Trois Frères Distillery Takamaka Extra Noir (Charred Cask Rum)
Wood lovers and folks stepping up from starter rums are the natural fit here. Expect toasted oak, vanilla and a peppery, dry palate, with a splash of red wine on the nose. It's not sweet and not complex — several tasters found it thin and the charred note a bit sharp. One member called it a "good entry level" rum.

How does Trois Frères Distillery Takamaka Extra Noir (Charred Cask Rum) taste?
Aggregated from 57 community reviews.
Dry, oak-forward everyday sipper, a bit thin Most land around 6-7/10: pleasant woody nose, but the palate reads thin, peppery and heavy on toasted oak. Fine as an easygoing sipper; enthusiasts wanted more depth and a higher ABV.

A visit to the Takamaka distillery is worthwhile! During the pandemic, the distillery has built up a second mainstay alongside its high-quality pot still made from fresh sugar cane juice from the Seychelles in very small quantities with a triple column still that works with molasses from abroad (Mauritius). This enables continuous production in large quantities, serving the cocktail and beginner segment. Extra Noir, however, comes from the middle segment, as it also has pot still components and a somewhat more elaborate storage process than that of the lower segment. However, I find the burnt aromas in the mouth and finish too dominant and sharp. Unfortunately, apart from the Zepis Kreol, there were no other rums from this segment available for tasting.

Very nice surprise

Ziemlich gruselig. Sehr scharfer Alkohol und die verbrannte Holznote im Abgang übertönt den an sich recht leichten Rum total. Nicht zu empfehlen

Shopbesuch Rum Paradise Hamburg April 2025. Das ist der letzte für heute. Ist besser als erwartet. Vanille und junges Holz in der Nase. Am Gaumen haben wir dann Vanille, Holz sowie etwas Rotwein. Solider Abschluß.
Review by Émile Shevek
A really interesting rum, delicate and unique, like the distillery's other productions, it envelops in its chocolate and caramel notes that harmonize with the sweet and fruity ones, with a light finish
Review by Rowald Sweet Empire
Nice and easy going rum. Lots of red wine and fruits in the nose. More light and agricole in the taste. Wood spices. Would like to try this on a higher ABV. Good entry level for a "semi" new rum.
Review by Johannes
Etwas dünn, trotzdem ist der Alkohol präsent, außerdem typische Vanillin-Noten aus einem Eichenfass.

I had a couple of ,,shots,, on my friends wedding and I was surprised how good it is. I only had a chance to taste the one dedicated to drinks but this is whole another level. I cannot remember the exact taste or smell but I liked it a lot it was very well balanced with sweetness. I need to get a bottle to revisit. Retaste: I kind of agree with what I said it is surprisingly good, rather sweet but not over the top rather nicely balanced.

Pleasant nose. But too flat and peppery on the palate.

Getoastetes Holz, leicht pfeffrig und trocken und generell sehr holzbetont. Kaum Komplexität und generell etwas nichtssagend.
