Nobilis Romero & Sons Ecuador No. 19 2005

"A Spaniard with a punch," as one member puts it — and the 69% is the whole story here. Chocolate, hazelnut, caramel and a metallic edge, with apricot and lime peel poking through once you give it air. Neat it bites, spicy and a touch bitter; a few drops of water round it out and let the fruit show. A rare cask-strength Ecuador that rewards patience more than it dazzles.

8,2:On the nose, the first impression we get is very woody, roasted and a bit metallic, as the wood is nutty with a walnut, peppery, roasted with burnt sugar, caramel. Slowly dried fruits crawl out, like raisins. On aeration, the rum opens, becomes round, balanced with fruits like apples, apricots, citrus and molasses, minty, a bit floral with tobacco. The roastedness brings also hazelnut and some chocolate. 7,7:On the palate, the attack is extremely spicy with a pepper and quite alcoholic, bitter. It certainly needs to settle down, when it happens, we get some roasted notes like hazelnuts, chocolate, caramel, burnt sugar and pleasant fruits, that lessen alcoholic feeling with lime and apricot. After some rest, wood brings vanilla, nougat and molasses some tobacco. 8:The finish is actually pleasant, rounder with less spicy wood, dry, later tannic and nicely fruity with raisins, green apple, lime, herbaceous molasses, tobacco, as woody notes from the palate remain here also, a bit more toasted...

On the nose you immediately recognize the Spanish style: metallic, fresh, fruity, almost floral. On fruit apricot with green apple and lime zest. In addition, a slight note of caramel. Reminds me a bit of white wine. With time it gets a slightly smoky undertone of vanilla pipe tobacco. Out the back also still slightly vinegar. The high alcohol bites a bit at first.Palate: initially astringent and slightly bitter to peppery, which may also be due to the 69%, then goes into the metallic fruity. Again there is apricot with lime zest. It also seems woody with a tart nuttiness similar to hazelnut and becomes increasingly chocolaty. Out the back it has light tobacco. Remains metallic and becomes a bit more herbal. The high ABV makes it a bit more interesting.

A Spaniard with Wumms! Although he can not hide his Spanish roots, this rum fascinates me a bit. Although now no taste mega-highlight, he brings intense flavor. Surely its 69% contribute their part, but these are quite suitable and tameable after some time in the glass. Especially on the palate, dark flavors of nut and chocolate and, interestingly, a hint of lime show up. In conjunction with the Spanish basic character an exciting mixture. I would rather not buy a bottle, but once again something different in glass, I like!

reminds me of other high-end Spanish like the Tres Hombres Captain's Choice Ed 15 (Dom.Rep.). On the nose nutty-sweet (Nutella), floral, cherry wood. The high ABV brings that certain sweetness to the palate as well, but at the same time the alcoholic spiciness is very present. Interesting rum, but my favorite he will probably rather not...

A pretty good release in my mind. Not super fruity but I like the nutty part and the roasted wood. Lightly dry on the palate but also warm and nice. Well balanced overall profile and the price tag is pretty OK.

Alcohol unfortunately not particularly well integrated, quite sharp and metallic. Overall, quite a nice basic Spanish profile, but for this price there must definitely be more on offer. A few drops of water open up the rum considerably and reveal beautiful notes of green apple, apricot, lime zest, caramel and black pepper. Now it starts to be a bit more fun. With the background that it is almost the only cask strength Ecuador rum, it is a solid drop but far from a "must have".

Sehr lecker.

Aged rum

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 16,000 Rums

Aged rum is where the spirit earns its complexity. In a tropical warehouse a barrel loses 6 to 10 percent of its contents to evaporation every year, which is why an 8-year Caribbean rum can taste deeper than a 20-year Scotch. This page gathers every rum on RumX that has spent real time in wood, with community ratings to separate the genuinely mature from the merely dark.
