CoR Montebello Guadeloupe No. 1 1998

"A beautiful, fine, elegant rum that just lacks the watts" is how one taster summed it up, and that's the story here. Dry herbs, cedar, citrus and a syrupy peach note run through it, with anise sitting front and centre — some love that green, agricole-leaning profile, others (like the anise-haters) can't get past it. At 43.3% and 23 years old it drinks easy, but even fans wish it hit harder.

CoR tasting, Rum Club Switzerland. Discreet flavors on the nose, dry herbs, citrus, cedar wood and a slightly too sweet peach in syrup. The palate is suave, the aromas are rather weak but balanced, dry herbs, peach in syrup and cedar wood dominate, but there's also bitter cherry, smokiness and a nice bitterness. The finish is rather short, on wood, fruit and bitterness. A fine, elegant rum, even if it lacks the watts needed for full expression. Great drinkability and a favorite. Tasted again and the watts are still sorely lacking.

05.12.2024 CoR online tasting. Retasting. --------------------------- Spamming with a few older tastings that I haven't added yet. Pretty good release but I would have loved a higher ABV. Overall balance is OK but expected more from a release this old.

Beautiful complexity with wood, spices and green notes. Great Agricole profile, which also looks good with its reduced strength. An appealing Guadeloupe representative on the more herbal side, you have to like the somewhat unusual profile, anyone who has a thing for Agricole should have tried the release.

Since I don't like aniseed and this bottling seems to have a lot of it, I can't do anything with it.

I was curious to check off Montebello, but I’m not sure what to make of it. It feels underpowered and not particularly flavoursome.

05-12-2024 Colours of Rum Tasting Montebello is just not for me. The weakest rum in the lineup. To low ABV and a lot of cumin in the taste.

Avg Rating 8.4/10 over 1,600 Rums

Guyana is the last home of the wooden still, and the only rum country where the place on the label is almost never the place the rum was made. Its rum, called Demerara after the river, went from 109 distilleries to one, and the estates that closed live on as marks: codes for a recipe, not for a machine. Reading them is the whole skill.
