Velier Foursquare Triptych
Most tasters land in the same place: a very good Foursquare, just an unusually woody one. The triple-cask trick — Madeira and virgin oak in the mix — pushes toasted coconut, vanilla and milk chocolate forward, but that virgin oak takes over for a lot of people, drying out the finish and burying the red-fruit Madeira note. At 56% the alcohol sits well integrated. Balanced and warm rather than complex.

Woody, balanced Foursquare with a dry finish A very good Foursquare that most owners rate highly — balanced, warm, chocolate-and-oak driven. Several wish the virgin oak backed off, and a few find it woody to a fault.

Review by TheRhumhoe
A very opulent Foursquare on the nose, with lovely woody and spicy notes that go well with fruit (coconut, tropical fruit, dried fruit such as grapes). The Bajan-style sweetness is balanced by slightly empyreumatic notes. The attack on the palate is very elegant, with a nice smoky, spicy touch that fires up the palate. The wood and spice are quite lively, at least enough to counterbalance the hot caramel and brown sugar. Fruits, milk chocolate and leather also come together nicely. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is a little less pronounced, drier, bitter and tannic. Wood, smoke, baked caramel and cocoa give a fairly dark profile on the finish. This is followed by more fruity, balanced notes. A lovely Foursquare that stands out with powerful empyreumatic aromas, which change the overall profile.

Velier FS (+ a fee spected other contenders) blind cross tasting: Honestly, the results here were very close. The Belier bottlings display a very high quality thourgout the range. Triptych and Pleni came out on top for me closely followed by Destino. I was somewhat surprised, that Sassafras and 2006 came out rather at the bottom, while I enjoyed both very much on their own. Raconteur also quite low in the ranking with Principia clearly at the bottom.

Not a particularly exciting Foursquare. Very woody and one-dimensional.
Review by Serge
Good Foursquare. But while for some it is the best of the non-Destino Veliers, for me it lags somewhat behind the Pleni (which I have in my glass at the same time). Nevertheless, it's great and one of the better ones.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Solid foursquare and a nice red fruit note from the ex Madeira cask, plus milk chocolate, but overall relatively little of the typical coconut banana note and more roasted nuts, herbs, forest honey and pine needles. The virgin oak is a little too dominant for me personally! Delicious but not outstanding.
Review by Leo Krüper
Very good, but due to the proportion of the blend from the Virgin Oak, this rum needs a lot of time in the glass to put down the pungent smell. Once it unfolds, you have a nice semi-complex Foursquare.
Review by Tom Buteneers
For me the best Foursquare I’ve tasted so far. Maybe because it has a less then typical Foursquare flavor profile. 6/10/24: Remains a very good 4SQ

8,7:On the nose, toasted coconut, roasted wood notes, oaky, with leather, cocoa, butterscotch, slightly smoky, spicy with baking spices, polish, dried fruits like raisins and apricots, tropical fruits, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, roasted nuts and milk chocolate arise, vanilla, citrus fruits, metallic patina and flowery molasses. 8,9:On the palate, the attack is bitter-sweet-salty, balanced, with roasted wood notes like butterscotch, roasted nuts, leather, milk chocolate, later brown sugar, spicy with vanilla, fruits like coconut, dried apricots, raisins and yellow fruits, on oxidation mango and orange peel join, as the molasses is slightly herbaceous. 9:The finish is the best, long, dry and slightly tannic, oaky, spicy, as the roastedness brings dark notes, slightly smoky, the molasses counterbalances with lighter tones, grassy and flowery with rose, while the fruits are dried with prunes, apricots, as the coconut is toasted. Edit:7.2.26

The Swell and the Barbados 2006 Flag Series have been added to the big crosstasting of the Velier bottlings. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to get a sample of the 70th. In general, it can be said that there were no major differences on the nose when flying blind. However, there are recognizable differences in the taste itself. In my opinion, however, three clearly stand out and bring up the rear.

Very good foursquare! The alcohol is integrated sooo well, but the oak tastes are everywhere and have an high impact! Not much left of the impact of the madeira barrel.

Rankings of 6 Velier Foursquare from cross-tasting (sans 2006 & Destinos) 1. Pleni [Excellent deep foursquare profile that sets itself apart from the pack with a delectable tobacco note and a long pleasant finish] 2. Patrimonio [I love it. The most clearly Sherry-marked of them all and it’s just an ideal complex sipper. The finish cuts out slightly too early to make it top boy] 3. Triptych [intense, flavorful, and very solid but the profile is a little too molasses syrupy for my taste] 4. Raconteur [very good but just lacks a little bit of personality compared to the ones above. The finish is also noticeably shorter compared to the top 3.] 5. Sassa [great jumping attack out the gate but the slightly astringent aftertaste drags it down] 6. Principia [too sharp, alcohol less well integrated, still a more than fine rum of course] Kudos to Leo Tomczak for samplers

Exciting tasting. And also very tasty overall, although for me not quite as tasty as the reputation of the Foursquare/Velier bottlings might be. With the Triptych, the wood influence was far too dominant for me. Positive memories of children's chocolate came through. With the Patrimonio, associations on the nose with Indian korma and watermelon. But sharp-edged and dry. I found Principa very cool at first. Beautiful fruit components and yet FS DNA. But the alcohol is too biting on the finish. I like Sassafras very much. Plenipotenzario stands out for me with its complexity. Very cool. But the clear high-flyer is Destino. Fruity, harmonious, complex and very tasty! From my memory, it's also a tick better than the 2006, but I doubt whether it's worth the money you have to spend today.

Review by DutchRumPirate
What a delicious Foursquare! It's a bit softer, a bit sweeter, and therefore less spicy than the Plenipotenziario. Personally, I prefer the softer profile. It feels wonderfully full in the mouth. Wonderful quality.
Review by tojo
Beautiful, but also not very complex Foursquare. Smell and taste are close together. Dried fruit, spices. Finish with toasted notes. Alcohol well integrated, very drinkable.

This is a very nice Barbadian rum finished in Italy. This is a nice blend of three vintages.
Review by mto75
Review by Benoit Mahe
A complex nose, a sweet, fruity palate and a long, dry, spicy finish. A successful Foursquare.

Velier and Foursquare should do the trick. I think this rum did sit in the glass for a good 30 minutes before the review. On the nose: At first it was was woody and quite roasted, but as it started to open up, the typical notes from Foursquare rums appeared. Coconut, vanilla and caramel notes. Dried fruits and some chocolate notes. Some spices from the barrel. Balanced and with that intensity that you could expect from Velier releases. Taste: Woody and vanilla notes at first. Coconut notes. Milk chocolate notes. Light leather notes. Dried fruits. Good intensity and perfectly balanced. Finish: Warm with spices, woody notes and dark chocolate notes. Again, good level of intensity and balance all the way long finish. Flavour world is quite typical for Foursquare rums in this rum, but maybe the intensity level and balance level is just set a little bit better on this release. Haven't tasted all Velier Foursquare yet, but this sits pretty high on my list.

Obvykle. Tady to platí bezvýhradně. Dřevité dubové tóny se snoubí se sladkostí karamelu a svěžestí ovoce. A ten závěr… to je nádhera.

Sehr angenehm. Vollmundig am Gaumen. Hier dominieren die Würze und das Holz. Eine gewisse bittere Süße macht sich breit. Jetzt kommt etwas metallisches, grobes.

Review by Schnubbii

The tropically matured Foursquares are all of high quality, but don't necessarily fit my profile and are often a little boring. Only Plenipotenziario and Absolutio have really convinced me so far. Triptych also deviates somewhat from the typical Foursquare. Very fruity and lots of wood.
Review by Righrum
Another hit from Gargano-seale duo. This one is greatly driven by Madeira cask, indeed it is really balanced overall. Red fruits are the distinctive trait of this release, going from the nose to a clean and fruity ending

What a plank. I don't dare turn the sweetness control any further, because it's not sugary sweet, but there's a metallic sweetness on the edge of the tongue that comes across as rather tart. I'm still quite inexperienced, but it's really a lot of fun on the tongue and builds up a lot of body on the palate. Fantastic!
Review by Motekkk
A dense rum, the aromas are quickly released, very velvety, of great quality.

17/10/2025: tasting @ home with Stijn and Bram. This has to be one of the best Foursquares I've tasted so far. What makes this release unique is the 3 types of wood that were used for maturation. Overall a great, tasty, beautiful experience. Usually, I don't get surprised anymore by Foursquare, but this one did it.

Plenty of your trademark Foursquare aromas here. Caramel, vanilla, oak. Some bourbon. Pours dark amber in colour. I get peach skin and suntan lotion in the mouth, which gives way to a brief hot pepper punch. More oak in the mouth. Fortified wine isn't too strong for me. It has an almost syrupy mouth feel. Leaves plenty of bitter oak around on the long aftertaste. This is nice, but not among the top tier Foursquare for me. Sample thanks to Yaro.
Review by Henry Davies
The nose is much subtle than other Foursquare rums, however the rum is really well put together and up there with the best. Oak and milk chocolate, some caramel. The mouth is great balanced, oak and sweet bitty notes. Finish not as long as some but poised and real dark chocolate with wood and spice. Top notch

A very, very smooth foursquare. This is on the verge of being overly sweet. Its a nice foursquare with it's usual suspects in the palate. There is some simplicity where I do not know if I love it. Still it's not terrible
