Hampden S.B.S Jamaica <>H 2013

"All the funk" is how one taster sums it up: fermented pineapple, nail polish and glue on the nose, then roasted, salty tropical fruit and vanilla on the palate. This 8-year Hampden <>H lands hot and heavy at 68.3%, and most agree it needs real air time before the alcohol settles in. Wild, expressive, unmistakably Hampden.

The community says
  • Intense tropical fruit
  • Big ester funk
  • But: Alcohol not integrated

Aggregated from 79 community reviews.

Hot, funky pineapple-and-glue Hampden A classic high-ester Hampden most tasters really enjoy — pineapple, glue and roasted spice. The recurring gripe: at 68.3% the alcohol isn't perfectly integrated, and it turns dry and astringent.

--- English: Hampden from the 1423 World Class Spirits collection is an exceptional Jamaican rum that captivates with its intense flavor and complex aromatic profile. The nose reveals tropical fruits with notes of esters, vanilla, and a hint of saltiness. Subtle woody elements and a slight adhesive aroma evoke the traditional Jamaican "funky" style. The palate is rich and intense, emphasizing tropical fruits and roasted tones. Sweet vanilla notes intertwine with spiciness and woody elements, completing a complex flavor profile. The overall impression of this rum is balanced yet full of distinctive characteristics typical of Jamaican rums.

Tasted together with Colours of Rum Jamaica 2013 RX17342 The nose is very similar and a touch fruitier. On the palate, the alcohol does not seem as well integrated as in the CoR. The two differ on the palate: While the CoR remains sweet for quite a long time before it veers towards salty and olive, the S.B.S does this more quickly and therefore seems more bitter to me. Otherwise, the two are very similar. It's really difficult to detect differences in the aftertaste of these rums! I wouldn't be able to tell them apart blindly in this respect. All in all, I like the CoR two hairs breadths better because of its more pronounced sweetness and better integrated alcohol.

The legs are very thin and slowly descend along the wall, this announces fire! Typical nose on the basket of tropical fruits well advanced and the glue. After aeration vanilla and caramel then chocolate come to add to the greediness, we would easily forget the 68,3°! In mouth, the attack is warm on spices (nutmeg type), the banana more than well ripe. Then come the caramel and the licorice. It also has a sour side which turns then on a very light bitterness. The finish is rather spicy and very long, it turns on a very pleasant mentholated side.maybe 4 or 5 degrees less to be perfect-> the H is the top❤️

C: Light Gold N: You should know that a CH Hampden was my first pot still rum, and it was love at the first sight. I went from Foursquare and sugared rums to 1300-1400 gr/hL AA in a blink. It was tuff, I admit that, but I’ve never looked back since. Anyways, typical Hampden with pineapples, nail polish remover and touches of vinegar. I would even suggest that this was more continental aged rather than tropical. It has the kind of intense lightness I like. M: The rum wants to eat your tongue. So sweet and fresh despite the intense aromas. That should tell you that this rum does not want to hurt you but loves you. In your face and wild, the way I like it. F: Who cares! B: Yes. I think I prefer this to the 5y HV 2016, 62%. I don’t know really; it´s just by memory I’m saying this.

I would agree with the description / highlights- tropical explosion with spicy long finish. The color is golden, honey yellow. The nose is funky- nail polish and glue, later with tones of ripen tropical fruits (bananas and mangoes) The taste is Hampden - it reminds me Great Houses..fruits and honey with funky tones of solvents and esters.. The finish is long and warm and spicy and dry…
