Dràm Mòr South Pacific Single Cask Rum 2009

Most tasters land in the same place: a Fiji with the classic dirty, funky signature, but dialed back rather than in your face. Expect glue and acetone on the nose, foam-banana candy, pencil shavings and green tea, then a creamy, peppery, dry palate with papaya and ginger. A few wish the funk hit harder, and one found it a touch tired — but the majority call it tasty and balanced.

Dram Mor is quickly becoming one of my favourite independent whisky/rum bottlers. Not too expensive. No crazy finishes. Honest tasty stuff. So this is a South Pacific matured on Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. Fiji is the most Jamaican, Worthy Park, whisky in taste outside Jamaica itself. Nose. All the Worthy Park classics: funk, banana, flowers. Added to that green tea and pencil shavings. Not overly funky..balanced. Taste: more tropical. Honey sweetness. Very tasty. Less of the scale than WP. It earns it's own character. A style I dig.

No big surprise with the Fiji, the markers are there! On the nose we recognize very well the profile of this distillery: green tea - waxy and very vegetal for the blow. It is rather complex and intense with peppery, pineapple and a touch of varnish! In the mouth, it's warm, intense... wow... but creamy and tasty! It's earthy, woody and on exotic fruits. The finish is long and dry on peppery/vanilla. It lingers in the mouth for a long time, it's impressive! Everything is there in this rum, a beautiful nose, a nice attack in mouth and a long, very long spicy finish. My favorite of the evening. As for the Guyana, no hesitation I order a bottle right away! I'm going to follow this bottler, because 2 bottles tasted ...

Rather closed, needs tine to open up. Dirty & funky, less fruity compared to other Fijis.

Palate Light oliy, light wood, balanced, spicy, pineapple, fruity, light raisin, medium dry, herbs, light smoke, faint tar. Finish Medium to long, spicy, light wood, faint smoke, herbs, light medicinal, fruits. Extra note. Needs to rest for a good while to settle properly.

Let’s do another 2009 Fijian, this time from Dràm Mòr. C: White wine. N: Seawater celery. Is it pomelo or lime? Burnt eucalyptus in the background. Less phenolic and ester-y compared to other rums of the same 2009 vintage. It lacks virility and feels diluted. M: In-your-face and more phenolic, but a bit too sour for me. Spoiled lime and muted notes of burnt eucalyptus. The general vibe I get is as though the cask or distillate that went into the cask was tired, unmotivated. I don’t know why that feeling. F: Short and vegetal. B: No. I believe there are better 2009 Fijian out there.
