, but with no flaws or rough edges, making it consistent and easy to drink. For my taste, it's a little boring, too much in the background. Everything is coherent here, nose, finish and empty glass, a real plus for a very well-made rum.

RumX Fidji 2001 Cross Tasting: As opener of the line-up this one was very nice right from the start. Well balanced and reasonably complex representation of the vintage with all you can hope for. In the end this one placed in the middle of the pack. Side-by-side it lacks a bit of punch and excitement compared to others in the line-up. But make no mistake: this is very good in its own right. Cheers to Jakob!

RumX Fiji Crosstasting April 2024 Place 7/8 Still a solid Fiji 2001, which may not keep up with the top 2001s. However, the quality level of all samples is very high. Overall somewhat flat.

Fiji 2001 Community Tasting - big thanks to Jakob for organizing this blind tasting. A great vintage and a comparison not without surprise. For me, the two Artesanal rums, neither of which I drank to the end, brought up the rear. An unpleasant juniper off-note was particularly disturbing (very pronounced in the rx15398, slightly better but still disturbing in the rx7779). Then, for me, the Rum Cask rx479 brought up the rear (i.e. very good / with the right markers), but not as great as the others. Surprisingly, the Isla del Ron, which has had a small reference status in my heart ever since I tried it, ended up in next place for me. But it was overtaken in the blind test by the delicious Whisky Jury (rx13025) and then by the sensational. cave Guildive (rx1717). For me, the Cave Guildive is the winner of the classic Fiji 2002 profile and is really top. I only rated the Flag LMDW Antipodes (rx13440) higher ... this one is clearly woodier but also ultra-tasty. It was also clearly recognizable blind and made the photo finish millimeters behind the Plantation rx11133, which probably also stood out because it was so un-Fiji2001 and has a great glue-caramel Guyana nose. Verdict: Typical Fiji winners are the Cave Guildive on the fruity-honey-feelgood side and the Flag on the woody. the Plantation is the wildcard winner. The two RA bottlings are the two that remain far below the level of the other two.

Thanks to Jakob, I had the pleasure of tasting a wide range of the Fiji 2001 bottlings. Although I've had a few in my glass before, the result surprised me again, as my previous favorite ended up in last place. However, it has to be said that I didn't give most of them time to develop due to a time problem. So here is the result of the blind tasting, which differs from the scoring.

#5316 15.05.2025 Enjoying some samples after coming back from the airport in Hamburg. Put my son on his flight to China for a long holiday with his mom. Listening to some Psy Trance 2025. Nose Intense, light wood, fruits, light rubber, ester, light polish, faint floral, light berries, faint smoke. Palate Light oily, intense, warm, light wood, fruits, ester, light rubber, light floral, faint smoke, light pineapple, faint medicinal. Finish Medium to long, warm, light dry, fruits, light dried fruit, faint medicinal, citrus. Empty glass Light cherry, light medicinal, harbs, faint marzipan.

Un rhum fidjien plutôt atypique par rapport à son Millésime. Le nez est timoré, les fruits secs et les fruits tropicaux mûrs sortent en premier, puis des notes pâtissières succinctes font la transition vers des notes médicinales plus marquées (esters, vernis, pneu). Les épices sont peu marquées, à l’inverse d’un baume floral qui confère un peu de fraîcheur. Un nez étrangement hésitant comparé à d’autres expressions du genre. Le profil est plutôt lourd et sec en bouche, avec de la pâtisserie et du fruit très mûr au début (ananas, banane, mangue) mais qui sont vite stoppés par une sensation d’étouffement au palais. Le profil devient davantage fumé, médicinal, légèrement herbacé et développe une note de cuir, mais paradoxalement devient plus terne en bouche, perdant à la fois en saveurs et en complexité. L’alcool n’est pas si mal intégré mais on perçoit le déséquilibre des arômes, qui peinent à se mouvoir dans la bouche. La finale est de longueur moyenne, sèche, tannique et amère avec le boisé, les fruits secs, les épices chaudes et les notes médicinales et herbacées. Le profil est original mais aussi plus effacé, ce qui est dommage car l’expérience n’est pas aussi intense qu’escomptée. Un bon rhum en l’état, mais pas le meilleur des îles Fidji.

Wow, great selection! Full of esters, fruits, slight spices and a suprising vanilla gentleness. The dry finish stays with you for a long time, producing extra saliva that brings back the esters for a final goodbye. Alcohol is well integrated, what an orchestra of flavors. Top notch!

Beautiful, archetypal 2001 Fiji, which comes along on the rather balanced track. The typical intensity is recognizable, but remains rather restrained overall. A successful release at a high level.

RumX Community Cross-Tasting „Fiji 2001“ (by Jakob): Nase fruchtig und etwas dreckig, mit Lösungsmittel und Gummi. Am Gaumen ergänzt durch Süsse, Kräuter und Würze. Leichte minzige Note. OK, geht aber noch besser.

Whiskyjury. Another quality bottler from Belgium. Banana smell enters the nose only seconds after pouring. Huray. N: lots of tropical/yellow fruits. Balance. Bit of rubber. Very small amount of smoke. Funk. Ester etc. Typical Fijian. T: creamy and dry. Yasmine tea. Again the tropical fruit. Baked banana. Flowery. Something musty. Very very good. Lots of flavours. Great balance. A bit hot. I Don't get the smokiness in the flavour. But I do get a bit of malt/whisky. One of the best Fijis I had.

An der Nase klassische Fiji Marker: Frucht Plastik und etwas Säure. Am Gaumen finde ich vor allem Banane, aber auch leicht schwarzen Tee. Ganz lecker, aber ich hatte auch schon spannendere Fiji im Glas.

This is my first time trying a Fiji 2001 and I'm really enjoying it. The nose is fruity, smoky and full of esters. On the palate I'm getting less fruit and more spicy notes. The finish is dry, bitter and lingers for a while.

Again, a great representative of the genre, for me a touch behind the TRC in terms of intensity and balance. Nevertheless, a great rum, this profile is simply fun.
