MHOBA Select Reserve French Cask Rum (LMDW)
Anyone curious about Mhoba but wary of its wilder bottlings should start here. Distilled from cane juice and two years in Cape red-wine casks, it carries the distillery's signature glue, solvent and ester alongside raisin, sugarcane and light wood. One member called it "tame but I'll take it," an easy entry to the range. The 65% is present but folds in more than expected.

#5287 30.04.2025 Testing some brand new samples that just arrived today. Listening to Goa Trance 2025 on Spotify only makes things better. Nose Fresh, medium intense, light floral, citrus, light caramel, light pineapple, faint cinnamon. Palate Medium intense, light wood, warm, raisin, citrus, light cinnamon, sugarcane, faint earthy, faint chocolate. Finish Long, light wood, light sugarcane, light tobacco, faint chocolate, light citrus. Empty glass Sugarcane, light chocolate, light tobacco, vanilla, light orange.

On the nose, the Mhoba French Cask is relatively similar to the Mhoba 101 Strand for me, the same garlic / truffle oil aroma. The alcohol comes through here with the Mhoba French Cask but a little stronger. On the palate, the alcohol pushes for my taste then already quite and could be better integrated. With some time in the air and some water, however, this becomes more bearable and the French Cask opens up more. Taste-wise, I find the Franchise Cask in direct comparison a tad more refined than the Mhoba 101 Strand. Both, however, have quite similar. The finish is medium long.

When I smelled it, my first thought was that it was some agricole from Martinique...something like Depaz...I smell wood and fruit...like raisins and also something like jam or plum jam... I smell wood and raisins on the palate..and also a bit of alcohol, 60% is admittedly a short warm finish...I have tasted several Mhobas and none have been disappointing..
